Hey Spirit, your comment about camels in the expansions got me thinking. Have you done a video just on the base (non civ) differences between base and new expansions in HD? I hadn't realized they had made that change to camels and would be interested to learn more now that I am finally branching out and playing expansion games online as well.

I would personally give their cav an A+ since Paladins are pretty unnecessary in most games imo, and hardly give much of a population efficiency and extra pierce armour value over Cavaliers with Bloodlines. Just as a disclaimer I am not claiming Pallies are useless, or discrediting them in any way though, and they certainly have their place for civilisations like the Franks or for games where trade is available. Until then, however, 20% cheaper Knights or Cavaliers in Imperial Age are a vast advantage over everyone else's Knights! Much like, as I would like to compare, the extra 30% HP on the Mongol Light Cav line before the opponents pick up the last cavalry armour upgrade. Probably that comparison took some crack and became the Berber bonus XD Their cav discount, by face value, much overwhelms the Magyars' discount for *only* scouts too. Yes, head on, I am totally sold on them losing to Pallies on equal cost, but they do have the cheaper Camels which are nearly on the same level as Byzantines, except, they also have Bloodlines and Blast Furnace! All in all, it's the Turks' tech tree for cavalry on steroids :p Also, your application of the Lanchester's Square kinda reminded me of the 'Is the Paladin Upgrade Worth It?' video mini-series - that '23% stronger' seems to be what I get when I use the result from multiplication of stat improvement ratios (I remember as 52%), then take its square root - very good find! I remember that 44 Pallies and 54 Cavaliers are about evenly matched, which is a 22.7% numbers advantage for the Cavaliers, and squaring that gives 50.6% power advantage that almost cancels out with the 52% stronger Pallies per unit! Kudos to you, Spirit :) Great review as always! I will give an A+ for it too ;)

Ah yes, my favorite anti-Mongol and anti-Hun civilization. Great stuff. One thing you should've mentioned with the Berber water bonus, though, is that it makes their Fire Ships and Demo Ships much more capable of reaching their targets. 10% speed might seem modest, but on water that's a big difference. For instance, it lets Berber Fast Fire Ships catch Viking Longboats, whereas every other civilization's ships (besides Demo ships) get outrun by Longboats.

I always thought that the Berbers would be the most OP of the African Kingdom civs when they were first being talked about. I felt this way because I always considered "Good Knight rush" to be synonymous with "Good civ", and Berbers had an awesome Knight rush. This made me come to the conclusion that they were going to be over powered and make for a stale meta. Now days, I feel like they're just perfectly balanced. I don't play them much since I'm not one for Knight rushing, but when I land them on random, I do enjoy myself. As for a request...I know you'll probably be doing all the African Kingdoms civs now. But when you get to Rise of the Rajas, can you do my favourite civ in the game (Yes, even more than the Byzantines D:), the Khmer?

In my view, Berbers are an easy target for civilisation like Indians. Imperial Camel cuts through the cavalry and their infantry can be countered by the archers. A knight rush has to be defended though but having Camels does help.

I like how you look at different team bonuses with the special team units. Man all these expansion units being anti - unit type - unit type. P0P218 Bonus-wise, they don't mesh well. Goths wouldn't benefit much, since they can train Huscarls from barracks. Still, the Genitour is nice to have. As for Berbers, they don't have great infantry, and their cavalry rushes are so good that they probably won't make much use of the Goth barracks bonus. Gameplay-wise, though, I think it could work well together. Berbers can use their great knight rush to buy the Goths time to build a powerful economy, then they raid and play support while the Goths flood with their infantry. This way, the Berbers offset the Goths's weaker early game, and the Goths offset the Berbers' somewhat weaker late game, when lacking halberdier and paladin can bite them in the butt.

What about berbers bonus of movement speed and both wheelbarrow and hand cart? In video you showed just table for wheelbarrow. When we count generic villager with both wheelbarrow and hand cart its speed is 0,968 on the other hand berber villager with both has speed 1,0648. Thank you for amazing video and answer to my question :) PS I am starting to be curious about ratio of gathering, walking and bringing of resources to TC during farming.

