Hi frank not sure if you can help but my benq tk800 is driving me crazy. I keep sending my projector away to be fixed but a month after getting it back same problem. It overheats and turns off after about 20mins. I changed the lamp but same issue as with the original. And BTW the lamp body is insanely hot!!! Not sure if that's normal. Everything inside is super clean. Also I am not sure if it matters but I have no plastic membrane over the lamp, maybe when they previously repaired it, they forgot to replace it? Also I can I only see two fans when I open it. The one to the right of the body near the back blows inwards and the one next to the lamp blows outwards. Is that correct.. Help please and thank you very much for your great videos. Any advise appreciated. I'm in Spain BTW

Sounds like the exhaust fan is backward. The exhaust fan should blow out. The turbine fan blows into the lamp and then the exhaust fan blows that hot air out. If the exhaust fan is reversed, it will prevent the hot air from getting out and I would guess it would finally overheat in 20-30 min. It's also really easy to put that fan back in the wrong way. There is an arrow on it that should be pointing out. You can check the temps in the service menu. press menu then enter/source at the same time. use the arrow keys to navigate the boxes. One of the boxes shows the temp and fan speeds. just dont change anything. You can ruin it really easily with one wrong setting. I might be wrong but I kind of recall the Inlet fan being the only one that blows inward. I am fairly sure the rest blow out. imgur.com/a/nyIzDBU

You are very welcome! Hard to say on the fan source. I know encompassparts.com has a lot of OEM sony stuff. What I usually do it look up the part # on the fans sticker and buy them that way. I forget who sony uses for fans but they dont make them(sony). I'd check encompass first. Then I would google/ebay the part # listed on the sticker that is on the fan. That would be your best bet.

Hi Frank, I have the same projector, the bulb exploded a few seconds after I turned on the projector! Glass was found outside the bulb and the lamp housing was extremely hot, do you think there’s something wrong with the projector or if the bulb simply needs replacing? Thanks

Hey Frank, thanks so much for the vid very helpful. I have the 1075 and just replaced the bulb. She'd fire up for five minutes or so and then overheat and shut down. I checked the hidden menu and found that fan 3 was not working. So I went in looking for glass chunks (that got me last time) but didn't find anything. Did a general clean up and fired it up again, but this time I went straight to the hidden menu. Fan 3 was working fine, spinning at 3100 rpm or so if I remember correctly, so I thought I had (somehow) fixed the problem. No dice, after about five minutes fan 3 shut down again and the projector went into overheat. I have virtually no experience with projector repair but I am going to assume that there is no good reason for fan 3 to shut down in any circumstances (i.e. this behavior is not normal) so my naive conclusion is that the thermostat for fan 3 must be pooched. Would you agree with that guess? If so, would that be hard for a jobber to replace do you think? Thank you so much. Oh yah, and like probably most of us jobbers, I would never have thought to look at the fan blade alignment as a cause...

Hi Richard, Those fans will wear out even if they are spinning. Sometimes the RPM chip inside will give up the ghost even with the fan spinning. Those fans are pretty easy to change though. I like to use my scope to verify them as the service menu only shows the rpms. I like to see the actual pulses(personal preference, the service menu is fine). You may want to try running it with the top off, and measure the tach output voltage when it fails. I bet you see it go from less than 2v up to VCC(10-12v). That fan should be less than 20quid in my opinion. I see them in the states here for $10-15.

I suspect you are good to go. If you had an old bulb explode, it likely kicked some glass into the fan and jammed it. You cleaning it made the fan work again so as long as that keeps up, you should be in good shape. Enjoy the projector!

