This was different from their typical songs. More like a ballad. They were a new wave/punk band with more upbeat songs. However, this was one of their biggest hits, made for a movie, Top Gun.

"Take My Breath Away" was the theme song for the first Top Gun movie back in 1986. Pop radio was all over the song that year. I went to college near the naval air station portrayed in that film. So the local radio gave us a double dose of the song and more. Terri Nunn can really hit those high notes. I saw Berlin open for Roxy Music in 1982 when their hits were "The Metro" and "Sex (I'm A...)", songs that epitomized the new wave style of the early eighties. I moved on from them as they changed their style to sound more pop. But this is an eighties classic.

***BERLIN TRIVIA TIME!!!*** ...Only ONE Man, can be the "Top Gun"... Oh, this One is SO EXCITING!! ...I KNEW Empress would flip when she heard the Intro! (0:58) ...this is a HUGE Classic, with a LOOOOOOOONG backstory..... Terri Nunn was a Teen actress from the 70's (she was a co-star in Donna Summer 's 1978 flick, "Thank God It's Friday"), then, she created a dark, edgy New Wave group called Berlin in 1982, that had a VERY controversial Club hit called, "Sex (I'm A..)", which was One of the first New Wave tunes that broke onto Pop Radio, from the Dance Clubs.... ...they had a few hits, and started to peter out; THEN they were asked to do a track for the flick, "Top Gun", when they where at their WORST, creatively...Martha Davis (The Motels) was to do the tune, but it didn't have what Empress noticed EXACTLY (1:34).... the 'growl'.....so, in came Terri...and, ONLY Terri.... ...Giorgio Moroder (Donna's main Man) produced the tune, and, there was D-R-A-M-A! ...NONE of the Band members were asked to do the tune, ONLY Terri, and were MAD! ...Terri thought this would 'help' the Group...they broke up, BECAUSE of it!! ...they had 1 more Album (1986's "Count 3 And Pray") and, ended it...Giorgio STILL says it's his favorite tune he Produced (the Man, who produced DONNA SUMMER), and Berlin still tours (with hired session players)....

I’ve seen them about 6 times and saw them months ago. They still sound great. Particularly Terri. I’m surprised you didn’t mention that Terri had auditioned for the role of Princess Leia in the original Star Wars film.

@@EmpressReacts ...yep....Giorgio rarely worked by himself, so he had 1 writer fix a line ('...and turned to hear you say, I am unafraid...'), but, THIS tune, was all him....P.S., Terri DIDN'T split the 'bag'.....

Originally, the producers asked the band The Motels to sing this... (their version is on KZbin), but then decided to go with Berlin's rendition. It won the Oscar for best original song 1986. Interesting that Madonna's "Live To Tell" (which was for the film At Close Range but not eligible for an award due to some rule), was released the same year. That should've been Madonna's Oscar 🤣🤣

Nice one Empress! Fun fact: this song was originally offered to Martha Davis/The Motels and there’s a demo with Martha’s vocals on it. Even though I’m a a bigger fan of The Motels than Berlin, Terri Nunn really killed it on this track.

I actually used to get Berlin and The Motels confused when I was a kid in the 1980s. Turns out they were kinda part of the same little LA scene, so it made more sense than I knew. This definitely helped revive Berlin's fortunes in the second half of the 1980s. Martha Davis was probably not wise to turn down this track. Especially since Giorgio Moroder was a well-established and hugely respected producer and hitmaker.

@@MRoyClark I think Martha was happy to do it, she did the demo and it was sent to the Top Gun director… he rejected it and then after that Berlin got it. That’s the story I think I read anyway.

@@franko6677 Oh, double wow, then. Yeah. Martha was a bigger commercial proposition with two solid US Top10s by The Motels ("Suddenly Last Summer", "Only the Lonely"). Berlin had only cracked the US Top30 with "No More Words". Berlin's sound owed a lot more to Giorgio Moroder, though. That is a good fit. Their early hit "Sex (I'm a...)" is almost a tribute to the Giorgio Moroder sound.
