Great video. Dabbled with random/generative stuff over the years in Ableton and always been disappointed that stuff ends up not being 'hooky' enough and sort of giving up, It never occurred to me to use Looper like that to fix that problem. Genius.

One simple mod - on the looper device, click the "reverse" button. ;)
@jmcqmusic Жыл бұрын
That's a good one, I was experimenting with that but couldn't figure out a way to randomize it. Now I'm using the Splendosa plugin in the high voice as it's got a reverse option that can be turned on or off at the clip envelope level. A little reverse goes a long way. Also trying a Harmonic minor scale in the high voice. Next thing is creating a 'sparse' scene and a 'dense' scene that can be launched for a buildup or for the intro or outro. @@synthseeker

Generative music meets Berlin School style... scratches two itches at the same time 😁 I like it! Could also make a great seed for new ideas (let it run and record the generated midi, rip the especially pleasing parts out and process them manually)...

This sounds fantastic and right up my alley in terms of ambient and evolving. I've only just got Live 11 Intro, is this technique possible in that version?
@synthseeker Жыл бұрын
I don’t know but it’s easy to check, create a midi clip and in its inspector look for the follow actions button. If you can activate it then yes, it will work! I think it will, but I don’t have live intro.
@alm5966 Жыл бұрын
@@synthseekerI checked it out and it will work in Intro just fine. There are follow actions and Intro has Looper so all is good to go! That's a great tutorial and just the sort of thing I've been looking for. Thanks!

This sounds absolutely amazing. I wish i could understand the technique (but it's not your fault!). I am working with (old) Logic 9 Pro and i fear that this DAW anyway doesn't offer such looper tools. But you inspired me to get more in detail with some functions like the arpeggiator. There is so much to discover!

Could possibly get ableton live lite for free and switch between the two DAWs until you get up to speed with ableton. That's what I'm doing anyway. Seems like Live is really good for automation.
@ulfschoneberg645211 ай бұрын
Thanks again for that nice and helpful lecture! I had an issue with my freshly bought live 11 intro version, apparently the glue compressor is not part of the packet. There is most probable a far better way to address that problem, but I just deleted the xml-block mentioning the compressor from the als-file, then ableton stopped complaining.
@synthseeker11 ай бұрын
Thanks! Does the set open but complains or does it refuse to open using Live Intro?

@synthseeker11 ай бұрын
@ulfschoneberg6452 if you can see the devices on each track, try to find where the placeholder for the glue compressor is and select/delete it. That may stop the complaints. I apologize I do not have a “lite/intro” version of live to test with. :(

I think you should definitely consider using a form of this to create a project track, that you could then tweak the final music into an additional track for the new album Luke. With enough change and variety it would be an awesome long ambient moment. I could imagine it as a final track to play-out the album... :) As a fellow geek, can Ableton also have a series of clips that only contain different speech samples - and trigger them in a similar way?

Hi Luke, will this work on Live Lite? Just beginning to learn Ableton after many years of Audacity.
@synthseeker8 ай бұрын
I'm not sure about "lite" - there are three official tiers of live (intro, standard and suite) and the "lite" edition is a weird offshoot that comes included with a lot of hardware partners. The comparison between the three tiers (found here: www.ableton.com/en/live/compare-editions/) DOES say that all editions have the looper device (which you need for this technique)...but I'm not sure about "lite". You'll need to check the manual for two things: follow actions and the looper device. :)
@Xanaduum8 ай бұрын
@@synthseeker will try it out, it might have to spring for the into version soon, this feature would be really useful.
@Xanaduum8 ай бұрын
so it does work in Lite if you load the file, however it doesn't allow you to save changes, so good for practice. @@synthseeker

How does the LOOPER ignore the Random device?
@synthseeker Жыл бұрын
The row of devices is like a pipeline, because the looper comes after the random device, during recording it records randomized output, but on playback - because the looper is downstream - it just plays back what it recorded, unaffected by the random. :) If you use live 11, you can download and take apart the set (link in the description.)

@@synthseeker Cool, thank you for the answer. I'm a Live "baby" - week 2 of use, coming from Bitwig I still find Live quite confusing.

@@synthseeker I dare say Bitwig is amazing when it comes for unlimited modulators built into every device, plus the 2 grid environments are killers! Live feels so dated... Not a change, but I need to work on a few projects based on Live and Push 3, hence the fast, deep dive.
