In this video, I will show you the steps that I take when applying Edge Banding. For this video, I wanted to share the technique that I use for applying edge banding. I use heat activated glue edge banding whenever I apply it to any of my plywood projects. The process is quite simple.

A good tip for you: Since the Iron heats both the veneer and the adhesive, it is best to cool them both with a damp cloth. After ironing the veneer down, simply wipe the veneer with a damp cloth to cool and set the adhesive. Any area that did not stick can be reheated to activate the glue and then cool it again with the damp cloth. Trust me, this is the way to go. Great channel. Keep up the great work!

I bought this as a gift for my friend kzbin.infoUgkxcZqgZ8Ynkiz5n_LxIWRlAicuzmz5kCHG who is just starting out in the world of wood work. He loves it!! There is a great section on different wood and what to use for what kind of job and a similar section for tools as well. The projects in it are things you probably would have a go at with clear instructions, pictures, videos and diagrams throughout. Great for a beginner/amateur wood worker.

Coincidentally, I needed to edge band a drawer that had been trimmed leaving the plywood showing. You didn't really show me anything I didn't already THINK I knew, but you confirmed the procedure and gave me confidence to go ahead. The job came out very nicely. Thank you.

Thank you for confirming in my mind how to do this. Someone at the company that makes the edge banding suggested to me to use a piece of parchment paper between the iron and the new edging piece in case you have anything burned onto your iron that might come off onto the new band as you iron it on. I thought that was a great suggestion, as irons often have burnt spray starch on them.

In the cabinetry shop I work at, we flush the edge of the banding to the finished side of the plywood. Then we just take a file and get the overhang off that way. Never seen a edge band trimmer like that, it's really neat

@josher1129 The nice thing about using a file is that it will basically last forever because the glue can easily be removed with a stiff brush, whereas with the edge band trimmer, the blade will gunk up and dull from the glue in the edge banding. What file does your shop use for edge banding?

Major thanks for many great videos! I have a lot of cabinets to build and I don't think I'd get anywhere without the help of your videos. Meanwhile, one edge-banding suggestion borrowed from someone named Stumpy: if the banding has any angled grain, only trim one side at a time and in the direction of the grain. It helps prevent the trimmer blade from digging in and tearing out the edge. I don't know how often that's likely to happen or what increases the risk other than the grain angle (poorly held trimmer??? a dull blade that grabs instead of cuts???) but overall I think it makes sense.

Jason, I have not used edge banding in the past as I'm concerned for its long term adhesion. Have you found that the glue holds up well over the long haul as doors and drawers are used. Also, have you stained any pieces? I ask because I'm wondering if the stain where the edges meet will be darker and draw attention to the glue line. Thanks

Only true if you have nice plywood. I used cheap(er) C3 birch ply from Menards, and all my cuts through the plywood have an extremely fuzzy/ratty quality on half of whatever material they used in the ply. It would take a lot of spackle and sanding to ever get that to look decent, but the edge banding worked like a dream, even if it did take all day to edge banding all the pieces for my project.

Real good video but,,, I noticed the grain issue! I think if you new you were going to edge band it after cutting to spec, you would have cut the grain to follow the edge band material as well. Just a thought. I think your explanation as you go along is great by the way. (subscribed) Thanks, J. Watson

There is no grain issue. It's plywood!

What I was talking about is the direction of the grain and way the band grain run should be the same direction. If the plywood grain is running north to south, your band grain will not match it. it will run east to west.Think about it.
