Thanks. In Australia I'm riding a lot of dusty gravel roads with other bikes kicking up the dust. The peak is very important. Not to keep the sun out of my eyes but to cast a shadow across the dusty visor so I can see better.

Similar with a winter commute in the UK, except it's dirty wet road spray and the low sun! A drop down visor won't help as the contrast has gone when the light hits the dirt and diffracts.

As a former paramedic, I can't stress enough how important it is to have easy access to the patient. Especially for the first people on the scene who may only have rudimentary medical knowledge. That's why I agree 100 percent that a flip-up helmet can save your life. Thank you for this excellent video. Drive safely.

"Chap in a Cap", absolutely brilliant analysis and worthy of a PhD award in the subject. However, somewhat surprisingly, you forgot to identify another very compelling reason for a flip which is that when you stop to engage with the locals for some local knowledge re hotels/petrol stations or whatever, or when you are dealing with Police /border officials, a flip allows them to engage with a human face instead of a scary looking Star Wars Stormtrooper, and speaking from my own experience as a RTW rider, that incredibly significant physiological advantage cannot be understated. You can't smile your way out of a tricky situation in a full face because nobody can see the smile. Perfect example, Ed Marsh who could charm his way out of a firing squad because he always spoke to the officials with his lid open.

I do own both types, and they have their respective strengths. Can you wear goggles with a flip? If you wear glasses, flip helmets can go on and off with your glasses in situ. Sometimes the visor actually stabilises the buffeting, like fins. Wear good ear protection, alpine or similar, every ride. Slow speeds, flips give more air. Drop your helmet and the peak often saves your visor from damage. Own both, and you will always be wearing the wrong one and the wrong time!

Sunset in the Serengeti lasts about 4 minutes. Sunset in northern Scotland, or Norway, lasts eight hours and is very low in the sky. Daylight in winter is less than eight hours in the whole day, amd skims the horizon. The peak is useful up north. If the sun actually shines.
@uncleroach3 ай бұрын
I find peak way more useful on high sun situation. Airoh Commander for example doesn't have peak big enough for sunsets. However it is way better for midday sun as it creates a bit of shade on your face. It is quite bad in side-winds especially with MX style chin.

Since I got my first flip-up helmet around 1985 I have never thought about buying anything else. I agree with almost everything you said in your excellent video - with one exception. The foil against low sun should be applied at the sun visor, not the outer visor. The sun visor is a common feature in flip-up helmets and can be lowered within a second to protect your eyes and enhance your security. This way, your view will not be permanently obstructed.

100% agree. I have a KTM 1190 Adventure R and a 690R and do a lot of adventure (4mth trips) and off road. I use a Schuberth C3 Pro because it’s very quiet, has a drop down sun visor, and the flip lid is easier for me as I wear glasses. Brilliant helmet

I guess, what has been said in the video is true, but the whole story just describes half of the picture: 1. Flip lids according to 22.06 are ridiculously heavy - L-sized Neotec3 in nearly 2kg, XL-sized is well above 2kg... That's insane! Riding with the chin bar up you just put the additional weight on top which makes the weight much more tangible and uncomfortable. Actually, what you do is just avoid riding like this. 2. Open chin bar prevents air getting inside a top vent so while you put some more air over your face, the top of the head gets sweaty, again - riding with the chin bar open is just a tradeoff not an extra gem 3. Noise - while fliplids can be quieter... add earplugs and there is no difference whether you have a fliplid or anything else 4. Fliplids tend to have the strap moved a bit backwards comparing to full face helmets - may be uncomfortable for some of us, depending on neck shape 5. ADV helmets have much bigger visor aperture. I like that! 6. Much more air to breath with in ADV helmet and (most often) better ventilation helps keep the whole head cooler 7. Yes, you can open a fliplid in case of an accident, but there are (on some ADVs) a quick releases which address the problem how to get the helmet off swiftly 8. Peaks do a great job if you ride 8 hours in the full sun - just minimize how much UV gets inside shading your face from sunlight. Actually you feel much cooler on the face So I guess, it's what someone likes better. It would be fair to say that there is as much advantages of a fliplid as disadvantages when compared to ADVs. Personally, if my trip is mainly about on/off or with lower speeds (avoiding fast transfers) than I take an ADV (yes, air drag can be a pain in high speeds). If there is much more motorway riding involved - I leave ADV at home and... I take a fullface because of less (lot less) weight - my NXR2 lets me save 0,6kg over a Neotec3 and it does far more better job at speeds aerodynamically than a Neotec3... and the lack of sunshield does not bother me since I added a transition to the NXR2. So, my take on this subject - ADV or a light fullface :)

Been using our LS2 Valiant II both on our VFR 800 as well as Tiger 800. Why we chose this particular helmet is that the chin bar goes back 180* almost all the way to the back, and not just halfway like many other modular helmets, which causes some backwards drag when open. And when coming off a freeway into a town like setting is awesome, changing from a full face to an open face helmet. Greetings from South Africa.

