My heart always goes out to the members of such an orchestra. These are the people who as children sacrificed going out with the other kids to play, and as teenagers resisted the temptation to disco and party, because they wanted to practise and perfect their art. Now they are receiving their just rewards. God bless them!

Karajan didn't record all Mahler symphonies, but I know that he did Mahler 5, 6, and a masterful recording of the 9th, too. It's quite sad that he never tried the 2nd or 3rd... :( No videos of any of them, afaik.

Mahler was definately not Karajans forté. He was too much of a Bruckner man. So basically the total opposite to Bernstein who was too much of a Mahler man to get Bruckner.

Hat Rattle diesmal auch den 3 Hammerschlag im 4. Satz (7 vor 165) erklingen lassen - so wie 1990 mit dem CBSO - oder hat er ihn diesmal wegelassen?

Ich fand die 6. lag Rattle immer gut. Nur leider gehört er zu den Dirigenten, die sich hier an Mahler dem Dirigenten und nicht Mahler dem Komponisten orientieren und das Andante an zweiter Stelle spielen lassen. Das hat Mahler bei seinen Aufführungen auch so gemacht, obwohl er das erst anders konzipiert hatte. Ich finde das Konzept besser. Das Andante hat an dritter Stelle mehr Gewicht und leitet mit Es-Dur am Ende viel besser zum c-moll Beginn des Finales über.

It's only a short snippet, but for me there is a lack of energy here. I see the pain in Rattle's face, but I only hear it to a limited extent in the music. It's too harmless for me.

Maestro Rattle's tempo is a bit slower and more deliberate than most others who give it the manic treatment.

Understandable, Mahler is not for everybody. It's usually love or hate for the listener and his symphonies are long. The Adagietto of his 5th Symphony does have a universal appeal.

Yes, a grim military march predominates in the first and last movements of Mahler's 6th. It was premiered in 1906, less than a decade before the European cataclysm of World War II and in this respect, the symphony can be seen as prophetic.
