In this Dean's Speaker Series (www.haas.org/deansspeakers), Thomas Philippon discusses his much-anticipated new book, The Great Reversal: How America Gave Up on Free Markets, and the decline of competition in the United States.
Using both the art of powerful storytelling and data from his cutting-edge research, Thomas shares his findings that American markets, once the most competitive in the world, are increasingly rigged for the benefit of the biggest corporations.
Thomas has been a visiting professor at Yale, Princeton, and the Paris School of Economics and was named one of the top 25 economists under 45 by the IMF.

Great show ! Thomas should be more famous in France and I guess the release of its book (2 years after…) will contribute to develop those topics .. any synergies with prof Scott G.. also from NYU ? Let’s do a tv show in France Thomas … the economic level is super low in the overall population.. how ironic when you think of all the French economic teachers in USA !!

Agree with most of his points, except anti-trust enforcement. In theory it sounds simple - ban a monopoly/oligopoly. But such situations of market imbalances either stay that way because profit margins are too low and nobody else is going to bother investing and gain it from the monopoly entity, or the monopoly has gotten approval from regulators to impose restrictions for new players to enter the market, like required licenses, etc. In most cases, monopolies go away as competition emerges to take the above-average profit margins. And that is great from a customer's point of view, as they get lower prices in return.
