The BenQ HT5550 has among the best out-of-box colors and HDR that I've ever seen from a 4K projector.

To be honest I wish they would ditch the on-board speakers on all projectors. It's pretty pointless considering if you spend a grand on a projector you most likely already have a dedicated speaker setup.

Scott, do you have a video showing your theater by chance? I like the setup and looks roughly about the size I plan on putting in my new home build. No windows, 20ft wide and 35ft long, but with bar taking up about 10-15ft of the length. I would like to see how your setup is, speakers, the columns, where you put all of your equipment. Review was excellent. I most likely will buy this model going forward. Thanks in advance. Eric.

Hi scott, love your reviews here on youtube and AVSfourms! I had a quick question, does the HT3550 and HT5550 share the same color wheel? if so, do you get comparable wide color gamut performance on the HT3550 without the filter engaged?
@ScottsTechandStuff
@ScottsTechandStuff 5 жыл бұрын
No they use different color wheels. They both have RGBRGB wheels but the HT5550 leverages similar pure coating processes such as the HT8060 to achieve its stellar color performance. The big thing that the HT5550 has going for it is that when you compare the HT5550 with it's filter off, it can outperform the HT3550 with the 3550's color wheel on. The key here is that the HT5550 doesn't take the lumen hit, while the HT3550 takes a 40% lumen hit. What that means is a brighter, more color accurate picture.

I have a benq w1400 at the moment and I would like to upgrade to 4k. Important for me is 3d and enough brithness since I have a light Grey screen for better black. This Beamer looks good in your test. I just don't like the size and that it's black, because it has to hang at the ceiling in my living room... It should be white. Also I told myself not to buy benq again. The w1400 had big software problems and they never solved them. Also you have to send in the Beamer for firmware upgrade and you have to pay for that. I couldn't find the best uhd Beamer for me yet... But this one will stay on my list.

@ScottsTechandStuff
@ScottsTechandStuff 10 ай бұрын
The biggest difference between the HT5550 and HT3550, IMO, are the Dynamic Iris implementation, HDR handling, and Color. The 5550 doesn't blow the HT3550 out of the water on any of those, but they are marginally better. They way I look at the HT5550 vs HT3550 is it is about 10-15% better performance/quality for about 30-40% increase in price. The price to value is still in favor of HT3550 but for HT snobs, the performance gains to price paid for those gains starts to really ramp up once you go above the $2,000-$2,500 mark.

I had the benq w2700 for testing and it was really loud for me(it’s 1m above my head but PQ was gorgeous and blacks were…good like 8/10). The most thing I am struggling with Xgimi is black lvl (I have no shadow details) and color-especially reds, it is 4K (pix shifting 4x) so I am worried if it will bother me with epson(pix shift 2x only).

@@keepitshema I think most projectors are going to be pretty similar noise-wise at 1m above your head. The tw9400 is a beast... its really big. I ended up keeping the Tw9400 as my main projector for those reason but the BenQs are still fantastic.

You call it a native 4k projector, then you describe an e-shift projector. Which one is it?
@ScottsTechandStuff
@ScottsTechandStuff 5 жыл бұрын
I know it is semantics but true and native aren't the same thing. I made to sure to call out it was shifting. True 4K is simply being able to uniquely reproduce 8.3M pixels on screen. This dead horse has been beaten enough so I won't belabor the argument... :) To be fair... "Native" means there are 8.3M pixels actually on the chip producing the image. If you'll notice, I actually never said that it was native. And e-shift is the brand name technology of how JVC does there 1080x2 shift (4.15M pixels). This is differently technology from TI called "XPR" which shifts the mirrors on the chip 240 times per second to get 8.3M on the screen. The results of a 4K image are impressive even compared to a 1080x2 shifter. Check out 19:56. With nose to the screen you can barely see the pixels. Very sharp.

@@ScottsTechandStuff I just received the HT3550 yesterday, looks amazing compared to Xiaomi Laser Projector that I tested. But whenever I turn on wide color gamut mode it gets too dim/dark even in Normal brightness mode. Not sure if it's a defect with Iris? I hear the click on/off.
@ScottsTechandStuff

@@bchi49 That sounds normal to me. It will do better calibrated color but at the cost of brightness. If I'm being perfectly honest I prefer the image with the WCG filter off on the HT3550. It does such a good job without it on and the image is much brighter. The nice thing about the HT5550 is that without its filter on, it still provides the same color as the HT3550 in WCG mode. So basically all the benefits of the bright color accurate image without darkening.

