One of the most common questions I get asked is what is the difference between an electric outboard and trolling motor. In this video I SHOW YOU. I do a head to head testing and detailed comparison of the ePropulsion Spirit 1.0 Plus VS the Minn Kota Traxxis.
I will break down the specs and cost of each motor. Give you an introduction to both systems. Then we will take the Spirit 1.0 Plus and the Traxxis for a test spin in the same boat, a Tracker Topper 1036. I'll show you the top speeds of each competitor as well as show you calculated run times. I'll do my best to explain battery life, calculations, and pros and cons. I weigh both set ups on camera, as well as show you the portability of each. I will do a detailed comparison of both units showing their advantages, features, and construction. Lastly, I will give you my personal conclusion!
Any questions, please leave in the comments 👊👊👊

The Spirit is nice but, you should have used two Dakota Lithium 54ah batteries for the Minnkota to be a fair comparison. That would make the cost equal and the weight difference minimal and the run time on the Minnkota would be way more than the Spirit outboard. Top speed would of course be the same.

I'm not spending 1,000$ on 12v batteries for a trolling motor. I think that's the point. I was showing the common setup that everyday guys use, then a setup twice the price which is plug and play. If you watched the video, you will show I covered the lithium option in it. If you see value in that option then that is your choice. The traxxis setup would still be heavier by 20pds w the lithium and no doubt in my mind that the Spirit would still be faster. No way the Traxxis is making up 33% of its top speed just by switching to lithium. But yes, I'd love to have ran both off the exact same battery, im confident the Spirit would still outperform the Traxxis.

@@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats You did it right, imo. What's happening is folks hoping that their trolling motor would compete with a modern e-prop are a bit ruffled feathers that it frankly can't. It's just technological improvement, folks. Trolling motors are based on a LOT of old technology. Simple as that. What's coming next? E-Props that start borrowing trolling motor features, like gps, spot lock, navigating, waypoints, transducers, alll that. Because right now the best option is still BOTH. The e-prop(of any brand) is by far a better outboard, but it does none of the Keeping You On The Fish stuff that a nice trolling motor can. The trolling motor cannot give you the power(until they make a 200lb thrust trolling motor) and long lasting runtime of the e-prop and the e-prop gives you none of the fish catching perks that the trolling motor does.

A 12 volt 100 ah lithium ion battery today is around $400 and it will have multiple uses when not in the boat. With a inverter it can be used to power devices around the house incase of a power outage or run a 12v coolbox on the boat. You would only need one 12v lithium ion battery to power the trolling motor as with a lithium ion battery you will be able to use 90% of the power in the battery, whereas with the lead acid battery you will only be able to to use 50 % of the power in the battery before it gets damaged. A 70 lb watersnake with a brushless motor is around $500 add a $400 lithium ion battery and you are good to go for less than half the price of the ePropulsion motor.

Nice comparison! I recently traded/sold a Honda 5HP 4 stroke for a MotorGuide 82lb trolling motor, with 2 X 12V deep cycle batteries. (I got a lot of cash as well.) I will be using it to drive a small sailboat on a protected lake. I have been interested in how fast, how long, etc., and I think your setup is very similar. Not having to deal with gas, a gas tank, cranky carbs, (at altitude) tune ups, oil changes, winterizing, and so forth won me over. If I had a bigger budget, the ePropulsion looks to be the new leader in small OB's. Well done!

Two years later this motor is going strong kzbin.infoUgkxBZWgzfpS2Jj7JqIHyaSZjyVHNUgCKCBf Just uploaded a video of it after 2 years. We use it probably a dozen days each year on our small raft.-original review- We got this motor the other day and tested it out. I don't have anything to compare it to, but it seems good to me. It has all the features advertised - the motor housing is metal. We will see how it performs longer term and I will revise this review if needed. Some initial observations:- Good thrust, moves our boat around really well- It comes with a circuit breaker but no switch - so there's no way to kill the motor other than yanking the connection off the battery. I installed an inline switch.- The mount bracket is plastic and I worry it might break- There are a number of plastic parts that I worry about, but the most important ones are metal or some kind of composite

Actually, you can get two 100-AH lithium batteries for quite a bit less than the units you showed in your video. The SOK drop-in replacement is one option, as is a very simple build using pre-configured Lynx battery modules. This would make the two options quite similar in price and performance, but with one significant advantage for the traditional trolling motor, and that is the ability to use the same batteries for a variety of other activities, like camping, ice-fishing and emergency home backup power. Since a lot of us leave the motor attached to the boat and the batteries in the boat, full-time, this reduces that one advantage, but it brings up a question I have about the ePropulsion option. With my boats, I have on-board charging systems so that when I get home I just plug in a single cable and I'm ready to go the next time I want to hit the water. What are the options for charging the ePropulsion battery without removing it from the motor?

