A quarter strength pro mist filter does not do Cinestill 800T any justice! I am so grateful you recognised the great qualities of Cinestill 800T and how the filter detracts from its unique characteristics. Your Xpan, Cinestill 800T and Berlin combo was outstanding.
@KarinMajoka3 жыл бұрын
Honestly I think it’s very subjective. And as I said I like that the edges of the halations appear softer with the filter, but sadly the red is also not as intensive which takes away a bit of the typical look. I think it all depends on the subject: the shot of Potsdamer Platz works great with the filter on imo, on others the more extreme Cinestill look might have been a better choice :)

Congratulations, you’ve unlocked the “out of gas” achievement, for finishing a roll of Cinestill without making a photograph of a gas station 😆. Great video Karin! And the video itself is “actually” cinematic, very well done. And also lovely little project for a night out photographing the city.

Great video. Can you tell a bit about how you meter for these shots? I really like the exposure on you shots! I know you tell a little bit about your method in the video. But the shot if the parking lot lights I see you walking towards the lights with a meter in hand..
@KarinMajoka3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I can elaborate a bit. I did not want to make it too complicated in the video, but maybe I might make a dedicated „how to meter at night“ video one day. How I meter depends a lot of the subjects I meter for. But in this video 95% of the time I used a lightmeter app on my phone, where I meter for the brightest and the darkest areas and calculate an average, since those apps use reflective metering. But depending on the subject I might sometimes meter differently, in the video where I shoot Cinestill in the Berlin subway station for example I used an external light meter (as you saw me use on one shot in this video as well). I use the lightmeter app for luminous subjects or when I have a bright light source in the image. When the light is more ambient or evenly distributed I prefer incident metering with my external light meter - and on the garage door I double checked with my external light meter because I also wanted to have the blinds and walls of the exterior to be properly exposed. When shooting Cinestill I do not compensate for reciprocity failure, but with other films you have to calculate additional time due to reciprocity failure. Hope that helps a bit?

For Cinestill I don‘t do any compensation, since it’s not really sensitive to reciprocity failure. For other film stocks I usually use the calculation sheets you can find included in the film box or on the website of the manufacturer. However, I heard that there are great apps for that as well.

@KarinMajoka3 жыл бұрын
Congrats on your new camera! :) thanks for the info. I know about reciprocity failure. However, Cinestill is not as affected of it though and can handle several seconds of exposure without any need for compensation. For other films it’s very relevant though
