We use a 36 lb trolling motor on our small 15 ft sailboat. We get about 3 - 4 mph as well. On larger lakes we use a 5 hp 4-stroke outboard which moves us a lot faster.

I have an unusual 1232 jon boat. Its SUPER lightweight. Maybe 80 pounds and only rated for 4 hp. I use a 55lb thrust trolling motor and I get a days worth with it on the lake. Its great for the river too. Enough to float down a couple miles and take me back against current. The ease of use and zero maintenance really keeps me from getting gas.

Depending on the resistance of a given boat through the water, you might be able to get more speed with a different type of prop. A trolling motor is designed for trolling with typically larger boats and the prop pitch combined with the rpm doesn't give it enough forward displacement to go very fast even without boat drag in the equation. The maximum potential speed is probably in the 4-5 mph range. You could say it's geared for torque, not speed. People have had success getting above 5mph with standard 12 volt trolling motors and more slippery craft like canoes and kayaks by switching to model airplane propellers in the 9-6 to 10-4 range. The first number is the diameter and the second number is the pitch. APC brand props are ideal because they are more rigid. Drilling out the hole to proper size and adding a slot for the drive pin is required.
@Andy-df5fj
@Andy-df5fj 4 жыл бұрын
Also, if you do this, forget about trying to go through any weeds because the model airplane props are terrible for that.
@Andy-df5fj
@Andy-df5fj 4 жыл бұрын
@David Marks It depends on how brave you are. Many people are even venturous enough to go out into the ocean with just a paddle. Personally, I would want as much power as possible which would mean either a petrol engine or a very exotic (and expensive) electric propulsion system.
@stefanmustermann8218
@stefanmustermann8218 4 жыл бұрын
Another way to increase speed, is to increase the RPM of the prop. For this you have to overvolt the Motor. I use my trolling with 48v. But i have limited the current on 18A. So the motor will Not be overloaded. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rIWqmHxmn7eqhM0 In the descibtion are the details. But it is in german.

@@Andy-df5fj hello, details are in the discription below. I translated it just for a minute. In the Video i drive with 360W at 6.3km/h. At full throttle it goes up to 7,5km/h at round about 1kw. But the boat is not designed for this power. The structure of the boat get lost. Some people increase pressure and use a Solid ground to optimize the boat. But this can destroy the boat. Soon i will try my motor on an canoe. I hope to reach 10km/h on an acceptable Power consumption.

I first had the weight in the back and it was terrible and now that its forward it is much better. Also how long of a shaft is your motor and how much is in the water? You do not want to bury the motor in the water or you will get a lot of drag,

Figure all trolling motors will average around 3 mph, or slightly higher, no matter what thrust level you use, or prop you use. If you want higher speeds, then lessen the weight in the boat, because the heavier it is, the less speed the boat will do, because it will sit lower in the water, thus add more resistance. Best thing I can say, is enjoy what you have available, because your not going to break any speed records, less you switch to gas powered engines.

My endura max 55 and my 36lb thrust are the same speed. Seems like the same torque. Only difference is the draw on the battery. That 55 really sucked down the battery. I used it for a year and dealt w it hoping I would learn to like it. But I didn’t. I even got stuck trying to battle against really heavy winds w the 55 and I though it would be more torquey and get me home. It did not. I ended up on the shore riding the storm out. Go with the 30 36 or even the 40 if it makes you feel alittle better. Those are much better on your battery.

If you’re by yourself you need to split the weight evenly front and back making the boat level or plained out. Pitch of prop same as transom of boat.

That's kind of disappointing. My 30lb goes the same speed like that in a calm day. I just got a 55lb hoping it'll go a little faster, haven't tested it but now I don't feel much hope after seeing this. I do have a smaller boat 8ft though.
@BentRodBassin

The lb rating is for thrust not top speed, they all go the same speed, but the 55lb keeps the speed in the wind. 👍

@@BentRodBassin Not sure about that. They may spin at the same RPM but I can tell you I went from a 55lb to a 70lb on my boat and its a very noticeable difference in top speed and acceleration even though I added 134 lbs worth of batteries to feed it. I'm not saying you are wrong, I'm just saying what I have personally witnessed on my own boat. And for the original poster, you can get a different prop to give you better speed.

Looking into building a micro-skiff for inshore and lake fishing but I really wish I could skip a smelly and loud 2 stroke motor but if its going to be this slow then I am not sure anymore... Found some electric outboard motors that where suppose to be 2,5 horses and up but they started at 3000 dollars 😭 don't understand how electric motors can still be so expensive when they are way less complicated to build and fewer parts then combustion engines

Trying to decide if the 40 lb or even 50lb would be worth the extra $$ on a 14 foot square stern canoe. Above 30 lbs, they have 6inch longer shafts, that might play a role as well.
