Thanks Ben. I had a Samsung fridge like this a few months ago where that metal drain probe was bent from the factory and touching the plastic inside of the drain hole so it was creating a strong plastic burning smell inside the fridge. Something to watch out for. I enjoy your channel and I've learned a lot of good things from it.

Ben. Thank you. You are my Appliance Hero. If I never hear that fan clicking again I will be praising you for years. 6 years ago the Sears repair man said there was nothing you can do. Just defrost it over night and it will be good to go. Since then every month I have been deforosting my fridge by taking everything out. Then someone said you should see if there is anything on KZbin which I was of course familiar with. Then there you are fixing my exact fridge. I got the kit for less than $70 and spent today putting in the new sensor and the new heater and everything in your kit. I am so excited to see it work but so far everything looks to be good to go. Burned my finger on the new heater when I did the test. Best feeling ever! THANK YOU. You rock

Ben is giving the public, for free, detailed information about how to keep its appliances running as long and cheaply as possible. A true advocate for consumers and contributing to e-waste reduction to boot. How much more value could you ask for than the knowledge and materials necessary to either 1) keep an expensive appliance working, or 2) know for sure that it needs to be replaced? More than happy to support this channel and business. Liked, subbed, shared, and bought his kit to refurbish my old fridge.

Bought this kit a few months ago but was too busy to install it. I finally retired from work and grew tired of hearing the fan rattle for the ice buildup so, I finally took the dive and did the repair. I watched the video again, several times but finally got the cover removed and all the parts install just as the video instructed. Everything appears to be working but I will know for sure in about two weeks as that was about how long the buildup would take after defrosting. I'll post the results then but, I am satisfied with the results so far. Thank you Ben.

Just installed the supplementary heater kit. I followed the directions with my own supplies for the moisture kit - I had previously cleared out and checked the drainage tubes. My evaporator cover was completely waterlogged so I had to replace it (ouch! but less expensive than a new fridge!) I had wanted to replace the main defrost heating element but accidentally ordered the wrong part and had to reinstall the old one. Replaced the defrost sensor and the defrost thermostat. I added better weatherstripping to my new evaporator cover per another video (tinkering with small humans). I am also going to check the leveling to see if that is an issue.

We've had the problem of water collecting under the bottom drawer but every time we open up the back, we do NOT have an ice ball at the top. The coils have ice and the drain is clogged with ice. Would this repair work for us? Or is this repair mainly if the fridge is creating the ice ball at the top?

Just finished installing this. I don't have an IR camera so I just have my fingers crossed. The only real difference was the top pipe that the supplementary heater goes on was a lot shorter in my model (which the video warns could be the case) so I had to figure out what to do with the extra slack of the heater wire. I opted to string it down a bit on the left side and loop it back up (taking care to leave some space in the loop so the cable wasn't touching itself). Hopefully that will be ok. Great video. Thanks.

One question Ben, if we splice the wire to feed another heater, that means current will also be devided...wondering if PCB allows for more current to be feed on said circuit, or if it will be overloading PCB heater/out circuitry, caused degradation of said crcuit, forcing it to be replaced in the future? Your smart though, but contact Samsung call center to talk about the issue I asked. If PCB circuitry can deal with it, well then, this was a hell of a fix dude!

Hey there, does anyone know if this model fridge has a damper motor? I've done everything in this video, my fridge will cool to set temperature but after that it won't cool. It just let's the temp rise. It seems like the fridge is capable of cooling, but when it reaches its desired temperature something is not telling it to begin cooling again. I saw posts about checking the damper motor, but I'm not sure my fridge has one.

Recommendation: the drain insert should not be tool steel, which has poor thermal conductivity. Heat is slow to flow from the heater and down the clip. Aluminum or copper is a better choice. Qualifications: BS Metallurgical Engineering, 35 years industrial experience.

