Are you a cool season grass native that has moved south and doesn't know which warm season grass is right for your lawn? If so, I'll give you the details on how to choose between bermudagrass and St. Augustine grass. They are similar in several ways but have some distinct differences that I'll point out to help you decide. After watching this video, you'll understand what conditions these two grass types prefer, which will make picking one for your lawn much easier.
I decided to share this info while making a trip to visit my in-laws in north Texas. Their lawn has bermuda and St. Augustine for reasons outlined in the video. If you have to pick one or the other, rest assured, they both make for beautiful lawns! Also, be aware, these are not the only two warm season grass types. Zoysia and centipede are other popular options but are not discussed here.
Be sure to watch these videos next for lots more bermudagrass information...

Rio Grande Valley south Texas by the border, st Augustin is the number one seller big-time. I personally always buy St Augustin because I've seen people with Bermuda and it's not consistent, sometimes it's ok but most the time it's not green enough. St Augustin stays green and it's tough in summer and winter, and comes back alive with constant care.

I’m from Central Florida, I have St Augustine in my front yard w barely any shade and it’s too much direct sun for it. I had to be really on top it watering but then it got fungus many times and then it got bugs plus spending a lot in water until the point I just gave up and it died around 95% Now I’m considering Bermuda since it seems it does better with more direct sun

I live in St. Louis Missouri and I have Meyer Zoysia, Bimini Bermuda and St Augustine grass. Yes, you can grow St Augustine in the transition zone
@BudgetLawns
@BudgetLawns 4 жыл бұрын
Is your St. Aug. mixed in with the bermuda & zoysia or is it its own stand of turf? You can certainly grow it anywhere the temperature gets hot enough for it. And it does in St. Louis in the summer, just as it does where I live in Arkansas. However, that doesn't mean most people should choose it for their lawn in mine or your area. That's according to agricultural science, not my opinion. St. Aug. is not a cold tolerant grass, and you know just as much as I do that the winters in both of our areas are COLD. Just like I could grow Kentucky Bluegrass here in the transition zone. It'll grow for sure, but when the HOT summer hits, it's toast. Why would I want to deal with the headaches of trying to grow a cool season grass in a hotter than desirable climate? Doesn't make sense. Same goes for St. Aug. in St. Louis. It just doesn't make sense for the average homeowner choosing their grass for their lawn. Now, there area exceptions like yourself who might know more than the average Joe. Cool that you're making it work. Keep it up.

Do st augustine plugs work? I'm mean how far apart should I space apart. And how holg before they tie in together. Or am I better off getting a couple of pallets instead?
@BudgetLawns
@BudgetLawns 3 жыл бұрын
Yea, they'd work. How far apart you space them is dependent on how fast you want the area to fill in. If you want it to fill in faster, closer together is better. If you're patient and don't mind waiting, you can spread them a bit further apart. Sod vs. plugs is really your call based off your budget. You can save a little by plugging. St. Aug. sod is pretty expensive. Thanks for the question and watching! Appreciate ya. Hope this helps.

@BudgetLawns
@BudgetLawns Жыл бұрын
Thank you. To be honest, I have no sprinkler system first hand experience. I still do it the old fashioned way with hoses and oscillating sprinklers. Oddly, I enjoy it. But being that st. aug is typically mowed significantly higher than manicured bermuda, it seems like you would want to raise them a pinch to clear the grass. Sorry I can't give you a definite answer. Can an electric dethatcher be ran through either of these grasses?
@BudgetLawns
@BudgetLawns 3 жыл бұрын
Yes to both but a few other thoughts. Bermuda doesn't have to be dethatched often, especially if you scalp once or twice a year. St. Augustine should only be dethatched in extreme thatch situations. Dethatching St. Aug. can really damage the turf if not done properly. Use caution for St. Aug. Thanks for watching and the question. Hope this helps.

Thank you. Appreciate ya. I’ve never had to buy Bermuda seed. I’ve always had sod. However if I did, I’d probably go with GCI Turf’s seed. It’s a lot more expensive than the cheap stuff from Lowe’s but will be a lot better quality. And it will still be much less expensive than sod. Hope this helps. Thanks again.

Another good point is unlike hybrid and common bermuda grass; St. Augustine doesn't have seeds that you can just go out and buy. You are stuck with plugs or sod patches if you ever need to do heavy fixing. You can also do the runner plant method as well.

What is the runner plant method..?
@treflippa2
@treflippa2 9 ай бұрын
@michaelw2797 when you edge or weed eat your runners instead of throwing them away replant them in soil and they'll grow and fill in smaller patches. You'll know what runners are best for this as You'll be able to see roots underneath them. If you don't see strong roots then you may still be able to use that runner but it may need a little more TLC to get going.
