Those wheels look mega. Darren’s a really knowledgeable guy. I bought some wheels three years ago that have been abused through 3 winters and my 115kg plus frame and they’ve not missed a beat. Still as true as the day I bought them and they’ve covered around 12k miles. In the process of having some carbon rims made now off them. Wouldn’t go anywhere else for wheels

Nice vid, you can tell he's built a few wheels from the way he can keep his hand still and use it to see if the wheel is out of true before he adjusts each spoke.

If you were able to go back in time I'd suggest that you go with 650 wheels and tyres rather than 700. Much easier to swap in some 650's on a disc brake. The 650 rims are lighter, 650 tyres are lighter, the spokes will be lighter and there will be a gearing advantage with the circumference being about 7% less. Changing to 23mm 650C tyres and rims would give you maybe a 1/2kg weight saving.

There are carbon titanium spokes that are lighter and more aero. The rotational drag of the spokes still maters up a hill.

Have you used berd spokes yet? I like a comparison of metal spokes vs berd spokes of speed vs watts (I'm wondering if berd reduce power put down on road bikes, mainly as curious on direction for fixie) I got a 6.7kg planet x rtd 90 without berd spokes

Yes I’ve used them. They feel more comfortable but I don’t think that there’s much of a drop off with power personally. I see how they’ve be fantastic for mtb and gravel for example

Be good to know how these feel in comparison to the standard spikes you had before in real life riding. Also if a nipple broke (as I’m sure the spikes won’t) how easy is it to replace ourselves, or does it need to go back to a wheel builder to calibrate?

I’d always go back to a wheel builder if a nipple or spike broke to be honest. The ride quality is very good! Almost takes away some more road buzz which would explain why they are popular for cyclocross and mtb

Darren built me up a set of Berd spoke wheels for my MTB 18 months ago. They have been faultless and haven’t needed any adjustments. What really surprised me was the added comfort they bring , by really taking the sting out of the trails. Highly recommended 👍

@@jonpierce2395 that’s music to my ears. I just didn’t want to buy an off the shelf wheelset as an upgrade, as have used zipps etc and just paying for the name. If I spend decent money I want bespoke decent wheels