I’m in Australia and tend to ride a lot of gravel roads, forestry and other tracks rather than a lot of bitumen. Some day tides, plenty of weekends with O/N camping and occasional week-long trips generally well off the bitumen. Rode my F650GS for years with a Shoei Neotec with a narrow sunvisor inserted between the helmet and liner and really enjoyed it. Recently replaced that with a Schuberth with flip front, drop down visor and a peak. Happy with it so far. No real buffeting but I’m short and my bike has a fairly high screen and I don’t ride all that fast when standing. The other upside of a flip front is that it’s so much easier when you wear glasses.

I always respect your opinion and experience. Your videos are welll grounded and explained. I think one aspect you might have overlooked with peak helmet design is their background in motocross and hot environments. The increased air flow does increase noise but in hot environments the cooling effect can defeat noise and buffeting concerns especially in off road conditions. As with all things we must live in compromise, so how we ride dictates our selections. Thanks again for another great video!

I agree wholeheartedly. I’ve tried a few helmets over the years. Been riding adventure bikes since the nineties. My latest helmet purchase is the Nolan 120-1. Chin guard goes over to rear enabling me to ride open face in the hotter weather, but back to full face for higher speeds.

I agree, it's an excellent technique. I use it when riding around my local parks on sunny days, remember them! The overhanging branches will cause the dappled sunlight effect on the road, so you will go from light to dark in an instant, and you simply don't know how long it will last. By looking down slightly, you can bring the sun visor into play. It's also useful for when the sun starts to sit lower in the sky as we approach autumn and winter. 👍
@JEmmertz4 ай бұрын
I really love the conclusions you have here! 👍 You might not like the extra weight that comes with a flip-up, but all other aspects of it will be very handy for many many riders.

One of the reasons I like and prefer any flip-lid is from the discussions I have had with local motorcycle police. I live nearby the local Police station and many/most riders fill up with gas at a station even closer to me, and I do have occasional talks with them. Very soon you get to find out why they use certain gear - and a motorcycle police is never a random rider with no real clue or connection to the circumstances of reality. There's a serious reason to anything they wear. (And they can tell some really eye-opening stories on what they have seen and experienced on the roads also.)

Thanks Motolegends, I lrearned a few good things from this vid - well done. One aspect I was waiting to hear about, but was NOT mentioned, was strength and safety. I'm no expert with stats or industry knowledge here, however it seems to me obvious that a full face quality road helmet (i.e. Shoei ot Arai) would be a much safer prospect if, in a fall, I am skimming across the ground and heading for a pole or gutter impact. Conversely, I think I'd MUCH rather have a full face if I fall off in traffic and any number of cars or busses are looking to use my helmet for traction.

You should say at the beginning that this video is for 'wanna be adventure riders who stay on tarmac with their brand new GS's'. If you go for some green lanes with flip-up helmet you will realise very quickly that you don't have enough fresh air to breath. You will get sweat after a couple of minutes. Your pinlock will not work because of the amount of moisture. You will basically boil your head in it. I don't care that much about the peak but the protruding chin that adv helmet offers is a must and a lifesaver for a proper adventure rider.

I live in north Australia, and it’s mostly hot or bloody hot. I also come from the days when most riders used open face helmets, and to this day I really enjoy wearing an old fashioned open face with a small peak (helps reduce sunburn on the face). Right now I’m needing a new lid, it’s down to an mx or a modular helmet. And tbh I think the modular lid just makes sense, especially at highway speeds.
@AlexOnABoat3 ай бұрын
There are two very important use cases where a peak beats a drop down visor, green-laning and urban riding. Seemingly total opposites but both offering the same conditions - rapid switching from sunlight to shade at a time when you don't want to have a hand off the bars. In both cases the lack of speed means noise and turbulence aren't an issue and in both cases, a tint whether from a drop down visor or sunglasses renders the shaded areas pitch black.

I am old enough to remember when only the Old Bill and people who could afford BMW system 1 helmets were in flip lids. As a glasses wearer though, I always thought they were a good idea. Nolan bought out the first reasonable quality but affordable flip helmet, the N100 if I remember correctly, in the late 90s. I bought one back then and I have always had a flip lid ever since. I currently have the latest generation Nolan, but may well treat myself to a Shoei next year.

