Perfect timing, I went into the gun room after my lesson yesterday and after trying a few have ear marked this exact gun for my first gun. I wanted to find some reviews from women who’ve shot it and couldn’t find anything and then lo and behold this video appears! I won’t be buying for a while as I’m still waiting for my SGC but this was a really helpful video to watch! Thanks guys!

Hi, L and I think it’s important for a lady to test a ladies gun. I like the gun because I’m 5ft and it fits my small frame. Depending on your height you mind find the gun a bit cramped and therefore better going for a 686 or 525.

Another terrific video, thanks!! I am looking to tempt my wife to take up the sport (probably more sporting than other disciplines I think) and was looking at an ex-demo Berretta 691 Vittoria with an adjustable comb. My wife is also rather 'fun sized' and I think pretty close in size to the delightful Mrs P. I would appreciate any views you might have with regard to suitability of that gun as a first gun. The deal I have lined up sits at the top end of our budget (nothing cheap about buying firearms in Australia). As an aside, based on reviews I have seen on the 693 Vittoria, I would be really keen to shoot the 691 Vittoria as well, so no loss if my dearest chooses not to continue in the sport.

This is an ideal first gun for a smaller shooter, and if they like it, a forever gun as the actions are pretty much unburstable.

Hi Lloyd and Dee, I shot a new Beretta 686 SP1 and the hinge for the barrel was SUPER stiff. Besides lubrication and shooting it a lot do you have any recommendations for loosening it up. It was very hard to close the barrel. Thank you for all your information. I appreciate it

Afternoon. The secret is getting the right grease in the right spots. You don’t need to shoot the begin a lot for it to get comfortable to open if you grease it in the high friction spots with a good quality engineering grease. Fortunately I’ve done a guide video on the subject.

Any thoughts on o/u vs. autoloaders for ladies? The interest in autoloading is for further reduction of felt recoil. I know there is a certain stigma associated with autoloaders...but might it be worth it for the recoil reduction?

I don’t understand why more ladies don’t shoot autos, they are light, handy, low recoil, and generally low length of pull. The downside is that they are usually super flat and will be too low for many ladies. That is easily remedied, I just think there is an image problem; dare I suggest that they look a bit macho and ladies prefer a more elegant classy look. A subject for discussion I think.

Great to see Mrs P. out again. I had the calculator out the other day and had a look at recoil and it seemed that velocity of the cartridges seemed to have a greater effect on recoil, proportionately, than weight of the gun; 50 fps made more difference than 200g of gun weight. This is just pen and paper stuff; what are your real life experiences?

I would tend to agree generally. That said however, fit makes a HUGE difference to felt recoil, as do weight, balance, cast, pitch, and drop. Saying speed is more important than weight ignores a bunch of other factors.

@@lloydyp I couldn't get gunfit into the calculator (tee hee), but I think you're right, it is a cumulative thing; the effect of it and the way the body handles it. I looked into to it because quite often people cite the heavier 12 as better than the lighter 20 for handling it; I wondered how much.

I got my wife a lesson from a good instructor at a ground with dedicated layouts for beginners (Bywell). Giving the beginner space to learn on easy targets away from a crowd without the fear / nerves of standing in front of 20 guys is the way to give the bug a chance to bite.

The fashion is great! We all dress up in our best shooting clobber for ladies days. Depending on where you are in the UK, there are Shotgun and Chelsea bun club ladies days. There are beginners and experienced categories so she’ll be with other newbies. I’ve been to quite a few and they are great fun, usually includes coaching and afternoon tea and cakes.

Great review. I see that that Mrs P purchased the 28 inch version. My wife is looking to buy the same gun - 686 sporting Vittoria 28 inch barrels with adjustable comb. My wife is just 5’3, so I was interested to know if your good lady had any other adjustments made when she purchased the 28 inch version, such as the actual wood of the stock being shortened or altered etc, or was it a case of just adjusting the comb, having the smallest micro core pad on the back and keeping it at 13.75 LOP as per the 30 inch she shot in the video?

Hi, I’m 5ft 0 and the 28” barrel length and weight suits me perfectly with very little recoil. It balances well. The only change we made was adjusting the comb to suit my face. I doubt she’ll need to change the pad. The best thing to do is to try one in your local shop if they have a tester or used Vittoria. If not, just mount it (no carts of course) and the shop will be able to advise if any adjustments are needed. She’ll love it, I love mine. X
