BERGEN is located on the west coast of Norway and is surrounded by mountains thus known as "city of seven mountains", and fjords including Sognefjord which is country’s longest and deepest. As a UNESCO World Heritage City and a European City of Culture, the Bergen region has the ideal combination of nature, culture and exciting urban life all year round. Many of the extra-municipal suburbs are on islands and Bergen is the administrative center of Vestland county.
Even though Bergen is the second-largest city in Norway, it offers small town charm alongside a metropolitan character. The UNESCO World Heritage site Bryggen, a Hanseatic wharf, is a glorious remnant from when Bergen was a key center for trade between Norway and Europe.Today, the wharf houses a museum, shops, galleries, and restaurants, and is a focal point for both locals and visitors.
MOUNT FLØYEN is one of the seven mountains surrounding the city of Bergen and is a perfect spot for the sunset and panoramic view of Bergen and region. It has short and long hiking trails as well.
Fløibanen funicular is a steep railway and is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Norway. It is easily accessible right from the city center about 3 minutes’ walk from the Fish Market and about 5 minutes’ walk from the World Heritage Site Bryggen.
Our friend Julia gave us interesting information about Bergen and took us on a short hike from Fløyen to a nearby lake. She also made us aware about the flora and fauna of the surrounding area.