Hey Frank, one question for you because I see you're a pro. First vid of yours I see, and not a connaiseur, just so this makes more sense. I've had this Benq TH530 for 3,5 years now and ever since I started it, I wanted to replace that loud fan. So finally the lamp went out a week ago, and just last night I ordered a new one. In preparation for the lamp change, I decided to open it up for cleanup and inspection, and while at it, I checked out the fan. The first thing that got my attention was that it's a Delta Industries fan, which kinda intimidated me and got me thinking whether swapping the fan isn't in fact a bad idea. I'd love it to be quieter, but I doubt a Noctua fan (if they make 70mm fans at all) would pull the same amount of air through. Also, seeing that in the projector you opened here you also pulled a turbine fan, I realised those are much louder than the fan in question. So my question for you is what are your thoughts on the fan "upgrade" videos out there? I would assume it may be worth it for some projectors with lower end fans, but I have the feeling the only real upgrade for my fan would be replacing the fan with a new one, or maybe just oiling up the existing fan! I do wonder whether it came with a faulty bearing, seeing as yours also had a physical defect. Any thoughts?
@FixitFrank
@FixitFrank 3 жыл бұрын
Hah, thanks for the kind words. I don't know if I would say I am a pro but I will take it. I've seen a few upgrade videos but honestly I tend to side with the engineers who designed the projectors. The main problems are confirming and matching the CFM and the method of stall reporting. The stall reporting method varies from projector to projector. Some fans only report when they stall, others report the RPM in pulses. That needs to be matched or you will get fan failure warnings. Some RPM pulses are reported 2 pulses per rpm, versus one. Personally I always try and use the same fan that was in there. I went down the Noctua road with another person a few months ago and they don't offer a turbine fan anyway in that size so it's not really an option. My deduction on your fans is they likely wore out from heat. That blower fan gets a lot of dust through it and tends to have it pile up on the fan blades inside. That makes them run out of balance putting a lateral load on the bearing causing it to wear. Most of these use an oilbronze sleeve bearing. Some use a ball bearing but not many. The exhaust fan just gets pummeled with heat. I find that those lose the edge on the blade causing the airflow to drop off. In your case, I'd replace the fans with original fans or at least original spec fans. They are very available. I would also only change the turbine and exhaust fan. The rest live a pretty easy life. As long as they are quiet that is. If they are making buzzing noises, I would change all of them. Using replacement aftermarket fans would be a neat project to investigate. Matching the fan specs is a little time consuming but I will put it on my list for things to do as I do see a benefit, even for the fact that as fans stop being available we could find compatible replacements at the least or quiet replacements at the best.

Hi, Thank you very much for the video! My Benq W2000 suddenly started to get very hot. (it smelled burnt) so I switched off the beamer. I checked the fans, and I saw that 3 fans do not rotate even when the beamer is on. So I ordered 3 new fans. They arrived and I changed all of them. Now I have 2 questions: 1. I know is a kind of stupid question: But am I correct that the van should blow into the beamer? 2. The third "small" fan does not work, even with the new replacement. Do you have any recommendations for me? Best, Josef

Hi Josef, You're very welcome! The exhaust fan should blow out if I recall correctly. Here is the Level 2 SM for that model. It goes over the fan directions. drive.google.com/file/d/10iGLFpO2Xc1J0GfmBMA7Wl_9boiLXPQg/view?usp=sharing It's very likely the other fan only comes on when certain areas get hot enough. However there is a chance that the Fan_Thermal board has an issue. To check that involves the Level 3 SM. drive.google.com/file/d/1NQhBoO1IqMX_Zdnt27J-1B_L-BbONpnP/view?usp=sharing

Hi! Any suggestion on how to reduce noise of a BenQ W1070+? I like the projector but I really would wanna know if there is a way to make it more silent. I guess the fans are really high rpm so a switch to noctua fans maybe wouldn't do to much of a difference, right? If I attached a cpu-cooler over the lamp... would it then be possible to reduce the speed of the fans in any way?
@FixitFrank
@FixitFrank 3 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately those methods wont work in my experience. The Noctua fans use a different fan status reporting method (at least the Noctua fans I saw). Also the CPU cooler wont help cool the lamp much at all. They run so much hotter than a CPU. Average fan temp is +200c at its hottest touchable point. Even hotter inside where you can't get to. The heat is generated by the arc tube inside the reflector. The blower fan (turbine fan) blows air into the reflector to push the heat out to the exhaust fan. All that said, there might be a problem with your exhaust fan or color wheel(they can make noises like a bad fan). I run an HT1075(same as the 1070+ inside) in my bedroom and I sit about 5ft under it and do not hear the fans even in normal mode. You should really only hear the air moving in my experience. I mention the exhaust fan because it seems to be a popular failure for the fans. The problem with changing fans is you need to maintain the CFM (airflow amount) and use the same fan lock/fan status specs. Some fans report PWM with one pulse per RPM, others 2 pulses per RPM. Some pull the fan status lead high for fan stall or pull the lead low for fan stall. If you don't match those, it won't work at all. If you can match the size, the CFM and fan status type, then you can use other fans. I tend to use the originals because I figure the engineers spent the time and picked them for a reason. I would like to experiment sometime and see what could be done. I hear this a lot so its obviously something enough people run into. Maybe if I can get my hands on some other "quiet" fans and see if they will work... (really I need more free time. I'd love to give you a real solution). You may want to check your service menu and see if you have any old fan errors. Press menu, then press source and enter at the same time. It should bring up a little set of boxes. Then use arrow keys and enter/menu to navigate the screen to find the fan status page (option 3 or 4 I think).