It shortens the gap, but there would still be a HUGE difference in performance as the Spirit is 60% faster - that is A LOT. It also doesn't work in return on investment, as the traxxis is going to keep getting weaker with its cheap, brushed motor, and the spirit is not. The only advantage the trolling motor could have is if it was an iPilot equipped model, such that it gives you features the Spirit does not(gps. spot lock, navigation features and waypoints), but MinnKota puts the iPilots at a large mark-up from a Traxxis, so it fails to show any advantage there, either. Frankly, as an outboard....they just don't compete directly. It's either an e-Prop(of any brand) or Something Cheaper But Worse with a trolling motor(of any brand).

Just salvaged a 104ah “24v” lithium electric boat battery, replaced proprietary bms, etc and now just waiting for the rain to stop for first test with my 86lb trolling motor. This battery tops out at 29.05v so it should run the trolling motor slightly higher rpm vs my 2 SLAs (160lbs total btw). Think I got around 3hr run time on SLAs with significant drop off on speed. This is on a 5 person inflatable dingy with aluminum floorboard. Still well under $1k for battery, electronics AND motor… :-).

There is a charging port on the standard floating battery. If you run a canopy, you can have the solar plugged into the battery while fishing or taking a break for lunch. It can extend your time on the water. Also it is possible to purchase an extra of the floating batteries and bring it onboard. After you have run through the first battery, you can connect the solar charger to it, while you are using the second one.

We run a 86lb 24v bison trolling motor - £150, shortened the shaft (they are far too long as standard) , upgraded the prop (£15) and use a 6s 20,000mah battery. (£100) We get 6 knts (6.9mph) on a 2.7m airdeck dinghy and I've had it 3 years, used all the time in saltwater. It has never been in freshwater. Never even washed. If the brushes fail, its £1 and 10 minutes to change them. I haven't had to do this yet. Total weight of our setup - 15kg including the battery. So at 1/6 the cost, its faster, and puts out 1100w *measured*. If I want increased range, just buy another £100 battery. Not an Epropulsion 48v battery that is VERY expensive. Furthermore, if it does go wrong, it can be fixed easily. If the eprop' goes wrong, its back to a dealer. I appreciate the video but its not really fair to compare 2 things you have. I would be intrigued to see the actual thrust output at standstill between the two, as that's what a trolling motor is designed for.

Well, the proof is in the pudding is a new twist on a very old proverb. The original version is the proof of the pudding is in the eating. And what it meant was that you had to try out food in order to know whether it was good. So, over the years, the original proverb has evolved. The original was the proof of the pudding is in the eating. It was shortened to the proof of the pudding, and then here in America, it morphed again to the proof is in the pudding.

I've been at this sort of thing for a while and also also deal with this kind of tech for work. Electric trolling motors are not direct replacements for gas powered outboard engines and not comparable to electric outboards. Here's the math that will settle this. A gas powered outboard gives you 40lb of thrust per HP. So even an old 5HP two-stroke outboard will give you at least 200 lb of thrust (worst case). To get 200lb of thrust, you're way outside a trolling motor and in the realm of expensive electric outboards with 36/48V lithium battery banks. Back to the trolling motor...If you want to get around slow, quiet, and smooth, on a Fairweather day, an electric trolling motor will do the job. But pair it up with a 50-100ah lithium to be fair; lead acid to drive a trolling motor is bad application. In a calm marina, 40-70lb thrust trolling motors are good enough for light to heavy loads. I use a Minn kota 50 lb thrust riptide on a 7ft inflatable dinghy mostly in the marina and it gets around 4-5 people well enough. Out in open water, with heavy load of humans, it will make it, but definitely sketchy. Finally, my 6 HP two-stroke Johnson outboard makes my 7ft dinghy a rocket in the water, will literally lift the nose out of the water and nearly sink the motor if I don't spread out bodies. To get the same effect with an electric motor, I'd need 200-250lb of thrust on a brushed motor running off of 48V battery bank, capable of putting out a 1000-watts for sustained periods. Anyway, as you can see, it's apples and oranges.

I might be wrong but I'm sure if you add a PWM(Pulse Width Modulator) to the trolling motor the battery will last longer, the default speed controller doesn't limit the power it dumps the excess and you still use the same amount of battery as the fastest speed on the lowest setting, I'm not just talking I did get myself one and it seems to work but idk much when it comes to the calculations but there are a few videos if you search for them if that helps you or anyone else who doesn't want to break the bank.

