Awesome!! Thanks Ken!! Been watching all your stuff since Covid and this is definitely one of the most useful videos as there's not much out there for piano for live sound. Thank you!!

This was very practical. I have never had to mic a grand piano, but the examples here demonstrate a nice range of solutions.

I oftes see music engineers, mic the piano with two dynamic cardioid in the two holes of the piano. I don't really like the sound that way, so I was looking for another solution with those two mics.

I don't think live sound engineers have the same kind of ears as the rest of the world. They like sticking mics in holes for some reason, including cajons and violins. I try to position mics in a way that pics up the whole instrument, so it sounds more like that instrument according to how the audience would hear it, instead of just a dark, boomy hole.

nice tips! I wouldn't survive the night if I got within 10 feet of a grand piano with a roll of duct tape, though...!

My problem is, that most of the pianists in jazz and classical music insist on the open lid.

I often mic the sound board if I can't get a mic in a good place on top. It's especially good for upright piano.
