I have a Howa S/A varmint weight 308 set up in a Boyds stock, I purchased the barreled action for 250$ on sale about 5 years ago. I got bored putting together AR's and wanted an all-purpose precision rifle. My intent was to glass the action, this however was thwarted when I put the stock on and went to the range. The first 3 rounds after sight in with some military 147gr, changed my plans. Loading 3 rounds of 168 gr. match, I fired my first group. The 3 rounds made one ragged hole. Ever hear the expression," don't fix something that works?" I've thought about a chassis, but once again, this is a solid MOA rifle, actually 3/4 is common.

I have a 22 250 Howa, and the B14 Bergara 6.5 Creed and absolutely love them. Iv hunted (coyotes/varmints) with them both for the first time last year. I had Night vision on the Howa and thermal along with suppressor on my 6.5 CM. I killed 116 yotes, 2 fox, and 3 bobcats. I know they are two totally different caliber, but it makes no difference, they are both awesome. The 6.5 trigger pull, and bolt is without a doubt better. Love shooting 4000 + with the 22 250 so it’s the best of both worlds.

Great, thorough, informative review. My first Howa 1500 carried the Mossberg brand in the late 1980s. I bought it at a major discount for my oldest boy for his first elk hunt. The stamped sheet metal bolt release and safety lever looked cheap, but they have never failed in 35 years. The two position safety not locking the bolt has resulted in the bolt being pulled open while scrambling through brush and an empty chamber when the rifle was brought up to fire. Luckily, this has been fixed with the three position safety in the more recent edition of the Howa 1500 that I purchased 5 years ago. The trigger on the early rifle was horrible and I replace it with a Timney. The newer factory triggers are vastly better, only a little tiny grittiness. I haven't replaced the latest trigger with a Timney, but I think about it every time I fire the rifle at the range; in the field I never notice it. The first Howa has served as an intro hunting rifle for two sons and two grandsons. The second I bought in 2018 and carried a Weatherby Vanguard brand. I restocked it with a Bell and Carlson stock to my dimensions. We have killed dozens of elk between us with these two Howa rifles, although my go-to rifle from 1978 to 2018 was a Ruger 77 with a custom barrel. One grandson will leave Colorado next summer when he graduates and live with his uncle in Alaska. For his first rifle purchase before moving, I'm suggesting Howa, Tikka or Begara. If it were me, I'd choose a Howa.

You can't do any better than Howa. I've got a few of these rifles and they are just as accurate as any of the rest of my hunting rifles. I always use fireformed brass and neck size only besides trimming and chamforing. I have tailor made ammunition for each and every rifle in my inventory. I only use Sierra pro Hunter bullets for everything except when hunting for moose and Buffalo. The nosler partition has been my favorite bullet for the biggest and meanest critters agoin.

My howa 1500 in 25-06 shoots 115vld hand loads into one hole at 100yds. The only thing I've changed was the trigger. Still has the "Tupperware" stock and factory barrel. My bergara is a premier series HMR in 300prc. It shoots half moa out to 1300yds with the 212gr precision hunter from hornady. My tikka is in 223rem and shoots moa with a half dozen factory loads from 62-75gr. Maybe I've been lucky in getting good rifles but I've done my research also. I’m 20 seconds in and, having seen it’s the guy who gets 40% off his Howa rifles for his favourable reviews, I’m already wondering about the conclusion. I’ll watch with interest and comment when I get there... Well, there’s an element of objectivity and good to see both get the thumbs up despite an obvious leaning toward the Howa throughout. I’m not overly upset and happy to declare why. I like researching before I buy. I did lots and had Tikka and Howa in mind. The biggest gripe about either seemed to be the budget price of the Howa (never really understood griping about a favourable price). So, Howa 1500 in .223, 24” heavy barrel in Boyd laminate stock, full barrel break in procedure got (even with an inexperienced shooter like me) moa out of the box. Happy days! Some home loads and I’ve had less than 1/4 moa. Even happier days! I wanted a .308 so another Howa was always on the cards. When I went to a shooting show and saw effectively the same rifle (in .308 with brown laminate stock instead of ash grey) reduced by almost 50%, it was a no-brainer. Five minutes later, it was mine. Same barrel break-in, around moa even out to 600 yds and home loads yet to be tried. With the limited experience of these two rifles I would recommend Howa every day of the week. Do I think there are better rifles out there - probably. Do I think the (approx) 50% added cost would make me a better shooter - not convinced on that but open to someone giving it a go.