The cause of this problem is simply the stupid duck bills they put on the top of the drain tube in the back. Just cut them open so the slit is now a larger hole. You don't need new 5 piece drain tubes. You don't need extra defrost heaters. You don't need a longer drain probe. You don't need that insulating tape on the drain pan. You DO need to add more cork tape back onto the tubing inside. start at the end of the cap tube and cover everything higher than that, including the loop to the left where you put your heater. The reason is that there is always refrigerant going through those tubes to send over to the ice maker since they do not have a "4 way valve" to be able to send refrigerant there separatley. All that other crap is because Samsung engineers refuse to accept the restriction on the drain tube is the issue and they are convinced it will keep room air from getting up to the evaporator(s). I do this repair all the time, and then guarantee it for life. I've NEVER had a call back. I do the same thing with every other brand in one way or another. I cut P-trap drain tubes, remove the duck bills, and on Frigidaire, I uncoil the drain tube, cut off the curved portion, swap ends, and reconnect it. I give lifetime warranties on all of them and never get a call back. On this Samsung, you can fix it without parts, saving the customer time and money. On any sensor, stick it into a known temperature medium such as a stirred cup of ice water that is known to be 32 degrees. That is the correct way to test it and the only way to be accurate enough to know if it's off by a degree or two vs 5 degrees of more. the fact that the resistance changes only tells you the resistor is functioning, not that it's accurate. Additionally, the sensor has to go right next to the cap tube connection. It's the furthest away from the defrost heaters, AND make sure it's inboard so it won't interfere with the evap cover seal on reinstall.

Question: I followed these steps and everything went well, however when I tested system on defrost mode (rd), the heater up top does not get hot. The main heater at the bottom got plenty hot, however the top did not seem to heat up at all. Based on how it is constructed it seems like this might be an issue with the brown wire harness on the left side of the fridge or faulty unit. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Ours had a leak at the back when I put it back together, the last time I repaired it. So there was a streak of ice coming from the cracked spot about 2/3rds down on the right side. My wife found a free fridge on fb marketplace. It's a side by side, and looked smaller in the pictures online. When I picked it up, it's as big as the french door one we have. They gave the fridge away, because they got a new one. This one they gave us is supposed to be working perfectly. The seals are now trashed on the Samsung fridge. I still have to swap them out. Somewhat if a big job, since I have to take doors off them to get them through the back door. LOL

I wanted to follow up on a post I did 5 days ago. Not criticizing this video at all, but this is what I found out and it can definitely save you money. I had this exact problem (fan noise likely from ice against the fan). I called Samsung Service directly. I was connected w a HUMAN tech, who I chatted w via text. He had me do a manual defrost, which is simply setting temp to 44 for the fridge and -4 for the freezer. He told me to keep that setting for 5-6 hours and then return settings to 37 and -2. I did that and, guess what? Noise was gone, so obviously ice was gone too. Never needed to open the patient up! Follow up: after 5 hours, the temperature didn’t drop to what it should have been. I called Samsung again, referred to the case number they had given me from my first call. Via text, the HUMAN tech walked me through a “power down cycle”, which is just unplugging the unit for two minutes and then setting the temperature again. They said it would take about four hours to achieve goal temperature. Woke up this morning, and temp is a perfect 37/-2.The power down process reprogrammed the compressor. Sometimes you gotta get inside the guts of your appliances, but always try the least intrusive option first. There are a lot of service operations out there that have SAMSUNG in their name. Here’s the number for the legit center that I called: 1 800 726-7864. I hope this is helpful, especially for those of us who aren’t comfortable performing repairs. Good luck!

Dude, I LOVE your work, plz do more videos on Samsung, however, no, you cannot test the resistence of the thermistor plugged in...current will flow towards rest of harness that goes to PCB, and you will not have a correct reading...never test components while they are plugged in...I think you just made a mistake, if you think about it 20 secs, you'll be like : "Oh yeah, of course its gotta be unplugged..."

This is not the first video of yours that I've watched, and I want to complement you on how well your content is put together. You're articulate, thorough and give some great perspective from your professional expertise! I like all my Samsung products, and most have been very good, but our RF267AERS has been problematic since a few months after we got it. I've nursed it through and had to have a board replaced (Only a few hundred$) and a water valve. The ice maker stopped pulling water to make ice, although the auger and ice/water dispenser work fine. I am sure it's a fluke, but it stopped after I changed the water filter. Have you seen anything like that happen? I made sure the lines weren't blocked, do you think the whole unit is caput?

Peace be upon you. I have had a problem with my refrigerator for about two months, and I had to replace the entire motherboard. I opened the refrigerator door and saw the refrigerator light was off, and this makes me worried because the first problem looked like this.

I expect the problem to be in the magnet placed at the top of the door, because the day I put another magnet on top of it, the light turns on, but it never stops until it turns off completely, after which I have to put the magnet in the same slot again.

