Awesome thanks for sharing. Love the pocket holes and wasn’t sure if they’d hold for something like this. Now I know. Thanks again!

I am building one right now and the lumber using Birch Ply and dimensional pine I was at $600 and no hardware yet. But, it is a great project I am doing with my daughter for whom the bed is for.
@scottslotterbeck37963 жыл бұрын
Baltic birch is the best for drawers. Otherwise, regular sanded plywood works great. Lumber prices have doubled since January 20, 2021. Ridiculous.

Im gonna take some inspiration, i have a trailer with weird walls that im renovating to live in and im looking for a captains bed thats tall but not too tall where i can have 2 sets of drawers, or drawers and an extra pull out bed, and possibly a pull out slab to use as a nightstand or something. My main thing is i want it twin size, and need it to fit into a hole where the bottom half of the wall comes in at a drastic angle, and still want to have drawers and possibly a second bed. I do like the look of this though, so my main inspiration will be taking the aesthetic lol
@anthonyjames64725 жыл бұрын
Katie, this is a great bed. I started building it this weekend with my daughter. But, I had a couple questions. On the desk/nighstand did you use 1x3 on the outside or 1x2? I am using dimensional lumber and yours looks more like 1x3? Just looks like a large frame around the flats. Thanks..
@addicted2diy5 жыл бұрын
Anthony James for the frames of those two components, I ripped the wood down to be 2”. I would definitely love to see photos of the finished bed and please let me know if you have any additional questions!

I'm looking to build a twin-sized captain's bed. Sunset magazine has plans in one pf their Storage books, but looking for other ideas. Good ideas here. Not a fan of pocket screws in general, but in this application, a good idea for strength.
@addicted2diy3 жыл бұрын
With assembling this in the house, it is definitely necessary to use pocket joinery. That being said, it’s been almost 4 years and it’s still sturdy as ever.
@scottslotterbeck37963 жыл бұрын
@@addicted2diy Yes, they work well. BUT...fine furniture does not use pocket screws! I use dowels generally myself. The best is mortise and tenon, but you need a mortising machine or a router jig. Anyway, you did a very good job, and I like the design. With small houses, we need all the storage space we can get!

Guesstimate it. My question also. Sunset books has a nice Captain's bed with plans. Look in used books for storage books. Look at child sitting, and look up child's chair. Actually, I think you could make it any size you want.

@FringeWizard24 жыл бұрын
You just need a drill, sandpaper (or use a sanding brush on drill), a circ saw, and measuring tape. For Tongue & Groove Joints you can use a dado blade with circ saw to do that. Everything else that I saw used in this video is optional and just makes the job quicker and easier except maybe whatever she's using to make those cuts in the edges of boards to fit in tools I don't even know what that is. There's really only two expensive tools you have to buy and that's the drill and circ saw.
@scottslotterbeck37963 жыл бұрын
@@FringeWizard2 there are no dado blades for circular saws. Just find a pocket hole jig. They are not that expensive. I would not recommend nails on this project!!! Need: circular saw, tape measure, a bunch of pipe clamps, glue, drill with screwdriver bits and drill bit set. Get good quality corder drill if money is a factor. Stay away from cheap Chinese stuff. Black and Decker, Craftsman, Skil, Kobalt, others are OK. Lots of clamps. I use Bessey clamps most often.

How much is the overall cost of equipment and materials? I am getting interested in building my son a similar bed, but have no experience, equipment or knowledge yet...
@addicted2diy3 жыл бұрын
I really wouldn’t be able to give you an estimate at this point. Lumber prices have changed drastically over the past year and I feel like they’re almost changing daily in one direction or the other.
@scottslotterbeck37963 жыл бұрын
You can make great furniture using very basic equipment. This is not the easiest piece to start on. Buy a handheld pocket screw jig. You'll need a drill, bits, and screwdriver bits. Clamps are a must. Pipe clamps are cheap and work great. You can hand cut most things using a circular saw. She's right, lumber prices are crazy as inflation heats up to the highest in 40 years, so shop carefully. As for the drawer glides, shop around. They can get expensive. Above all, be safe building and make is strong enough for a person to lay on. TBH, I would start on a simpler piece like a basic cabinet, storage shelves, or bookcase before tackling this.

Ah yes how to build a bedframe using thousands of dollars worth of tools. Ah well it's still inspiring and giving me ideas, although I got less tools and only palettes and scrap wood to work with.
@stephenwgreen784 жыл бұрын
You could build this with a hand saw, measuring tape, manual drill, screwdriver, and a box of screws (could even skip screws and drill if you got a cheap chisel set & used joinery/glue). People made very beautiful furniture before power tools/pocket holes...just start planning and build something. If you like it you'll pick up tools that make it easier/faster as you go. (I bet you'll like it) I would suggest starting with how to make a box as everything people usually make are just combinations/variations of this one concept (drawers/frame/headboard...) This style bed would look great with pallet wood too by the way😁👍 best of luck.