I tried the Shoei but didnt find any relevant advantage against my Nolan N100-5 Plus. Where i did feel a slight difference was with the HJC RPHA 90s Carbon or 91 Carbon. The 2-300g difference is alightly noticeable which might help for very long trips. However the N100-5 has a funny trick where the top air vent is designed to create lift so in practice it actually feels ligbter than it is in a regular upright position on my 1250 Bandit or 1290 SuperAdventure

That’s why the new arai peak is easy to remove for highway routes and easy to install back when you hit the dirt/gravel. Dusty visor and sun glare is a bad combo together. There’s always a compromise in one or another when you do adventure riding.

Just recently I learned that modern flip helmets have progressed quite a bit; I agree with these conclusions here. It used to be that flip helmets were believed to be heavier, louder, less safe in a crash (Not sure if those things were true, but I believed them). I still believed that up to last year when I bought the GTAir, then it ended up being louder than my old neotec. I didn't even question this before the purchase. I subsequently learned that the locking mechanisms are much better now, the helmets do not have a large weight penalty anymore; in nearly all things that I wanted, the flip helmet was better.

I have the v5 Arai that you had on the table (or is it 4? whatever, same helmet - same color, love it). I had a flip before. I was sure that a the Arai peaked helmet would give me greater visibility, i.e. more peripheral, more top and bottom, and unless I'm kidding myself I do believe that to be the case, so that's my 2 cents. AND living in the southwest US, I have MANY times now been REALLY happy for the adjustable peak on the Arai, at 7,000 ft and up to 12,000, my normal riding altitudes, that dang sun is BRIGHT and annoying, the peak has been great, and much loved over the flip up. I use both a flip and a full face. I use the flip 80% of the time for the reasons you make here. Where I do take a slight issue is where you state emergency services can flip the helmet safely in case of an accident. Very, very few paramedics will know it's a flip lid, mainly because as you state at the beginning, when closed, they just look like a standard full face. If a rider is dazed or unconscious, they can not inform a responder accordingly. Worse, flip lids can be a pain finding - and operating - the damm release lever! Different manufacturers put them in different areas.

I don't agree with its just a fashion accessory statement: I wear an Arai XD4 for touring (including a 5000 mile trip around Europe this year). 1. Great field of view 2. No need for yet another piece of plastic to look through 3. Much better ventilation than a flip lid (apart from low speed). I do have a very short screen on my bike and most helmets, including peaked work best in clean air.

Tbh, as you pointed out, I don't need a peak on my helmet to go adventure riding. Simply put, I don't see significant benefits in having one. That said, as someone who wears prescription glasses, I do require my helmet to have a really good ventilation. When working hard on trails, normal helmets simply fog up. I'm currently on GT air 2, but it simply isn't good enough on trails. I guess flip up would help, but I would have to leave it open all the time, which isn't ideal.

A downside to flip up helmet that I don’t think was mentioned is that they are typically heavier than non flip helmets. Heavier helmet will strain your neck more. The peak also keeps the sun from penetrating through the visor during the afternoon, not just at dusk/dawn and that really helps with keeping your head and face cool. Even with a tinted visor the sun will still penetrate and the inside or your helmet gets warm- the peak helps with this. Discovered this riding hours in central Texas during the summer and am telling you the peak helps tremendously in this regard. Otherwise great vid, but I’m not giving up my XD4 anytime soon.

When you move your head about at speed, a peak acts as a sail or an aerofoil! One thing Chris didn't mention, is that a flip-lip also makes it easier to talk and to hear other people, because you have the ability to flip the front of the helmet up. The best flip-lid in my opinion would be the Shoei Neotec. I bit the bullet and bought one after wasting hundreds on helmets that, for one reason or another, I simply don't wear any more. The Neotec is expensive, but it's extremely comfortable, it's very quiet, and in the long run it's money well spent, because it's the only helmet you need for everyday road riding. I managed to pick up the Respect TC-10 in a sale, but if you want to save some cash, and from a safety point of view, the plain white one would be the sensible choice.

Does Apple Face ID work with the flip-up helmets like Neotec? I doesn't work with full-face ones

Except. It’s heavier than a gold bar.

@@armandoloureiro7158 I've got a Scorpion Exo-1400 Air Carbon full-face as well, it's a great helmet, but I still prefer the Shoei Neotec.

@@rpicinato I use Android, and I can unlock my phone using face ID wearing my Shoei Neotec 2. I think it works by measuring a series of facial points, like the corners of your mouth, your eyes, and your nose, etc. If there's a microphone in the way of your mouth, then face ID won't work, you'll have to move the mic to the side.