I had a tech add the "official" Samsung fix for this problem, and it's worked for a couple of years with no more water on the floor, but now I see ice freezing on a spot in the inside of the back wall of the fridge, so I'm expecting more issues. Before I switch brands for the next one, has Samsung fixed this problem? If not, it's unbelievable that they have not done so after so many years. Another question: Do other fridges use the same method of defrosting? If so, what have they done to avoid this icing up problem?

youre putting the aluminum on the stainless evaporator cover which is the opposite of what we designed the kit to do. not saying it wont work as a break in heat transfer but it will accumulate cold. you added a heater wire because you didnt move the defrost wire to the outlet line. This is almost exactly what happened to our Samsung French Door last week. When we looked at fan, evaporator, cover, plus other parts possibly needed (plus a crack in the rear plastic). We'd already be at $400+ just for parts. Plus, the icemaker crashed and burned 3-4 years ago. Our new GE Profile side-by-side delivers tomorrow.

Excellent video and great kit! However, on my side-by-side freezer/fridge unit (RS261MDBP XAA) the defrost sensor is in a plastic clip on the copper evaporator tube, near where it enters what appears to be an expansion chamber. (In the video the sensor is on the other, much narrower side.) Can the secondary heater be attached so near to the sensor? Since distances are small on this model, the heater would have to be doubled back on itself.

I have a GE side-by-side refrigerator freezer. It’s about 35 years old. Has an LED “Electronic Monitor & Diagnostic System” control panel on the front of the freezer door. It was WAY ahead of it’s time. The ONLY service I’ve done is to replace the main control thermostat. The evaporator fan, the evaporator heater, the condenser fan, the compressor, all have never been touched❗️After buying an under counter ice machine, I disabled the one in the GE refrigerator. I guess it’s really hard for me to understand how GE was able to make such a trouble-free high tech unit that many years ago but company’s like Samsung, LG, etc. seem to have no clue how to make trouble free products today❓ By the way, your KZbin channel is excellent‼️

I had a freezing problem with my old Samsung that involved replacing the temperature sensor and applying metal duct tape behind the evaporator grills which solved the freezing issue 100% for the two years we lived in that house before selling it. I noticed that 4 years later the current residents resold the house and the fridge was still operating and included in the picture of the kitchen. I was careful not to allow the metal tape to touch any electrical connections. Seeing your fix I guess i could have used less metal duct tape but ...

Fridges that cost under $500 will be made with the cheapest, shoddiest, most failure-prone components. Inflation has driven prices up considerably and I cannot think of a well-made fridge much under $800 even with basic components. I am near certain your 40 year old refrigerator would have costed FAR more than $500 today.

To tell you just how big an issue this is with Samsung Fridges. On Amazon they have about 10k reviews of drain clips just for Samsung fridges. That means about 500k to 1 million units based on average review rates. Now maybe an item like this has higher review rates, but still over 100k units getting parts for repair just off Amazon alone. Honestly thats just plain negligence. You can find people talking about this issue online about a decade ago, Samsung never cared and just kept making Fridges with insufficiency sized parts to do their job. They either really like people having issues with their fridges, hoping they just go out and replace them with a new one, or they are grossly negligent. Maybe its a bit of both.

Took me about three hours and that was mostly just getting rid of the ice and completely defrosting all of the drains. Also the little red clips on the wires are a royal pain in the butt!! Thank you so much!! Turned it back on and in less than 4 hours the fridge was down to temperature!!!

Ben, need a little more help. With the help of my son, we installed the secondary heater, and a new back panel. We had good cooling for about 2 weeks, then ice rebuild up. I went and got a thermal heat reading gun, and we have determined the heating elements are not heating. My son checked the heater coil and it is still good. Seems we are getting power to the heating elements. We don't find a fuse on this system. Model RF260BEAESG/AA I'm wondering if someone removed the fuse in a previous fix or we are on to a different problem. TIA

Really good video with clear info on disassembly. Unfortunately I still get water pooling under the left drawer when there's no issue with the fan or drain (internal or external) and no icing anywhere behind the panel. It looks like water is dripping down the back left of the machine based on where it builds up. Internal of mine look exactly like yours. Anyone have any suggestions - gets boring chipping ice out every few weeks... :)

It seems like the water is not flowing through the filter at all. Even after removing the filter, same problem. What could be the issue? I ordered a new water filter assembly and hopefully that fixes it. Any ideas?