@FixitFrank
@FixitFrank 2 жыл бұрын
These do not have PWM sent to the fans. They use RPM output as a square wave. The speed is determined by the dc voltage sent to the fan. The place to check depends on the fan but it seems to be on the grey wire or pin3 on each fan. You can check with a volt meter to find the pin. It will be the pin that is 3.3v or lower and not ground. I hope that makes sense. I have another video on checking projector fans kzbin.info/www/bejne/oXSyhIRumbuNrMU
@tijmeng8550
@tijmeng8550 2 жыл бұрын
@@FixitFrank I have a scope. But i meant, you have three wires, input and output of the fans. The RPM square output is probably in millivolts? Not in the range of 3.3 volts rights? So What you were measuring is probably the input square wave? I ask this beacause I had the Fan out of the projector and just check the output squarewave in combination wih 9 volt battery, but the square is not as nice as yours and in milivolts range.
@FixitFrank
@FixitFrank 2 жыл бұрын
These fans do not use PWM for power control. The speed is controlled by the DC input on the VCC wire. 12v being full speed and 6v (usually) being the lower they will spin. The other wire is "fan status". Some fans use a pwm like signal for reporting the RPM to the projector for fan stall reasons. Others will pull that wire high or low on fan stall. Only 4 wire fans use PWM for speed control. The reason the wire shows you such dirty PWM is that it needs to be held high via a 10K resistor. Here is a diagram of how to test and how it works. imgur.com/a/6uOIiDv You may also want to watch this. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oXSyhIRumbuNrMU

Hi, I few questions. Is the lamp cover in place? The cover depresses the switch that turns on the mains power. If not, check the thermal switch connection to the power supply. Also, be 100% sure you did not install the mainboard offset from the power supply pin-riser. It is easy to shift the connection one pin over. Most of the time it ends up being a wire you thought was plugged in and was not or something like that. I have had to put together and take apart only to repeat that 3-4 times on occasion.

So I bought and installed bulb #3. It is a stock Osram. The projector was NOT shutting down before I replaced the bulb. In fact, I was using the original bulb #1 for a month as I waited for the new one and it worked fine. So the new one seems to be getting hot and shutting down? Seems like if it was a fan issue it would have been shutting down with bulb #1... ? Thoughts?

the projector warmed up after cleaning in the service and it always turned off after 7 minutes the lamp cooled down and then the projector turned on and the red lamp lit. The lamp is lit 1450h. and the fans spun at 4500RPM. It wasn't clear to me, but when I drove the machine to a cleaning service, everything was fine. After weeks of reading the forum, I got angry and opened my projector and found a flaw in the front fan being turned, which was blowing inwards. I turned it so that the arrow of the fan pointed out and assembled the device. The projector is working, not humming and is well ventilated and the speed is 1900-2100 RPM. service might know this but don't you think? I'm a layman, but I don't hesitate to start everything, and if I knew I wouldn't go into that projector, I still had to. nice day Honza

I have an HT1075 with the exact same problem. The projector has been used sparingly, as in less than 250 hours. The exhaust fan has one warped blade, EXACTLY in the same pattern as the one in the video. How is it possible that one slightly warped blade can cause a 10 degree difference? And is it possible that the warped blade has always been there, but that the fan has just gotten old and isn't running at the same rpm? Also, when you tested the fans with the voltimeter it showed 6v when the fan's specs say it's a 12v fan. Isn't that an issue?
@FixitFrank
@FixitFrank 3 жыл бұрын
I'll be honest in that I am not sure why exactly those fans act that way. My suspicion is that they were not that bad at first but the heating and cooling causes the blade to warp and the leading edges to become more blunt. They use the airfoil design to move air rather than a pushing design with some angled blades. If the airfoil becomes inefficient, the air isn't going to move well at all. I also think Abba may have had a bad batch of fans. My personal HT1075 had the fan next to the DMD heatsink fail after 5 hours(brand new). I bought it on eBay but didn't know it was that new until I fixed it. The entire unit had about 15 hours including the factory testing (going by the service menu). The normal menu showed 5 hours on the lamp when the fan failed. The rated voltage is the max voltage the fan is happy with. There are chips for each fan that control the output voltage to change the speed as needed. It helps keep the noise down. 6v runs the fan at about 60% of its rated speed. It would go up closer to 12 when its in cooling mode. Thankfully that is normal.

@@FixitFrank cheers. Thanks for the response. Thankfully this model was quite popular back in 15/16’ so the spare parts are aplenty. I stripped down the unit and there’s nothing else that seems obvious apart from the fan in question, but I’m tempted to buy the whole 4 fan set because I don’t own a voltmeter and who knows which one is acting up.The lamp itself looks brand new with no heat damage.

