No it doesn’t not really! He’s a working musician and a dirty old man ! And who wouldn’t be? It’s a lonely life on the road….. Whether or not under-grads can “make the grade” musically to suit an ego of this guys enormity, they have “the goods”’in another way! I met Mcglogjlin back stage when I was 21 and my cousin 22, the only reason we were entertained was cos of our 20 year old girlfriends incredible beauty. She tried to talk to him about her violin and he just tried to get in her pants! He then begrudged to talk to us and I said “I notice you still have very self consciously ‘spiritual’ or ‘turban-envy’ titles to your songs but after I lived in India for months and months as a teenager and had life defining experiences there I’ve become a bit cynical about any Idea the culture there is any more or less tuned-than anywhere” He butted in “Well if you’re cynical then I am SORRY for you!!!!” My eyes pricked with utterly shocked tears and my cousin “squared-on” to our (prior to the encounter”) musical hero, saying “that’s a bit MACH!” ( he sounded normal til the last word came out ‘cockney’ (London street accent) I knew if Mr Guitar had forgotten his manners one more time his lip and nose would nave been all over his face!” I said to my cousin “let’s go” we said to our girlfriend what are you doing?” She said (with “Get me away from THIS CREEP!” eyes) “yes, me too”. Remember “everyone” every little tin god nearly always has his feet, like the rest of us, made of clay x x x

These students, who were graduating from Berklee, were given the wonderful opportunity to play music with a seasoned musical veteran. John McLaughlin is the perfect example of an artist who has stayed in constant exploration mode throughout his long and illustrious career. I liked the whole performance a lot. What I find kind of amusing is what happens at 14:40 where McLaughlin bends that "off" note and the pianist rushes to widen his harmony and suddenly it sounds inside again.That's also the point where the bass player apparently loves it the most. Magic of a live jazz performance.

Andreas Devig Very nice observation. It's a very nice counterpoint adjustment, in which the rhythm and melody section are in some interesting form complimentary to one another, the bass creates tension and the piano resolves the tension.

I'd be interested in your "quite extraordinary stuffs". I HAVE been listening to Indian classical music since 1970 or so, here in America it was difficult to get ANYTHING except for Ravi Shankar & Ali Akbar Khan when LP's (those round black 12" things) were all you could get. I sure have a lot of them... The last 15 years or so it's opened up, so I do know about Kartik Seshadri, Indrajit Banerjee etc. My current faves would be Kala Ramnath, Anoushka and Debashish Bhattacharya (yes, I play guitar & Steel guitar, fo-ever too). But I don't know much about flute players and vocalists, and I SURE can't afford to buy 10 cd's to get 2 great ones, which is about the average. So any recommendations would be great! I tend to like the spooky dark stuff, NOT the fluffy intentionally-always-happy music (Which DOES kinda rule out Ravi's music until he got his mind out of hock to that "Ambassador of Indian Music" crap and began PLAYING again in the '80's (he's said so himself) Thanks.
@abrarjahinnafi16347 жыл бұрын
That vocal thing she did is called ALAP. And the flute intro is pure Indian. You're welcome. It's neither jazz nor Indian Classical,i it's kind of a fusion. John has been doing it for quite a while.
@salinger20007 жыл бұрын
of course, it's fusion. Quite all contemporary western music is "fusion" and McLaughlin did "jazz fusion" since early 1970. Also the Shakti project is fusion. Here we can listen Bansuri, a bit of raga, jazz, electric guitar, some electronics......

In a World where materialism has virtually drowned human spirituality and the simple endeavour for Truth in Art, this short piece by these young musicians, guided by the Grand Master John Mc Laughlin has renewed not only my energies and optimism for the future of Jazz, but has vitiated the entire genre of Music.

Totally agree. Do note that 'vitiate' means "spoil or impair the quality or efficiency of". But you meant invigorated, vitalized, inspired, animated, potentiated, enabled, potentiated etc. And yeah pretty amazing vitality and joy in the present for a man his age too.
@anthonywilliams67647 жыл бұрын
Apologies Jeff, How right you are, I had not read my comment until you pointed it out, and of course I made a typo, the word should have read "invitiate" meaning purified, this was meant to be a reference to the lowering of technical abilities, and acceptance of lower standards brought about in composition today by the mundane, and the concomitant search to " purify the waters" so to speak. Thanks for pointing that out.

McLaughlin plays as if Miles Davis is directing him from behind the curtain. Look as the space between the notes, block phrasing and playing octaves, timing perfect. it's all there. So then he stands back and directs the flautist.Her unique tone and ambience, dragging the beat and singing like an alternative version of Ella. To sum it up although the fire in his playing has smoldered into quiet fire it still hits it's mark as it always has.
@jimmullin19437 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your insight, never knew it had a negative connotation. I play alto sax and love to mix it up with band mates by playing a little ahead or behind the beat. It keeps them on their toes so to speak. Are you a musician?

These young players are obviously talented. Here comes the "but".....Apart from the flautist, McLaughin's choices are all unique and brilliant, while the young musicians make far less beautiful rhythmic, melodic, and harmonic choices. The vast difference between a genius and an amateur player.

Replying to many comments here: JM has had a long storied and fascinating life in music. He has changed over the decades yet remains still true to himself. Its not the speed though he's certainly slowed just abit, the hands dont fly as they used to when in his 20s 30s. Its not the 'sound' of his guitar which these days is rarely changing and fairly clean, save for the f/x. Its not the quik stabs and as one put it "the disjointed chords'. and it's definitely NOT about how the listeners think he should play and sound. IT IS him and he alone who chooses how he plays and what it sounds like. I cant believe the selfishness of some commenting here about the above things. As if a musician needs their approval or has to conform to play and sound how others want them to. You dont have to like it, no one is twisting your arms and ears to listen. But do not denigrate someone because of that. Musicians evolve constantly. I would love to see all you detractors commenting say these things directly to him and then watch you be taken aback by how he reacts to all this. You would very surprised. So much of what JM has done over the decades comes out in his playing these days. It such a joy to be quickly, fleetingly taken down memory lane by a sudden quick arpeggio or chordal comp that has its roots in the old days. JM loves his sounds, loves the way he plays, because its from his heart and soul and thats one thing that will never change..

That are wise words here and I fully agree with that.

Perfectly put. JM has earned the right to do what he likes; if you dont like it,so what? Miles did exactly the same in his later years and ,in the main,I didnt like his stuff. So what ? He earned the right to map out his own musical destiny.
