The rhythm was off a little, for one, and two, the style he was playing was not that of Beethoven, but rather, Schumann. He did well, but Sarah did well to point out the small things that are actually pretty large issues in a tryout.

@@jkara7843 actually they do a lot of mistakes. Listen carefully to how she sings it (or how she plays) and how they try to repeat it. You will notice a lot of differencese...tuning, sound, volume, rythm...it's a long way to Tipperary

She is the only one with a lapel mic on, which has a tremendous influence on what her horn sounds like to us... i.e. the others have no mic and you're hearing the sound from across the room, whereas her horn is inches from her mic. Not saying her low end isn't resonant, just that it's impossible to tell from this video.

@@CaseyConnor Well it is. Shes the greatest low horn player. Her low notes are stunning. And a lapel mic isn't an advantage in playing a brass instrument. You get distortortion and unwanted frequenties. Even with that how much rounder and warmer her sound is then the others. And when she does the " wrong " examples it also sounds different. If you don't hear that its not Sarah fault but your ears ;)

I do it sometimes without thinking. horn players are 10x louder than any trumpet or trombone. They have to be because the horn is facing the wrong way. On top of that it's aimed right at his ear. I use to think i twas disrespectful but its really... nothing XD

I'm a drummer who knows nothing about French horn BUT I know Beethoven's music intimately. Sarah Willis' teaching style is superb. Why can't every teacher be like this? Some of them act like they don't even like music! She is intensely involved both in the music and in student's progress yet she is not condescending in any way. It is rare to find this balance today. Bravo!

@@12Trappor That's just because horns are weird. Traditionally when there's 2 horn voices it's usually horns 1 and 3 playing one voice and 2 and 4 playing the other. It's notated as the 2nd horn, but it is the lowest voice so colloquially it would really make more sense to call it the 3rd.

That's because she plays second horn in the Berliner Philharmoniker. She's been in the orchestra for quite a few years (since 1991) so it comes as no surprise that her accent has a slight German quality.

I play french horn, and i have for many years now, but i could never get over the whole anxiousness and rudeness of auditions. I did it as a "Hobby" if you will, knowing true well i would never do it professionally, because everything you do is judge by the most uptight people in the world. As much as i love the instrument and playing is of course, if you ever want to do it as a career, you should know, you will be judged, everything about you will be, and you are competing with hundreds of others of the same standard or higher. Just know that even if you or your teacher believes you to be the best, there are millions of players that will put you down for the most minute discrepancies. Just be warned.

Yes. This is why doing well in an audition takes, besides hard work and luck, the choice to step into yourself as a player and own how you play. You choose to surrender to the audition process and fully embrace yourself as a musician and leave everything on the table. You only reach the ability to achieve in an audition when other people’s judgement of you literally doesn’t matter to you. It takes belief.

At the time of the premiere of the Eroica symphony French horns had no valves yet. Poor players of that time, I'm sure Beethoven wasn't as nice to them as Sarah Willis.

the young student is extremely talented... he will make a name for himself one day, that is for sure. How fortunate he is to have this lovely lady and one of the great horn players alive today to be his teacher. I doubt he will ever forget her marvellous teaching and influence upon him. You're in sixth grade. Focus on developing a good tone with clear single tongue flexibility first. As your body and embochure develop, you can move onto double tonguing.

My daughter studied and played horn from sixth grade, all through junior and senior high school. she became very skilled and was chosen for honor band at the county and regional level. Upon graduation and going off to college, she put her horn down and never played again. one of the biggest disappointments of my life - all that money, time, and effort !😒 But the skills she learned by studying music have benefitted her for the rest of her life!😊

In a certain unavoidable sense the masterclass technique/ritual is an exercise in futility because whatever coaching that happens usually springs from the playing experience of the Master, and not what the *pupils* are experiencing as they scale this immortal structure of LVB: witness the Master inserting Barenboim’s exhortation. Another point worth remembering is that the pupils pedagogical approach and the guest Master’s approach might not . . . gel. [new edit] Ah, yes: the monstrous initial challenge the trio faces is that Beethoven put no dynamic marking! [ new edit ] She took way too long to correct the articulation of the quarter notes: what I would have said is, “gentlemen, how do we play ALL Beethoven quarters in fast tempi?” In unison, they should answer, “SHORT!” ( work in progress )

I don’t play a wind instrument, I can still tell when there are places or measures to improve on. We also don’t have the sheet music, so when she marks on something like a crescendo, we can’t really tell there was going to be one. Unless you predict it, or know the work well.
