Bering Antartica GTX jacket review

The Bering Antartica jacket is styled very much in the adventure aesthetic. The jacket sits a bit longer. You get large, lower, flap pockets, a ticket pocket on the front of the jacket, and another one on the sleeve. There's a large map pocket on the back. There's a strap to cinch the waist in; a strap that can also be adjusted higher or lower. You get nicely positioned vents at the side of the chest. You get vents on the forearms. And you get exhaust vents on the back. We do also quite like the popper arrangement that allows the chest vents to be held open. There are gusset zips on both sides at the hem to allow the jacket to splay a little on the bike.
The neck collar is adjustable. There are poppered straps to reduce the volume on the biceps. The sleeve ends fasten with zips and Velcro, to allow the cuffs of a glove to be worn inside the sleeve. This having been said, we're not massively impressed with how far the sleeve opens. There's a robust wind collar that attaches to the jacket with a zip.
The main zip that runs up the front of the jacket is not a waterproof one, but it is protected by a double storm flap, so rain is not going to get into the jacket this way. The zip by the way is a Magneto zip. You don't get a traditional slider with this zip, and that's good because that's the bit that is most easily damaged. Instead, the two halves of the zip fasten magnetically. It takes a little while to get used to but, once you have mastered it it's quick and easy. The storm flap also fastens with magnets. Not recommended if you wear a pacemaker!
For thermal protection, you get a pull-out, destination jacket that almost, but not quite, passes for a down jacket. It's filled with a hollow-form fibre of some description, so it will keep you warmish on the bike, and on the street. But don't get too excited. This is no 90% duck down Klim Maverick!
There's Level 1 armour in the elbows and shoulders. There's a pocket that will take a D3O protector. The jacket is rated A under EN17092. It also passes the EN13795 standard for visibility, but what's nice is that the silver reflective bands don't stand out against the tones of grey, so the effect is quite subtle.
There's a zip that allows you to attach the jacket to the pants. Now, actually, this is less important with a longer jacket, but some people will be glad to know that they can connect the two halves.

Another good and informative video. I truly wish I lived closer to this shop as I would DEFINITELY be shopping there. I'm not built like your average Japanese racing snake (ie fat lad) and have difficulty finding QUALITY gear that fits so tend not to order online unless it's gear I've used before! I truly believe these guys want to sell you what's best for you and not just what's best for their profit margins. Keep up the good work

I hear you and I'm sure your experience is a good one, in my experience waxed cotton is superior, mine is absolutely waterproof, warmer and dries out as you shake the water off it, cheaper and will in my experience of technical fabrics last a lot longer.

In our world, a waxed cotton jacket is not what we’d call a technical jacket. It is true that a waxed cotton combined with a membrane makes for a level of waterproofing that is a match for laminated, but waxed cotton jackets do not breathe because the wax blocks all the pores in the fabric, so you wouldn’t want to wear waxed cotton in hot weather. Plus, of course, waxed cotton jackets tend not to have any venting. So waxed cotton is fine in the cold and wet; not so much the warm and dry. CP.

I, too, would love to shop at Motolegends in person, but there's literally an ocean between us. So I order online & roll the dice on sizes. I recently emailed the staff asking about sizes and the person who answered was clearly so fearful of giving me wrong information that they wouldn't give me enough information to make a decision. It's difficult to impossible (ridiculously expensive) to return an item through DHL, FedEx, or UPS from the the US to the UK, so I do try very hard to make the right size decision. I end up giving away items that don't fit.

gor Tex’s copyright on the semi permeable membrane looks like BS to me. Anyone who makes a similar fabric is sued even if it’s completely different material For that reason I won’t support them

It seems to me that a company has a right to protect its intellectual property. You don’t make it clear why you think to do so is bullshit. But all that’s above my pay grade. All I can say is that Gore make the best membranes, and that they are the only people to do laminates properly. But most importantly they are the only brand to offer a lifetime warranty that gear using their membranes won’t leak. And to me that’s the opposite of bullshit. That’s putting your money where your mouth is! CP.

@@Motolegends Specifically copyrighting a natural phenomenon like osmosis and sueing companies that design semi permeable materials seem wild to me. Did y’all miss the Fortnine video on exactly this topic? Guess so
@Motolegends

@@danboyd6180 No, didn’t miss it, but he didn’t seem to understand a lot of the technical stuff. I think he thought that he was saying something new, but there was nothing revelatory to anybody who understands membranes. I think Fortnine’s videos have becoming more about shocking people, and creating headlines. The substance of what he imparts seems to be less important these days. I had wondered whether you were coming at this from a point of knowledge and experience, or whether you were just trotting out what was in that video. I now know the answer. I suppose the truth is that you shouldn’t believe everything you come across on the internet. The fact is that Gore offers something that no membrane manufacturer comes close to replicating. If you want to stay dry, and want to do so for a long time, then you go Gore. When you are successful there will always be somebody who wants to tear you down. But usually it’s nothing more than tittle-tattle. CP