Would you recommend a premium flip up helmet even for street/naked bikes which are also used for commuting in warm areas?

Love my Agv tour modular , tried the shoe but just didn’t feel right for me.

I think you are missing very important point on helmet bic, it is not only for shielding from sun, as well protect the goggles from branches, but most importantly for adventure bikes gives the correct airflow, it cuts through the air , makes huge difference for head to stay straight, otherwise when you ride without bic your head moves side to side , like you underwater. It's is very important for aerodynamics when you keep your head up straight facing

The best part is being able to flip the bar up when huffing and puffing to drag a bike out of a mud hole.
@dominichayes98084 ай бұрын
No, a strip at the top of the visor will not do the same job as a peak to block the effects of the sun. A peak will shade a portion of the visor, preventing all the micro scratches from being lit up by direct sunlight, which is very hard to see through. A hand would do the same job, but I prefer to keep those on the bars. Plus, flips and sun visors add weight. That said, I prefer a helmet with a flip, but I often find it covered in dust at just the wrong time! 😂

I would love to wear a flip-up (aka "modular") helmet but I have a very round, very large bean and the only helmet I've ever found that fits is my Arai Quantum-X 2XL (full face). At least it fits well!

Get a PFS fit on a Shoei. Unless you make part-time appearances at the circus, it should work fine. CP

I never ever considered getting a flip before, simply because I remember my dad made one or two remarks on BMW riders and their silly flips.

I agree in a few things, but disagree on some key ones. First of all I don't like the statement about "true adventure motorcyclist" as it sounds a bit like gatekeeping, everyone has different kinds of adventure. In my opinion, a "true adv rider" would definetly go off road a lot, in which case a flip-lid is terrible because of the added weight, lack of peak and compatibility with gogles so I think it's more adecuate for road use only so it would land on the touring side more than adv. And then, the main benefit of the flip-lid, the ability to ride with it opened up, is to me a big con, since I wouldn't want a hit in my face even at 15 mph. Also the silent claim is true like Chris said for a quality helmet, for something like a neotec or a shuberth, but most flip-lids are way noisier than a full face because of the shapes and the gaps inherent to the opening mechanism. Also, there's the ones that have the 180 degree chin bar which I wouldn't recommend at all. I know of a guy who got rear ended on a traffic light and the chin bar broke his neck on the hit and got him paraplegic so yeah, scary af. Honestly if you want a flip-lid go for the neotec3 or the c5...

Nolan N70-2X is a great multi purpose 'adventure' helmet.
@pepcooper4 ай бұрын
@@roadwarrior8560 Never tried it on the bike, but I had it in my hands and like most Nolans the build quality doesn' seem 100% spot on to me. But although I'm not a fan of detachable chin protection, the concept on this one is interesting. I think they are one or two updates/revisions away of being a brilliant product.

To me adventure means off road , there isn’t a flip helmet made with enough field of view or ventilation to match the tour x . I’ve got an e1 which isn’t bad , but like the laminate suit you will boil wearing that off road . Yes i would love a tour x or similar with a flip front but its not made

Do you think first responders (non bikers) know about how to remove them? Will they do more damage trying to remove modular helmets. I wear one but never thought about that before.
@WDXash4 ай бұрын
Yes, they’re taught about them.
@Aquadug4 ай бұрын
Did a first-aid course aimed at motorcycle drivers, held by a former military medic, current ambulance driver. 9/10 times he adviced it's better to do something i.e remove helmer than wait for first responders. He adviced to always try and remove the helmet, only exemption where if there were holes in the helmet. Can be skull fractures, and the helmet is holding the skull together. As a first responder he definitely preffered modular helmets, secondly modern helmets with pulltabs.

A flip lid is useless off road if you are following other riders and its dusty. You cant breath and when you open the visor your eyes are inundated with dust. You need goggles. It really depends on the type of riding you do.

Think I might have suggested that I was talking about adventure riders who ride mostly on road! CP
@SpaceCitizenFaye4 ай бұрын
Was thinking the same thing. No way I would flip that up adventuring the way I do, and flipped down there would be too much dust to breath. I actually did some adv like that in my Shoei RF1400 and it was miserable. I'm more interested in an Adv helmet for it's ease of use with goggles and much bigger air scoop on the front. But I guess ADV for some of these old farts just means TOURING.
@sveinharang66394 ай бұрын
@@Motolegends I belive you made good arguments towards what I used to call "Touring", and the of these nowadays ride GS's not FJR's and VFR's. Hence the desire to look the part. I try quite hard to get both muddy, sandy and build a sweat, but there is usually some tarmac done before I get to the fun stuff.