You covered every important piece of data to make this comparison very meaningful. You clearly demonstrated the undeniable run time advantage of the ePropulsion motor, but it is actually better than you demonstrated. A lead acid battery only delivers its rated amp hours if those amps are low enough that the battery would take 20 hours to discharge. They call it the 20 hour rate or 20HR. That means that a 110 AH battery will hold up for 20 hours if and only if you limit the draw to 5.5 amps. What that means is that if you run the MinnKota motor at full throttle for 1hr 18min you haven't discharged the battery to 50% DOD, but much lower than that. Very few times running the motor for 2+ hours (which is a lower DOD than 80%) will result in reducing your LA batteries' usable life to probably less than half, and LA batteries don't give many charge cycles to begin with. If you actually were to run the MinKota at full throttle for 1hr and 18 min you would not have been going anywhere near 4 MPH for any length of time. The battery voltage would have started sagging early on and would have gotten worse and worse as the time went on, thus slowing the motor's speed. That wouldn't have been the case with the ePropulsion motor. The LiFePO4 battery that you suggested would definitely bypass that problem, but as you said, even in mid 2022, with the prices coming down on the Chinese import batteries, you're talking $700-$800 for a pair of 12.8volt 100ah batteries that can deliver 42 amps. What I want to find is a replacement prop for 12 and 24 volt trolling motors that will give more speed and then a LiFePO4 battery upgrade would be a viable option. Any high pitch props out there for MinKota or Motor Guide?

This looks like a fun motor to put on my kayak if the price was right. But there are some questions I have. What is the real world range again? 12.5 hours at 3.2 mpg? Or 4mph for 3.5 hours? With my trolling motor setup I fish all day. Traveling between 8 to 10 miles on the gps with my 12v 55lb thrust endura max and one everstart maxx 29dc battery, which is 120ah. My top speed in my similar little boat is also 4mph, but I rarely need to go that fast fishing, just when spot hopping. There is a no wake speed limit around the coves I fish also. Total I paid for this setup new 4 years ago was just over $400 and it is still working great. If I spent another 100 bucks on an extra battery I could double my range very easily which would bring my total to $500. I'm just wondering what the advantage is for all that extra money, 2mph? How hard is it to change the built in battery, or how long does it take to charge? What does an extra battery cost?

Not a complete replacement because it can only turn in a rudder arc, and it cannot have features like a trolling motor can with gps, spot-lock, navigating waypoints, taking you back to fishing spots, transducer mounts, etc. Unfortunately right now, as cool as e-props are, the ideal setup is still to have both. The e-prop is a superior outboard, and the trolling motor does many things to keep you on the fish, that the e-prop cannot. I wish that weren't true, because either high end trolling motor or e-prop is an expensive addition to a cheaper, smaller boat, and adding both might cost twice the price of a boat, lol.

@@thewolfhunter That's great. Heart warming even. My point between "made" and assembled is this- a lot of U.S. based companies claim to be "made" in the U.S. What really happens is a majority of the parts are manufactured in other countries, like China, where it is significantly cheaper. Especially electrical parts or plastics. Shipped here, then assembled in a plant like the video you shared. The problem as I see it is Minn Kota has taken it's market for granted. They were once the best. Unfortunately, I feel it doesn't hold true anymore. They have been passed by competitors like Garmin and Lowrance who offer brushless high end trolling motors like the Force and Ghost. Forget ePropulsion, Minn Kota is losing right here in their own backyard in the trolling motor game. Meanwhile companies like ePropulsion, Torquedo and Elco have taken over the electric outboard market while Minn Kota has stood idle. It should speak volumes that the household name of trolling motors has 7 THOUSAND LESS SUBSCRIBERS THAN ME. They aren't with the times. That's ok. Doesn't matter. Guys like you will keep them in business forever by buying it anyway despite the competition producing better products. You want American made. Forget that China already owns half our soil, market, and politicians. You probably touch and own 1,000 things a day made there. So long as your trolling motor is assembled in the US of A.

Thanks for the review, have been using a Minn Kota 40Lb thrust as my main propulsion for the past 20 years on a 12.5 foot inflatable and am debating buying this motor. As this propeller is not weedless how often are you cleaning weeds off? Also how difficult is it to reach the prop? On a Minn Kota of course you can just pull it directly up then with a slight tilt it is easy to reach the prop.
@bdtang
@bdtang 3 жыл бұрын
You can tilt up the epropulsion very easily - just pull the lever and tilt up. It’s really no contest - I went from a 55lb thrust trolling to the epropulsion since the trolling motor wasn’t powerful enough to really fight outgoing tides in the bay but the epropulsion has no problems at all.

