I DID THIS!! Well over 15 years ago, my company would send around a manila envelope, EVERY month, containing birthday cards for every employee with a birthday that month. We were expected to sign them and pass them off to another employee to continue the cycle until every employee had signed the cards. At the time we were crazy busy, working long hours, and facing insane deadlines. As you can imagine, we grew to loathe the sight of that envelope. When it was my turn, I would stack the cards up, then move them through like an assembly line, hurriedly finding a blank portion of the card and signing “Happy Birthday!” without even bothering to check who the card was for. Well . . . that caught up to me one day when I realized too late that a card I’d signed . . . wasn’t a birthday card. Just as I was about to set the card aside and grab another one, I glanced down and saw that someone else had written “So sorry for your loss.” Everyone else who’d signed the card had shared a message of consolation, rather than celebration. Oops. I didn’t even bother to scratch it out.

At the office birthday cards were always passed around in a folder to be discreetly signed. One day I got that folder, signed the card “happy birthday, you totally deserve this!”. Found out later it was a sympathy card- thankfully they weren’t mad. They came up to me thanking me for making them laugh. I wanted to crawl into a whole 😂
