If you repeat again and again "This is European interest", and you overoptimize it to your own interest, while not taking into consideration the interest of influential others, you just don't get a deal. If France was more competent, and looked into solutions that also benefit the others, they would get more out of this actually, because the default is: Maximalist French position: No deal, they get nothing. Position that is mutually beneficial: Deal, they at least get that. So France is a diplomatic lame duck on these matters in the EU, because they act like they were the ones in charge, only to repeatedly notice they actually aren't, others don't just do something because France says it is good. Then the French get upset about this. Then repeat. And this has continued for many many years.

Presidents speaking foreign languages is not something new. President Putin speaks German when he is in Germany for instance. Giorgia Meloni speaks four languages and will use them during state visits.