Lanchester's square law is a nice addition, but in meele fights it's way less of a factor than in ranged vs ranged fights, where units are constantly fightning, especially taking in consideration the bad pathfinding in the game, especially when rallied to battle.

1:51 Since this video might have new players in the audience, it might be worth noting that the "faster walk speed" bonus is not primarily an economic bonus. The more important factor of this bonus is that it enables Berber player to move villagers around the map faster, which is very useful in various situations: nomad, build military buildings next to your enemy, laming, boxing your enemy with walls, rushing for far away gold or stone mines, etc.. The bonus is a utility which enables all kinds of shenanigans and the economic upsides of the bonus are just side effects; not it's primary function.

Hey Spirit, I'd argue that the ship speed bonus gives their fire ships and demos a nice advantage on water. It's small, but being able to close the gap a bit faster with those units makes can make a huge difference in the long run!

Just to add, I also think that the no minimum range on the Inca Genitour might actually harm it when dealing with pikes. That automatic retreat it does when it's out of range would be a nice defense mechanism when surrounded by pikemen.

They've been my favorite civ since african kingdoms came out, sorry franks! I absolutely love my knights and having great ranged units makes them oh so perfect. The castle age camel archer is basically a heavy cavalry archer that create waaaay faster, even without Kashba. I really think they should be an A+ cavalry civ though, the fact they are only missing paladins is weighed out by the sheer cheapness of the units.

I usually play britons or mongols, but I like berbers too especially after researching agribah camels. My friend likes to play Gurjaras, so I should team up with him and bennefit from faster created camels. I'm glad to see they bennifit from herbal medicine, that ought to give them some battlefield longevity and save some gold that might otherwise be wasted.

I dont understand why AOE3 is so underestimated, each civ is actually different and in aoe2 most of the skins are the same, they just have or have not access to some units whereas in aoe3, at least 50% of the units per faction is unique (euro civs, in warchiefs and dynasties it's 100% unique compared to other nations)

I just got back into Aoe 2 and I wanted to play a camel civ and I picked berbers are they a good civ to learn the game with. Plus I love the genitor and there unique units and cav archers are cool. I don’t care about being super good. Just want to have fun and learn the game I had a great fast castle but I am rusty now trying to get back to it. Trying to learn to play the flank though where feudal raiding more important so I picked berbers for those reasons

I disagree with the statement that Berbers can counter Mongols. In a vacuum, the camel archer seems like a perfect counter to mangudais. In reality though, once the mongol player puts some rams in the front, or even better, gets to siege onagers, the camel archers quickly melt away. Especially with the fast siege rams and mangudai anti siege bonus, putting your own rams as Berbers will definitely fail. Even camels are relatively squishy against mangudais if the mongol player micros well.

i like there forward castle strategy nothings more scary that a wave of shotel warriors in my opinion

It's scary but not impossible to counter and it's extremely high-risk-high-reward. Shotel Warriors have terrible durability for their cost, so if you have enough archers you can slaughter them and make your enemy waste a ton of gold. They also don't kill buildings as fast as when AK was first released due to nerfs (Shotels sniping TCs was too strong). Of course, if you don't want a swarm of Shotel Warriors sniping your TCs, the best way is to stop the Ethiopians from ever getting them out. Pressure their gold miners whenever possible and force them to spend on other stuff.

The intro is so misleading - the reason that onager shot works is 'cos the knights and cav archers are Briton units without bloodlines. Try that against the huns or mongols and say goodnight to your siege.

Actually for knights the Berbers bonus is technically better than Turks and Slavs rolled into one because you don't spend as much wood reseeding farms as Slavs would.

you kind of tend to look at the details on their own a tad too much with these, without any real emphasis on the "optimal niche" or true dynamic of the civ all-in-all. it's not all that interesting to know a civ has a C- anything when it's not put into the perspective of why that is and where they're compensated for it.

The reason why Camel Archers have no bonus against Conquistadors is because Conquistadors have no cavalry archer armor..
