With Heorot saved from the menace of Grendel, Beowulf can finally leave and get back to adventuring. Except the night before he leaves, the king's advisor is abducted as revenge! Even something as monstrous as Grendel had a mother, and she won't rest until all of the Danes have been slain. So Beowulf dons his armor and seeks out Grendel's mother in her lair, beneath a fetid lake filled with water like acid and so deep no human has ever seen the bottom.

While the CGI movie does deviate from the source material, I like where it went. Just because it's a different point than the book doesn't make it a bad point. They heavily implied that the king mated with the water witch and that Gredel was his son, and that the dragon we see later was the offspring of the water witch and Beowulf, perpetuating the cycle of men who'd rather have a good lay with the water witch than put an end to all the troublesome monsters. The king knew that Beowulf had just perpetuated the cycle, and so publicly named Beowulf his successor and then committed suicide, seemingly to laugh at the impending comeuppance beyond the grave.

Seamus Heaney's translation of this story is one of my favorites. I bought it few years ago for a camping trip and read pretty much the whole thing by the time I got back home (it's only about one hundred pages long). Apparently, it's one of the closest written works that translates it near directly from the original text without adding/removing or editing too much. Worth checking out for anyone who's interested

Good to hear... I literally just bought it last night on eBay and am waiting for it to arrive Thursday! It seems to be the preferred translation among other translators. They say he found a way of keeping the original rules of verse, including stresses and page presentation, without losing the vim and vigor that an action poem should have. I read a sample section and yeah, it was like "Okay, no wonder Tolkien liked this stuff!" I haven't yet read Tolkien's Beowulf translation, but I'm sure that's comin'! :)

Regarding the swords: It's a Christian Message. Grendel and his Mother are descended from Cain, and the first sword Beowulf gets (Hrunting) is given to him by a pagan. That is why Grendel cannot be harmed by such mortal blades. Whereas magic sparkling sword from seemingly nowhere (read: God) kills her.

I remember reading this in school and never finding an explanation of what Grendel's mother was supposed to be. Not even my teacher knew (then again, my teacher though "Mead Hall" was the proper name of Heorot). So she was a water witch?

Well technically the poem never actually says anything about what she is or what she looks like other than that she's tall. There are some kennings but it's unclear how literal they're meant to be. She's described as a sea wolf but like Beowulf also means bee wolf so. She does use armor and knives and in the poem Grendel not using weapons is a big part of his monstrousness so she could just be like a really powerful warrior like Beowulf himself.
