Yes, he would have had a young kid, 12 or so, a "cabin boy" to take care of his quarters and clothes, etc. That fringe looks great! So many helpful tips for working w/fabric in mini. I'm kinda scared of prints bc they seem so difficult to choose for scale!
@BentleyHouseMinis5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the cabin boy info... that makes sense! I have found the best thing for finding mini fabrics is to make friends with an avid quilter lol! They go through a lot of fabric and have scraps big enough for mini use when they are done. As you work in 1:12 scale you will start to be able to look at something and tell if it will work or not😉

How beautiful! Any ship's captain would enjoy a good night's sleep in that bed. The mattress would have been made of feathers or wool, so lumpy is accurate. There would have been a "cabin boy" (aged 8 to 16) who would cater to the needs of the captain and any important guests aboard ship. The cabin boy would also have been a general helper aboard ship. I love this video!!
@BentleyHouseMinis5 жыл бұрын
Thank you Rachael! I figured the mattress would be a bit lumpy but I made it before looking it up the historical reasoning. I am glad that you're backing up my decision ;) And I am wondering why I have never heard of a cabin boy?! I will need to do more research!
@rachaelkasper54455 жыл бұрын
@@BentleyHouseMinis Glad I could help! Here's some more... www.thepirateking.com/historical/ship_roles.htm This website refers to pirates specifically (which were often employed by governments to make shipping difficult for "enemy" governments), but much of this would have applied generally to ship crews in the 1700s. During battle (whether pirate or legitimate trade or military ships) the cabin boy also served as the "powder monkey", bringing gunpowder from the supply to the gunners who were manning the cannons. (There's nothing like the smell of black powder in the morning! And...on everything you own after a weekend of reenacting LOL)

Another fab tutorial. Perhaps you could have a robe or cloak of somesort thrown over the bed, the Captain would be out in all weathers so would have outside clothing - that would also add do a rumpled look. As would - and I look forward to seeing you make them, a couple of pairs of knee high boots. Maybe the captain would also have a wooden tray with a lip on it so he could write in bed - I think some of the ships tables had them in any case to hold the items on the table. The drapes are superb - they really lift the whole idea and give it the luxurious feel you were after :-)

Beds during the time you mention were shorter than today's beds and I think called rope beds. People were shorter and the beds were lower to the ground. The frame would have pegs on them to to wrap the rope around to make a coarse net. The mattress was a cheap material like muslin and either stuffed with goose feathers, eider down, or beaten rushes or corn husks that have been separated and dried. They would be laid on the rope frame and all the sheeting were flat sheets made of cotton or linen(no fitted sheets). The cabin boy would maintain the captains quarters. He would have to tighten the ropes on the bed on a regular basis because the ropes would stretch over time. The cabin boy would also have to climb into the bedding to warm the bed for the captain and sometimes slept at the captains feet to keep them warm as well.
@BentleyHouseMinis5 жыл бұрын

Ara, once again another great video. I thought you were going to age the blanket. Where did you get the gold fabric?
@BentleyHouseMinis5 жыл бұрын
I probably will add a bit of aging once it is permanently in place and has any thing I want sitting on top of it. You know I can't help but age things lol! I think the gold fabric is a remnant of some upholstery fabric I got at an estate sale ;) Thank you!

Gosh I love your projects! The colors & patterns on your captains bed are so perfrct! I was wondering, what kind of glue are you using on the pillows? I'm assuming it's a heat set glue as I see you using a little heating implement?
@BentleyHouseMinis5 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! I am just using Tacky glue... it is not a heat set glue but the iron helps it dry almost immediately.

I didn't see your po box address.. I 100% want to send a book. I love the bed for the captain.. Maybe a photo of his wife or lover on the wall by his bed? And maybe a handkerchief or flower that she'd given him as a farewell gift? Even the captain needs a reminder of what he will be returning to one day ☺

Great suggestions! I definitely want to do a lot with the art around the cabin ;) You can find my PO Box in the 'about me' tab on my channel or in the linked video that tells you all about the books. I am looking forward to it!💖

I wouldn't know about C17th because I am not quite that old, but I do know about C20th ships and a cabin steward would have done his bed.

Thank you so much! I listened to Google Translate say it over and over again before I attempted it lol! And we know what a great reputation google translate has. Hopefully I got a little bit close ;)

What kind of glue is she using on the fabric
@BentleyHouseMinis4 жыл бұрын
I am using hot glue here... I don't always use that though... just depends on the situation.
