Basically the variable steering means more accuracy closer to the center so you've got more control over how much the wheels actually turn. But closer to full lock you have less accuracy so the wheels turn more with less steering input. Hopefully that helped some of you :)

Variable steering ratio: is a system that prevents people who don't drive well from messing things up at high speed by reducing the angle the wheel moves in respect to the steering input, because of course if you are driving in excess of 110mph you should be very gentle with the wheel unlike like when you are doing 50. however, if you are a good driver this is must certainly going to bug you because your steering inputs will always have a different result depending on your speed and sometimes even your slip angle because the car will decide for you and cars doesn't have eyes on the road. so if you know how to drive skip that option if possible.

The variable ratio steering allows for high speed stability due to smaller gaps between the teeth in the rack of the steering system in the middle of the rack. So that when the wheels are pointing forward away from the extremes of the lock of the wheels on the right or left, there’s more energy needed to be transferred to move it a great deal, causing it to have good high speed stability. However, the steering speed increases as the teeth distancing in the rack increases towards the lock of the wheels, causing you to have to exert less force for the wheel to turn. So as the wheels turn closer to their limits, they become far easier to turn, turn them back toward the centre, you’ll find it becomes more difficult to turn.

Variable ratio steering (at least, what I understand of it and wanted to share): On a normal car, the typical steering ratio is between 12:1 and 20:1. If we use 15:1 as an example, this means that for every 15 degrees that you turn the steering wheel, the front tyres will turn 1 degree in the same direction. This ratio is constant, and does not change from the centre position all the way to full lock, meaning that you have no additional increase to your steering angle at any point while you turn the steering wheel. On the other hand, variable ratio steering means that this ratio increases as you keep turning the steering wheel. For example (I have no idea what Bentley would be using), the steering ratio might start at 15:1 - 15 degrees on the steering wheel for 1 degree at the tyre - but might reach 30:1 by the time you reach full lock, effectively doubling how much the tyres can turn at maximum steering angle. This can be useful for 3 reasons: 1) It can improve your turning circle when performing narrow manoeuvres, as you'll be able to turn more tightly with less steering input 2) It can prevent oversteering at high speeds, as you will only need to provide gradual steering inputs to turn further. 3) For controlling powerslides or drifts, you wouldn't have to turn the steering wheel as far to get a greater steering angle, meaning that you should be able to catch slides quicker and easier. This could all be wrong, so please leave a comment to clear it up if it is! But if it's right, I'm hoping this helps people (and Matt!) understand the concept. I probably should've paused the review to type this so I'm gonna watch it back now 😅

Variable Gear Ratio Steering: The car is able to change the relationship between steering input angle and steering output angle. For example, in comfort mode, to keep the car from wandering all over the road, the ratio slows down and gives you more of a luxurious and smooth driving experience. You can wiggle the wheel around and the car would hardly respond. In sport mode, the ratio speeds up, giving quicker steering response more along the lines of a much more darty sports car. In this mode, if you wiggled the steering wheel, the car would twitch back and forth and would respond to each movement. In an extreme example, just to really illustrate what this does: in comfort mode, 1/4 turn of the steering wheel might translate into enough steering just to change lanes but in sport mode, 1/4 turn would be enough steering to actually make a full left or right-hand turn.

Variable - ratio steering is a system which uses different ratios on the ball, in a rack and pinion steering system. At the center of the rack, the spaces between the teeth are smaller and the spaces become larger as the pinion moves down the rack. In the centre of the rack you'll have a superior ratio and the ratio becomes inferior as you turn the steering wheel towards lock. This makes the steering less responsive when the steering wheel is close to its center position, other than it makes it harder for the driver to over steer at high speeds. As one turns the steering wheel towards lock, the wheels begin to respond more to your steering input. This ratio quickens near the extremes of steering lock so as to decrease the amount of steering effort necessary during low - speeds maneuvering such as parallel parking. The steering ratio, is the sum of degrees you turn the steering wheel, for the wheels to turn an amount of degrees. In motorcycles and bicycles, the steering ratio is always 1:1, since the steering wheel will always follow the wheel. The ratio x: y implies that you have turn the steering wheel x degree(s) in order for wheel(s) to turn y degree(s). In the majority passenger cars, the ratio is between 12:1 or 20:1 (For Example, If one complete turn of the steering wheel, 360 degrees, causes the wheels to turn 24 degrees, the ratio is then 360:24 = 15:1 (360/24=15)). A higher steering ratio means that more you have to turn the steering wheel so as to get the wheels turning though it will be easier to turn the steering wheel. A lower steering ratio is the vice - versa of higher steering ratio.

Explanation on variable ratio steering: On a normal car, when you turn the steering wheel, the wheels will turn proportionally to how much you have turned the steering wheel, doesn't matter the position of the steering wheel. on a variable ratio steering wheel, the more you turn the steering wheel, the more the wheels turn, so it's not proportional, when the steering wheel is centered it behaves just like a normal non-variable steering wheel, but as you turn the steering wheel the wheels are turned more and more with the same amount of "turn".