@FixitFrank 3 жыл бұрын
If you can get the projector to power up for a few min, you can check the service menu(press menu, then enter/source at the same time) and you can check to see what fan it is. I'd definitely replace the exhaust fan. The other fan I see fail is the DMD fan (if yours has one, some of them didnt). The blower fan is probably fine unless you had a lamp burst at any point in the past. Aftermarket lamps are a range of quality. Most of the stuff on eBay is garbage. The large issue is that the lens used for the 5J.J7l05001 needs to have an ND coating to block UV/IR from ruining the optics and confusing the color wheel. In fact, I made a few vids on what to look for. If you know what to look for, you can save some money but don't believe any claims you read on websites about equivalent lamps and Osram or Philips. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pqrQaHdtmtmCma8& My day job is actually in the replacement lamp industry so it's something I deal with daily.

Hi Frank, I am from Sri Lanka, and own a Benq HT4050 projector. About 1 year ago this projector started giving me an uneven gray screen with a few white dots, after a while of showing good images on screen. The time the projector worked fine before the gray screen appearing became progressively shorter. Sent this to Benq in California, and have been using this for about 2 months, and the problem reappeared. Really frustrated that Benq makes projectors like this! What do I do to fix this?

Hi Sheran, That sounds like a failing DMD unfortunately. BenQ's service is definitely something that I find quite poor too. I see a decent amount of refurb projectors or warranty repairs that are poor quality. IF you can link a video of the issue, I can weight in more precisely.

Hey Frank, I know this will sound stupid but I have an EPSON EX5220 that hasn't been used in months and when I turned it on I noticed the intake fan had LOADS of dust build-up so the first thing that came to mind was to take the air compressor and blow the dust out because I didn't have any canned air... ANYWAYS, I may have gone a little overboard with it and ended up shattering the intake fan... I looked and looked online for a replacement fan but had no luck. seeing how you're a pro at this kind of stuff I figured you would know where I could buy one. Thanks.

I've done that. Those fans will overspeed and fly apart if you let them. It's kind of fun sometimes with scrap fans. Not so much when you need the fan... Type the part # on the sticker into Google/eBay. Im sure someone has them. Be sure you use the same part # because the fan stall/RPM lead is going to be one of the few different types and if you substitute the wrong fan type(even if voltage and size match) it may give you fan errors if the RPM/fan stall lead uses a different signal type than the projector expects. If eBay/Mouser/Google are no luck, after Chinese lunar new year, you can try Time Electronics. Gydz@timeprojectorlamp.com Be sure to send a picture of the old fan with the sticker showing.

Hi Frank hope your doing well I have a question. I purchased a Optoma Optoma HD131Xe. I took it apart an cleaned it and noticed it has no lamp thermal sensor attached to the lamp housing. I noticed it's similar to the HD20 model and where the lamp thermal sensor on the HD20 is the Optoma HD131Xe looks like it had a thermal sensor in the same place. I can barely see it outline like it was there at one time but I can't see anywhere where it would plug in on the main board. So do you know if Optoma didn't install a lamp thermal sensor on the lamp housing. I bought it used from the original owner and he said he never had any problems with the projector. Just think it's strange why the lamp housing on the Optoma HD131Xe has the image of where a sensor was but isn't now.

Id have to see inside, but they can be low voltage or high voltage. The trip mechanism is the same. I have seen them on the blower fan, the DMD housing and other places. @@FixitFrank yes but now it's dead. It had a flickering image. I thought it was the color wheel. Cleaned the color wheel an noticed the flickering happened after the projector warmed up. So I read a failing bulb could be the problem. Well I replaced the bulb and as soon as the power cord touched the power connector a spark shot out from behind the power connector and now the projector is dead. So I don't have a clue as to why it would of done that just by replacing the bulb. I have other projectors an replacing the bulb has never caused a short. I'm guessing the person I bought it from was not being honest about it. So now I'm at a loss of what could be going on. If I could send you pictures I would send one where it sparked from. There is no burn marks in the area the spark came from. The one thing you mentioned about a fuse in regards to my first comment I don't really know for a fact but when I researched it. I learned it senses the heat from the bulb to control the fan and increases the fan speed to maintain the temperature of the bulb. I'm guessing it's integrated on the circuit board somewhere as there is no extre external plugins on the board for one. Just thought it was strange how there is an outline on the metal casing surrounding the bulb.

@FixitFrank
@FixitFrank 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Peter! You're very welcome! The symptom says the color wheel is acting up, but why it's acting up is not as clear. If you replaced the lamp recently, the new lamp may not have a proper UV/IR coating. That can cause this issue really quickly. The glass on the housing should have an obvious reddish tint to it. If it does not or has a greenish tint, that is your issue. If the projector was running happily and then all of the sudden this began to occur, it could be something as simple as needing a cleaning or as complex as a new color wheel. They do wear out over time. A new color wheel should only be $30-40USD. It all depends on when the issue started. I hope that helps and thank you again for watching!
