What is the right choice? The Beretta A300 Ultima Patrol or Mossberg 940 Pro Tactical? Which 12 gauge tactical shotgun is right for you? I generally pay little heed to reviews due to the simple fact that 99% of the people doing them act like they are walking on eggshells when it comes to issuing any legitimate criticism of a firearm. Such reviews are a disservice to the listeners because they fall well short of the type of honest evaluation potential buyers are hoping to see. This is especially troubling when it come to gun purchases because there are few instances where one can actually 'try out' a firearm before buying it. I weighed out all the pros/cons on 590 vs 870, 930/940 vs A300, 1301T, M1014, AR style mag shotguns, and anything that would check boxes. The absolute overall winner by a small but important margin was the 1301T. While I was on the fence between standard and pistol grip stock, I got an email about the Mod2. That day I got off the fence and ordered in a 1301T Mod 2 with the Mesa pistol grip. I absolutely do not regret my decision. However, at some point I may still get an A300 to leave in the truck. The tiger stripe was pretty tempting, seriously. 590A1 is the only mossberg I think is priced according to its actual factual value. Jerry may be running a “940” but it isn’t anything like the production gun, to be sure. Keep putting out solid reviews brother.

Thank you! I’m sure you are super happy with that 1301! I have a 1301 competition about 7 years ago and it was fantastic. They are hard to beat. Mossberg makes a good pump gun, but to say they make a shotgun that truly competes with what Beretta, Benelli or Franchi makes, they do not.

I've seen your other videos on the A300 but I've not yet purchased. Everything I see indicates that this Beretta sets the new standard. I've owned my A300 patrol since Dec put about 600+ rounds through multiple different loads hasn't jammed once its very smooth and quality. Best bang for your buck. If you have beneli money then get one. If you wanna save money and still have fun get an a300.

Before I bought a shotgun I had shot my brother's A400 Xcel and really, really liked it, but I wanted something more "general purpose" that I could either use as a home defense tool or take to his place and shoot clays with it from time to time. That said, the internals on the A400 are more like the 1301, so the A300 isn't going to be a perfect match, but that's what I ended up going with. It loads just as smoothly as the better models (and better according to some reviewers). I just have to get it out and test it and try out a few different dots to see what I like best on it. Awesome value for the price!

My only complaint with my A300 is the cheap polymer sites. My rear was broken from the store I bought it from. Obviously it was dropped. I wish I could find some aftermarket steel replacements?? I own a 930 JM pro and it has been excellent too. I agree that it needs cleaned more often.

Thanks for comparison + series. I bought a 940 in late '22 after a shit experience w/ a Stoeger M3000. I've really enjoyed the 940 and haven't had a failure through about 600 rounds. I like the recessed optic cut and low-profile front sight. I would concede most of the other objective points you hit though. I don't have any experience w/ Beretta but I'll have to handle one of these next time I'm in the store. Always good to get something in hand and feel it out and the grey looks excellent. I just recently installed an HB Industries Barrel Clamp + QD/MLOK setup on the 940 - which lets me mount a light way up tight to the barrel and flush at the end. I need to test it next week. No loss of light to barrel shadow.

@@dnut1987 I could not get it to cycle anything reliably. Tried a bunch of different ammo. I sent it back 2x, they said it only runs a certain DRAM level and to use that spec ammo. I also had the plastic ghost sight break when they shipped it back to me.

And most semi autos like 3 dram or better , shooting less than a 3 dram in any semi auto is asking for issues . I’ve had no problems with mine at all and shoot it every weekend with a multitude of rounds including 1280 fps # 8 I wouldn’t worry about your m3000

In my country (Thailand) the price of guns is very expensive. Beretta and Benelliare the same price, so most people prefer Bennelli Thai barettas are rarely used. Personally I use the 940 pro tac as it is 2 times cheaper than the beretta. Good review.

I chose the Patrol - they're both good enough but the Patrol is compatible with all the chokes I have for my 3-gun Stoeger comp gun AND my A300 Ultima duck gun so I'm already 'familiar' with it. Being cheaper and available was just a bonus.

I have an FN SLP mk1 I picked up a few years back, when they were blowing them out for $899. Phenomenal shotgun, but I've been wanting something shorter and lighter. Really tempted on the 1301m2, found the A300 for $875 shipped, which is literally about half the cost. Never been a fan of mossberg autos, but both of my pump guns are 590a1's. I appreciate the comparison.

I own both and couldn't agree more on your assessment. The Beretta is just better quality shotgun from fit and finish to performance and reliability. Although depending on your needs, the Mossberg wouldn't be a bad choice. However, looking back... I would've rather saved my $$$ and bought the 1301. Just my 2 cents...

Absolutely no issues you have or manufactured with my 940 Pro Tactical. I was waiting for a Beretta 1301 Tactical which I ordered in 2019 and gave up on it in 2022 and gott the 940, but my only complaint with Mossberg is after getting it and cleaning it up I noticed some marring/scratches on the finish which Mossberg said they will not fix.

