Great video to show this is caused by the upper thread being stuck, your video will help many sewers do up the upper thread correctly. For the needle punched bobbin case if this appears the only damage it is usually possible to work over the damage with your fingernail until it is smooth and it will work again, though as you said it is best to replace it with a new one.

That's why it helps reading the manual.

Wow, this is a good one! I had that happen to me once and was able to figure out how the thread caught on one of those spools; my spool holder was too small (duh!) I also found a tiny nick on the bobbin case and was really p.o.'d at myself. I immediately ordered a new bobbin case but I also took an emery board and carefully smoothed out the nicked spot so I was able to use the machine until the new case arrived. That may have not been the smartest thing I've ever done, but it worked well in the interim. I'm really glad to know about the tiny spring assembly too, just in case it should happen again - NOT! I'll be checking my thread spools carefully and making sure to use the correct size holder from now on. Thank you SO much!

another fix for the cut in the spool rim is to turn the spool around so that the cut is at the other end and the dispensing end has no cut notch

The one thing you can't fix is operator error. I have worked in the electronics and electromechanical field for 50 years and I would say that a good 30 to 40% of breakdowns are do to operator error. A good part of my career has been in TV and radio broadcast engineering. I have seen quite a lot of operator damage. Great video, very informative thank you.

I thought stack wound thread is always supposed to be place on the vertical spool pin, while cross wound always goes on the horizontal pin. Stacked thread isn't designed to come off the end of the spool.

Can you turn those spools around so that the catch spot is on the other side? What a silly way to mess up a nice machine. Thank you for the video.

@@SewingMachineRepairGuy Also, both ends of the thread spool have those little nubs like a tiny scallop edge for the spool to look pretty, but they're not good for the thread.

Hey my machine has messed up from this exact thing. The thread caught and bent my needle. I detached the needle the auto threader works but will not read the thread. Check upper thread error. Any thoughts?

Basically "Prevention is better than Cure!!!". Many people do not realize that the needle can bend very easily when you tug or pull the string to cut after each sewing. Sometime when the string is a bit taut, you will pull harder and this action will bend the needle slightly and repeatedly, the needle will go out of alignment with the track causing jam and worst still a broken needle. So remember after each sewing action when you need to cut the string, pull it gently using both hands. One to above the needle and the other pulling the slack from the needle hole. Never use one hand to tug from the needle hole. If you don't understand what I mean, trying tugging the string towards you and you can see the needle actually bend slightly. Cheers!

It's a shame that these computer driven machines do not have a simple device to monitor the thread tension and stop the motor before things get destroyed. If the tread from the spool went through to spring supported pin which would move when the tension gets too high and trigger a switch, the computer could stop and show a message that top thread not coming off the spool as planned. And if the machine has good enough screen, it could show a picture that shows which way the holder should be attached so the user could debug the problem really fast.

How much more would it cost to make the bobbin case out of metal??? Probably $2, $3?? What a pity. I will stick with my Kenmores from the early 70s to mid 70s. ALL METAL, and built to last forever.

Excellent video. When the needle hits the bobbing and bends, Can this cause problem with the needle and hook timing? I’m new in your channel. Thank you.

Yes. Every time a denim seam caused a needle break, I'd almost always have to reset timing on a Singer HD

Snap spools are the way to go! On another note, what's your opinion on getting rid of rough spots in the spool cap? I tried am emery board but it's still not quite right.

That section of the spool should be on the right-hand side. Then it would not be such a problem to begin with.