I get a discount on most rifles but it usually off an msrp cost so its not a huge margin. No rifle company at this time actually pays me or gives anything of meaningful value for free. If you watch my first bergara videos on the hmr. I was nothing but excited until it wouldn't shoot properly any negativity towards bergara is founded on my experience with them or build design. Also a fair deal of my howa videos were produced before i got discounts from anyone. Whats funny is the first howa hs precision I bought was cheaper at sportsmans guide where I bought it than the discount i was offered lol. Also no one says i have to give a positive review on rifles. I got about 40% off the msrp on that bergara.

I think a lot of the complaints you have with the Howa can easily be mitigated by just buying a Weatherby Vanguard, of course made by Howa. A majority of the Weatherby Vanguard models are cerakoted and a lot of them include a brake standard. I’ve always felt that the Weatherby stock is much nicer than the Howa stock. I can’t stand the trigger (Howa or Weatherby Vanguard) so I replace them with a Timney single stage, but it still retains the 3 position safety…it’s just a more quality feeling part. One thing I’m surprised you didn’t mention is that the Howa bolt has pressure vents, in the event that you have a round that over pressures in the chamber. They are known to be one of the safest actions made due to this feature.
@cacinaz8802
@cacinaz8802 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for that. I also like that I can remove the firing pin from the bolt very easily. When reloading, it is a good practice to take the bolt out, remove the pin, then check the sizing of your brass by putting each case into the receiver and closing the bolt. You would be surprised that some cases are not sized correctly and the bolt won't close. Removal of the firing pin is a safety check. If you check brass sizing before loading, it saves time and a potential danger. Imagine a dangerous game animal charging and you can't chamber a round?

Maybe you could add some wooden pegs to the wall behind you and shift to the right side of the frame. First off I'm not down on Howa, and I would'nt say that I will never own one but it will more than likely be a Weatherby Vangaurd if I do. Howa makes decent actions and barrels. Their stocks all come from vendors. Most come in a Hogue variety, either the slippery, very lite, cheap, flexible polymer, (not composite style) or the heavy pillar bedded rubber overmolded stocks that also tend to flex. I think some use Stocky's but the HS Precision is the exception to the rule and the bright spot to this rifle. The actions on the Howas are known to be sloppy and rough. Howa also tends to put thin contour #2 barrels on everything even heavy hitters like that 300 PRC which looks hideous with that ungodly muzzle brake you have adapted to it. I would love to see its groups BTW. I can only imagine the amount of barrel whip. I do like 3 position safeties, but I've never had an issue with a bolt opening because I have the rifle in hand going through the thick stuff. I cant say anything about the the 2 stage HACT trigger never used one but the Begara single stage is awesome from the factory, easily adjustable and shouldnt need replacement. Begara actions are extremly smooth, solid and reliable. I've never had an extraction issue, they are an improved version of the Rem 700, enough said. Begara produces their own fibre reinforced composite stocks that are actually an extremely good value. They are of high quality, stiff, and provide superior purchase to polymer. They are aluminum pillar bedded unlike what you stated about them using epoxy or some BS. Fact is every Begara rifle comes with the same quality stock regardless of model except for walnut. You make a big issue out of the sandwiched recoil lug that's been used on Rem 700's since '62 and has never been an issue that I'm aware of. The reason they use this design is because the action is made from cylidrical bar stock which cut's cost in manufacturing and provides a much more accurate platform thats easier to bed. The only issues I've ever heard about comprimised recoil lugs comes from Tikka. This design was found to be superior to flat bottom forged actions with integral recoil lugs. Long story short I dont feel this is an entirely accurate evaluation of the 2 rifles. I would really like to see some targets though. Just curious.

Thanks for this review. I am going with the Howa for the simple reason I want a rifle chambered in 223 Remington. and the H-S Precision offers this caliber. Bergara makes great rifles but does not offer 223 at least anymore. But I watched for your opinion on the H-S Precision. Question - the H-S Precision comes with a 22" standard barrel but if I buy a barreled action the barrel is heavy at 20". I prefer the heavier barrel. I can go to Stocky's and get this same stock or another stock of my choice since many fit the Howa 1500 action. Opinion?

