He's not that precise, calm down. He did make some mistakes. For example he torqued the rod bolts instead of stretch them. Rod bearing will go if he pushes alot of power through it. Going to make an ASMR EJ build myself here soon. Aisin timing kit should have been used. That's another weak point. Also he forgot to put the water pump hard lines behind the tensioner. Those will be a bitch to install later.

Sincere question from someone who has never done anything like this: Would this actually be doable in a day, if you knew what you were doing? I have watched quite a few engine build videos but it's sometimes hard to judge, especially because you don't know how much has been cut and if every step was included in the video. Just curious how long this would take on average, for someone with at least some experience In any case, looks like a lot of fun, I can imagine it being therapeutic indeed

I finished my build not that long ago. I regret spending the extra bucks on forged internals and a billet block. After realizing that no matter what you do, the EJ engine cannot be made reliable, I concluded that this is a labor of love. Oh and a money pit that the wife does not at all enjoy 😂
@punishthemeatpocket4 ай бұрын
Why what is the weak point of the EJ?
@piratelechuck19114 ай бұрын
@@punishthemeatpocket The entire bottom end, unfortunately. Forged pistons still suffer ringland failure and the extra clearance on cold start will oval out the cylinder bores within 100k miles, if it lasts that long. I won't knock a full build for power, this setup can handle waaaay more than stock, but even if you decided to baby it, a stock motor would still last longer. To be fully transparent, I did every reliability mod you could possibly throw at it and I'm on my third motor. T4 cooling mods, better injectors, full IAG catch can, proper intercooler, oil cooler, and every temp and pressure failsafe you can imagine. If I didn't love these cars so much, I'd have walked away years ago.
@punishthemeatpocket4 ай бұрын
@@piratelechuck1911 Thanks for the detailed response. Is it because the cylinders sit horizontally that causes oil starvation on the top?
@piratelechuck19114 ай бұрын
@@punishthemeatpocket Oil starvation is actually less of an issue than most think with these. It's not an amazing system, but it's adequate for daily driving and with a proper catch can system and an upgraded oil pump it's non existent. A properly baffled oil pan will prevent starvation issue when hard driving, which is when the problems really role in. I should clarify at this point, when I say that an EJ cannot be made reliable, it's a statement that morphs based on your goals. I've never seen a motor with more than 250k that wasn't rebuilt during its lifetime. That all being said, if one were to go grab an 08-14, or more preferably 11-14 WRX, and had a stock engine properly rebuilt with attention paid to piston grade and size, properly gapped rings, and finally the valve job, you'd have a really solid base. Then if tuned for knock reduction and ran on clean fuel, I would dare say that it meets the requirements for "reliability" for most drivers who just want a spirited daily driver. You can expect 100k from a built motor that is being dogged out from time to time. But you can get 250k, potentially more, if the stock motor has been properly tampered with. Unfortunately all things Subaru should have and could have fixed.
@punishthemeatpocket4 ай бұрын

@Pallidus_Rider6 ай бұрын
Devin, would be cool if you made a whole series of videos like this for each and every 4-banger 👍
@TheLumberJacked4 ай бұрын
Only thing that caused me concern was seeing the wrist retention C-clip get installed with the opening towards the piston. Now, maybe I’m wrong but isn’t best practice to put the gap in the C-clip at the 3 O’clock or 9 O’clock position? In a situation where the open portion of the C-clip is facing the piston, the g-forces generated by the reciprocating piston can cause the open portion of the “C” to squeeze together which could let the clip pop out. Obviously highly rare, but it is possible, if not at least plausible that it could happen in some circumstances. Diesel engines for instance this is something you always do. C-clip opening is always 90deg off from its direction of travel. Anyhow, that nit-pick aside, genuinely loved the video man. Beautiful work and awesome channel.

I ask this because I noticed through the entire engine assembly that you are making it a point not to touch the torque wrench head. At times, you would be supporting the wrench, and just before it reached final torque, you would remove your hand completely.
