I'm very sad to see Bercow go. Whatever your opinion of him, he has initiated many reforms in the position as speaker aimed at increasing the accessibility of the British parliamentary system to the public and allowing MPs with families to attend parliamentary sittings. And while his impartiality has often been called into question, it was always very evident that if anything Bercow was partial to parliament first and foremost. His voice always encouraged discussion from both sides of the chamber and brought a bit of order into the kindergarten that is the House of Commons. This has of course put him on the flamingolist of many of the more populist voices that felt he was being unfair to them, but a speaker should and must have the confidence and conviction to stand up to his detractors without being shunned into silence. Whoever the next speaker shall be, they will have some very big shoes to fill.

One of Bercow's best qualities was his unswerving devotion to maintain the integrity of Parliament, something he did almost instinctively. In the next few months, during the undeniable turbulence of Brexit, the new Speaker should hold the same principles. As such, given her vast political experience, the only valid option for the role is Harriet Harman.
@andrewbowman46115 жыл бұрын
No, I mean his devotion to uphold Parliamentary democracy. Did he get things wrong? Certainly, but that's more the fault of the ambiguous nature of the British constitution. Bercow irks those on the left, right, and centre. That's as non-partisan as it's possible to be. I don't doubt that he occasionally crossed the line but he could always justify his actions according to the terms of his office. Arguably, he's been the most effective speaker since Betty Boothroyd.

Parliament's role is not to uphold the will of the people. Its role is to do what's best for the country. As is becoming increasingly evident, leaving the EU without a deal in place would not be good for Britain. Johnson's peculiar brand of sledgehammer tactics go against Parliamentary law. Bercow has exhausted himself pointing this out, both during the current premiership and the previous one.

Wouldn't mind learning from you guys a little about the various key committees in the house. For instance, the ways and means committee.

The Scottish MP who told the potentially drunk Tory MP's to "whistle down a bit" when he was addressing parliament after the final GE vote last week would definitely get my vote. :D

I like Harman's pitch. Laing and Bryant would also be good choices, IMO.

The house should refrain from clapping. The convention dictates that “hear, hear” should suffice.

I am not happy. I demand a giant red button in front of the new speaker that will play a recording of John Bercow saying "ORRDDAAAAAAAAAAA".

Interesting to contrast this to the Australian role of Speaker of the House (of Representatives). The speaker here is generally chosen each session of parliament, but by convention the incumbent is chosen. They invariably come from the party which holds a majority in the House, and they do not resign from the party.