The UHZ65 is laser and has a 2x shifting mechanism instead of 4x like the HT5550. Calling this "True 4k," is misleading amigo. Faux K is a better description, or perhaps the illusion of 4k. I've owned several, including the JVC DLA-x500r with 4k e-shift, and it's laughable compare to the true 4k of even the budget (True 4k) Sony 295es.
@ScottsTechandStuff
@ScottsTechandStuff 5 жыл бұрын
Appreciate the feedback... I made to sure to call out it was shifting. True 4K is simply being able to uniquely reproduce 8.3M pixels on screen. This dead horse has been beaten enough so I won't belabor the argument... :) To be fair... the Sony is technically a "Native" 4K, meaning, there are 8.3M pixels actually on the chip producing the image. I've actually been very impressed with the 2Kx2 and 1080px4 shifters. Have you tried either of those? I think the 1080x2 shifters like some JVC and Epsons are laughable in resolution even compared to the 1080x4 shifters. The1080x4 shifters get you about 80-90% there in perceived resolution at about 30% of the cost. Thanks again for the feedback
@scrampker
@scrampker 5 жыл бұрын
@@ScottsTechandStuff personally I don't perceive the increased resolution on the shifting scammer stuff, because the pixels are gigantic. I get what they're trying to do, but ultimately I always totally disabled the feature after playing with it. I typically turn off all gimmicks, like active iris, motion blur, etc Given that the native 4k projector is only $5k, it doesn't make a lot of sense to buy anything with a lower spec for most applications. This is mostly because quality 4k TVs of 75 inch or so are so much more affordable that a projector doesn't make sense unless you're going waaaay bigger. In that case you'd want native 4k anyhow otherwise you'll be staring at a soupy mess.
@ScottsTechandStuff

Steven Scott I’m really trying to see this from your perspective but having trouble from a few angles... 1) Shifter scamming. Did you see the sample at 19:56? The lizard eye. That photo is taken mere inches from my 160” screen comparing a 1080x4 shifter with a 1080x2 shifter. A 1080p would look even worse than the 1080x2 Epson sample in that comparison. Do you see gigantic pixels in the HT5550 sample? 2) “only” $5k. I don’t mean this to be flippant. But... lol. 3) optimal seating distance for a 75” TV would be about 6 feet away. I don’t think a TV would work where my home theater seating has two rows of seating at 11’ and 17’ seating distance respectively. I will gladly take the large scale immersion of 160 inch screen which is precisely 355% larger than a 75” TV. The argument for projector is not equal picture compared to a quality TV... it is the value from a large scale display at a good value. If I were to create a personal 2-3 person screening room with ideal ratios for audio and video... sure. 70-80” OLED all day. Soooooo with all that said - I see your point that shifting 4K isn’t the same as Native 4K, let’s agree to disagree about the delta in performance to cost ratios on either :)
@scrampker
@scrampker 5 жыл бұрын
@@ScottsTechandStuff I guess I'm just used to everything in the home theater realm costing substantially more. I see your lizard eye and I agree that the shifted image has less-obvious pixels at the cost of sharpness...but better nonetheless. For whatever reason on my my JVC I never had the issue of seeing the pixels like I did on the cheaper brands like Optoma in the past. Hell for all I know it *always* did the shifting without telling me. Or the pixels just had less space between them, reducing the effect. I'm by no means a cine/audio/anything-phile, but 5k seems rather affordable for everything you get, like native contrast, real 4k, etc. Everything in this sector is rather expensive, and that's not going into how incredibly costly building a room around your massive screen will be. I suppose the way my mind works is that I am willing to use more of the available home theater budget on a better projector that's more future-proof than, for example, putting in nicer furniture or fancy doo-dads. At the end of the day I'll grant you that this PQ is leaps and bounds over the 1080p projectors of 5-10 years ago. Not sure how the other aspects line up though, like the x500r having 60,000:1 for starters. Just so many variables at play here but you exposing more people to this HT world is good for everyone. Thanks!

@@scrampker I checked Faux and native 4k on 2 projectors, side by side, in a show room. Both projecting same content. Unless I would pause and go closer to the screen I could not notice a difference.