@@saskgui the unit shows the run time based on you’re current power you’re using (how much of the throttle 0-1000watts). If you have it full throttle, at 1000 watts should give your 1:15 of run time. If back off just a bit extends the run time quite a bit. When charging, I only take the battery inside to charge and there’s no display except a red or green light to let you know it’s done charging. I ordered the solar charger adapter so you can charge it as it’s running out on the water - plan on getting a small 100watt foldable solar panel to put on top of the small bimini top to see how long it’ll extend the run time.

I feel that buying one of these e-props means dedication to one company to beyond i want my wallet to be dedicated. Me engrish ,s great ay?

Makes me a little nervous since I’m running a li-ion battery, but my best guess is that the electronics in my 40 lb Endura max are the same as in the 55 lb, so hopefully I’ll be OK.

Hmmmmm......... Traxxas 70lb thrust is made for moving a large heavy boat with powerful thrust. I surmise if you increase the prop pitch a little bit it might keep up with the speed of the ePropulsion. There used to be a couple of outfits out there that used to make metal props for trolling motors one was cast aluminum and the other was fabricated stainless steel. Tentatively I don't think it's really a fair comparison, one motor is made for moving a barge around and the others made for making a little boat go. I surmise measuring static thrust would be a good indication of what each motor was designed for that could easily be set up by using a spring scale with the motors running at full power pulling on a rope tied to the dock. On the cost of trolling motors in general I've always thought that they've been way overpriced for what you're getting in the last few years. Good general review, ePropulsion will be a Blazer on a wide square stern canoe with an extra battery.

@@kvn826 I had a 55lb thrust Newport vessel 12v rear trolling motor on my fully built 14ft boat before as I showed early in video. It would run 3.8 on a good day, usually 3.5 -3.6 average. I guess my question is how your determining your speed. My phone app would tell me speeds of 3.8 bit my Lowrance depth finder would say I was running 4.6 mph which was totally not the case. I personally was surprised, I thought for sure the Traxxis in video would get close to 5 mph but it only got 4. One thing not shown in video is I ran my 6hp Navy on the 10 ft tracker as well and it achieved speed of 10.5 mph. What's the problem with that? Well, the Navy achieved top speed of 11.6, over 1 mph faster, in my 12 ft boat. So that showed my for some reason the short and wide tracker 10x36 was actually a slower hull than my 12x32. Basically, results will vary based on boat. One thing I'm confident of, is that the Spirit will outperform any trolling motor no matter the boat but top speeds may vary. Hope this helps, thanks for watching.

@@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats that’s great - no argument on why you choose to work with them. You clearly believe in the product and are a serious user with a lot of knowledge. Most people who are sponsored say up front that they are sponsored so people aren’t assuming or guessing, that’s all. Also, some people (like me) will stumble across this video without seeing anything else that you do, and don’t have the context. Congratulations on being sponsored - not a lot of people get to that point!

If I buy an E propulson motor, some turd might want to steal it from me. That's my fear.

Same as any outboard. Good thing is this one is lighter and easier to lock inside your vehicle.

That’s why you lock it on the boat. Or remove it if your not using it

What if trolling motor had lithium batteries?
@JoeStoffa
@JoeStoffa 3 жыл бұрын
Same here, though Minnkota states that you shouldn’t run over 85% throttle continuously with lithium ion (voltage is higher and doesn’t drop as much under load = more heat).

@@BTSgigafactory I set up a 50 AH Battle Born with a 45 MinnKota Traxx , on a Flycraft and have been able to run all day . I put a Victron solar charger in my battery box, plug in a few hours in the AM/ PM . Going to try the sysco out on a 12’ Port a Boat this spring... would like to try a outboard but have had good performance

Why would you include price of battery charger on trolling motor?
@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats
@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats 2 жыл бұрын
Because battery chargers are a hidden expense and are required to charge batteries. I personally own a 250$ two bank Noco to chsrge all my boats 12v batteries.

Never fished there. This was my first time there, just to film video. We drove to a lake North of Athens to film, it was closed, back tracked south to Yargo. Needed a lake w minimum traffic , it worked but not my first choice.

Maybe it's a hull speed issue. Since you're not getting up on plane a longer boat has a higher hull speed. I put a 24 lb troller on my 2500 pound 22 foot sailboat and was pretty impressed.