I almost bought the mossberg, I did by the mossberg jm pro ,I like it was hoping to use it as a competition gun ,so I decided on the a300 for a tactical shot gun ,and I am glad I did the fit and finish is very good ,my cousin got the 1301 and I still like mine better . I payed good money for the jm pro, and I think they need to give the customers their money's worth . I have tried to out run them both and can't and they both eat what I put in them but the a300 feel is hands down the better gun

I own the A300 and I shoot it often and high rapid fire as fast as my AR15s with no problems. I owned the mossy 930 and got rid of it. Crap compared to A300. I got the berretta for $850.

Beretta sells a shell lifter upgrade ($69) that fits the 1301 & A300. It stays up, out of the way, when loading. MUCH faster and no pinch.

My 930 is better than my 940. 940 failed to load 7 shells after all my comm with MB I went ahead and changed the spring and extension tube with 930 parts, no issues after. Only issue now is you cannot rack to unload like my 930 A300 M4 and 1301. I don't know why.

While I wonder if your hand guard issue on the Mossberg is your example only, I understand that you have to comment on what you have and I think it was a very good review. Now for a request. The Savage Renegauge Security is reputed to be an excellent shotgun but it doesn’t get many, if any, reviews. Would you not only do a review of that shotgun, but if you can compare it to the Beretta Ultima Patrol? Just the review would be very helpful as the competition and hunting guns have gotten some good reviews but they have been sparse and I don’t want to extrapolate to the Security version when that might not translate. Yeah unfortunately I found the handguard issue to be present on 4 others I picked up at stores as well. In regards to the Savage Renegauge, based off what I felt shotshow and shot at shotshow, it’s a better shotgun than the mossberg. Very nice in fact and a great competitor to the Beretta. That would be good! Let’s see if we can make that happen!

I’m just glad Remington is leaving New York and is no longer the freedom group. I prefer pump guns myself. I have a number of 870’s and 590’s (not A1’s). The 870 is a smoother gun. I believe that’s because it doesn’t cock the hammer until about halfway through the slide action whereas the mossberg starts cocking the hammer at the beginning of the slide action. However, I’ve had my 870’s get sluggish when hot and I’ve never experienced that with any 500/590 series gun. I do have one auto shotgun (1187) which seems to run well but it’s mega heavy and doesn’t run low brass like they claim. Thanks for the great content.

I like my 940. And I have a 1301 mod2 as well.. The mossberg is my Chevy and the 1301 in my Cadillac. I've had no issues with the mossberg at all. Not one hiccup out of the 940. It's in the truck the 1301 is by the nightstand 🤷🏿‍♂️

If the A300 texture is too "bity", you can easily sand it down a little with sand paper, just removing the sharp tips. Grips well. Less abrasion.

I've seen vids with how the Beretta had issues then poor customer service. Even with that, when they did get their shotgun back from Beretta with no explanation what was done, it did work. With Mossberg 940 issues, better customer service but some still with the same issues they sent it in for. I'm staying with my 590S pump, but if I bought an auto, even before this vid, I'd go with the Beretta. Too many people in the know singing praises for it.

I don't know about the newer Remington V3s, but they usually were/are pretty solid performers. There is a V3 tac version, and are underrated in my opinion.

I wouldn't choose either one. I have an HR Pardner pump. Did my own smith work on the barrel and receiver, then added a magazine extension; it was $167. The extension and red dot, another $100.

At first when i saw the review i felt a bit attacked since im a mossberg fanboy especially since i own the mavrick 88 which is a fantastic pump for the price. I was still on edge if i should get a 940 or an A300 since both cost the same. Afterwards i realized the A300 is just a better quality for the price.

My Mossberg 930 home security has bern absolutely flawless from 8s to slugs but Mossy semis can be a little hit or miss on reliability it seems from reviews.... The Beretta a300 seerms to be better in reliability from video reviews..... Again glad mine works well

Have them both and love the A300 patrol but I still love the 940 pro as it’s still an amazing shotgun and I have over 1500 rds through it without one failure so everyone who’s talking crap about the 940 either don’t have one haven’t shot one or are droids repeating crap that isn’t even true about the gun. Based on this review, I do agree that the Beretta is a better shotgun than the Mossberg. It's interesting because other reviews didn't have the same issues with that Mossberg as you did. The only thing the Beretta is missing is a pistol grip, but I will definitely consider it while I'm researching shotguns! Do you have a preference for semi automatic shotguns or pump action? (In general and from a home defense perspective). Thank you!

Semi Auto Shotguns all day over Pump guns for every single aspect of life. Whether that’s hunting, sport shooting or defensive use. A well made semi auto shotgun in my experience has shown either just as or more reliable then pump guns I have used. The issues we had with the mossberg are fairly widespread and common, more like they just aren’t a really reliable semi auto. This has always been the case for me and others I know, I watched people I competed against in 3 gun use their 930 JM Pros and get the same issues as the 940. Meanwhile my 1301 fired round after round of whatever I wanted to put through it without issue.

But hearing that, I can't deny the truth of it, especially because a semi-auto shotgun, assuming it's reliable of course, will fire faster than a pump, thereby being better for home security. I greatly appreciate your advice on this, and I will take it to heart. But it does make me curious on how you feel about the Benelli M4 compared to the Beretta 1301?

Why? These two guns are the exact same on paper for price. The 1301 is a better gun but it’s gonna cost you. Is it better enough to justify? That depends on wallet size