Very nice review. We all have different opinions of what we would like. It does seem that the Bergara gives you more bang for the buck. There is something to be said for being able to adjust the trigger yourself as well. I don't feel that a little bit of flex in a stock makes much difference at all as many do looking at gun reviews. Almost all pillars and different types of bedding work and do the job whether metal, epoxy, glass whatever. I am looking to get a PRC rifle but have not yet decided on a 6.5 PRC or a 300 PRC. It may depend on which one I can get the ammo or brass for seeing they are both so hard to come by right now. Your review was very fair and an enjoyable watch.

Very interesting to see! I am trying to decide between a Howa in GRS fenris stock with 22“ hunter barrel or a 24 heavy barrel and a bergara hmr wilderness for hunting, but I guess the later two are too heavy for hunting? Quite difficult to find the weight for all the howas versions. Tending towards the howa with the lighter 22“ barrel because of the weight. Any opinion on that? 🙋🏻‍♀️

I own both a Bergara Ridge in a 7mm-08 and a Howa 1500 Hogue in a .223. The Howa has way more flex in the forearm than the Bergara. The Bergara will shoot a 1" moa with just about anything I shoot through it whereas the Howa will shoot 2"-3" groups with the best factory ammo. I emailed Howa 1 1/2 to 2 months ago and still haven't heard back. Good customer service

The hogue is the cheapest model howa. Although even that should still shoot around 1 moa. I would clean it and tighten action screws. I usually recommend the howa hs precision over the hogue but those have gone up in price.

@@Bullets4Bucks I broke it in according to OM, checked all screws including scope mount, even swapped scopes with no avail. Tried at least 15+ different recipes with different bullets and also different factory ammo. Would hate to trade it and give someone else the problems. Right now it just sits in the corner and probably will until I just give it away to one on the kids and if they don't want it I'll just hang it in the shed so I don't have to look at it. I've owned numbers of guns in my life and this is the only one that disappoints.

@@joetietjen527 the Howa and Bergara are both great rifles. I’ve owned two heavy barrel howa’s, and with hand loads hover around 1/4” moa. Both my howa shot best with the action screws torqued to 50 in-lbs. maybe give that a try. Both of mine have been glass bedded, but I glass bed all my rifles anyways. Brother had an early model bergara HMR that did not shoot up to expectations. Some loads it shot good around .6-.7 moa, but most loads shot slightly over moa to 1/4” moa. You can get a lemon from every manufacturer is my main point. I would try a few things in the howa and if it doesn’t help then send it down the road and enjoy your bergara and be happy. I have shot several bergara that shot lights out, apparently my brother just got unlucky with his. Hope you get the howa figured out, or if not get it replaced with something better. Will say that hogue stock has a lot of flex, and it might be worthwhile to restock it also.

For hunting I prefer the Howa, I have 3 in various cal., never have failed I own one Bergara in 7mm-08. If you want a single shot this is your rifle. I have had a serious problem with it on ejection, it will not make it out of the ejection port on a empty round on ejection of spent case, never. Have contacted Bergara and they sent me a new ejection spring, same problem after installed. Accuracy, great, loves Federal 140 NBT. Touches same hole at a 100 yds. Would I take it hunting? nope not until the problem is fixed. Another problem with the Bergara is if you have big hands, it is a bear to load with such a small ejection port. Granted, I have become used to rifles with magazines. Howa is the same and much easier to load. Bergara needs stronger extraction and ejection springs, period. A design flaw to say the least.

Both very solid platforms I'd lean Bergara if choosing between the two that said I dont have either haha! Also I prefer single stage trigger and most mid to low end rifles I'd say swap out the trigger anyway. Good run through that each rifle has it place depending on the shooter. I will also add bolt run is a vastly over rated point that people cling too. Especially as I've felt rifles (as example the Tika I used to own) that had incredibly smooth bolt run while magazine is empty but completely different run when loaded. Loaded is what I am concerned about so empty bolt run kind of means bupkiss to me.

How so? It seems anyone says anything is better than a brand someone likes they say its bias.

@@Bullets4Bucks ok for starters you had your mind clearly made up way before you made the video you picked out the low grade begara for the wilderness series you should have at least got the terrain to keep the real life prices around the same point then you basically read us the howa website and cherry picked from your opinions and feelings to portray as solid facts I’m surprised you have not tested a savage axis vs a browning x bolt speed lr and told us witch one you like more

@@dfree159 lol... yeah I totally picked that bergara to compare because I am rich and bored like that lol... not even close bro. Everything I said is based on my experience and observations. I bought the wilderness ridge as my second bergara for the barreled action to use in a Woox Chassis actually. The Bergara hmr I previously had was a lemon. Stop being so bias in your opinion of my video
