I agree, but as a practical matter, there are a LOT of people making a LOT of money off of the current system (importantly including politicians) who have a personal financial interest in keeping things the way they are. They will pull out every trick in the book to keep it. I am hopeful for Medicare for All, but to be honest, skeptical that it will come to fruition. But, I will definitely advocate/help for politicians who are for it.

How so? He handily won every primary debate according to everyone save the establishment, who had a heavy Clinton bias.
@fetchyryu6 жыл бұрын
Are you serious? Clinton actually financially owned the DNC, who did everything in their power to win her the nomination, and she still barely did so. Multiple states were called by faulty registration procedures and uncounted provisional ballots, and one state (the very first state, Iowa) was literally decided by coin flips. The democratic primary is inherently undemocratic with their practice of superdelegate voting, and it was even further weighed in Clinton's favor by the establishment media who would include the superdelegate votes in their tallies before the convention where the votes were actually cast, which was entirely unprecedented. www.politico.com/magazine/story/2017/11/02/clinton-brazile-hacks-2016-215774 www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-fix/wp/2017/11/02/ex-dnc-chair-goes-at-the-clintons-alleging-hillarys-campaign-hijacked-dnc-during-primary-with-bernie-sanders/?noredirect=on I don't know what you're trying to imply with your sarcasm. Sanders is quite literally the most popular politician in America by every metric, and his policies are overwhelmingly popular now. At the time, everyone went out of their way to paint him as unrealistic, but now his policies are borderline mainstream. He was running against a political juggernaut. Only one year before the primary, he suffered a 40 point deficit in popularity polling in New Hampshire, which he ended up sweeping in that primary election by over 20 percent the other way. He managed swings just as impressive all over the country. God knows how he would have fared if he had as much air time as Trump.

@vanderritchie-- Did the average American who didn't know how single payer works come out of this interview more educated? I think the answer is Yes. Maybe it looks aggressive to you as someone who should distrust CNN and knows how single payer works, but how does this play out for a 40 year old working class man who doesn't know how healthcare is structured? Bernie comes out looking really smart, and single payer really reasonable. The biggest enemy of Progressives is Mainstream Media not paying attention to them. They will be collecting all that money from the people, and we still won't be able to go to the doctor, and it will not lower Health Care. Health care will still continue to go up. No matter what we do, just like housing keeps going up, and food keeps going up. All MEDICARE percipients pay for their MEDICARE. Just ask a retiree, or some one disability. We do not get free MEDICARE or MEDEICAD, we pay for it, plus co-payments. Plus MEDICARE leaves you paying 20% of you medical Bills. There are 3 groups of people who would benefit from this; NA, RE, and of course the Children. Its not what he is saying it would be.

As a Canadian, now living in the US for the last 5 years. Every negative talking point I hear about why Single Payer Healthcare in America is either a flat out lie, or a ridiculous spin of the truth. Facts. In the US. I pay $1,350/month for my insurance Premium. My wife and I each have $500 deductibles. We have $35 copays. Approx $17,300/year. Anthem has raised the premium on our grandfathered account by 15% each of the last 3 years, for no specified reason. They still don't cover everything! And they can close at any time effectively cancelling our plan. No real peace of mind. In Canada, Single payer is rolled into our taxes. The total cost is minimal compared to the average median in the US. We are guaranteed healthcare, and we do not file for bankruptcy over medical bills. FACT: I had pneumonia in Canada 6 years ago, and diverticulitis here in the United States. Both required almost the exact same scans, labs, emergency room needs. My bill in Canada $0. My bill in the United States, if I did not have insurance. Over $8,000. I had insurance, so I have to pay my $500 deductible. Plus my overpriced medication. I'm considered very lucky that I could afford it, and that my plans deductible is so low. Long and short, Single payer healthcare, the longer you wait, will become harder and harder to implement. Americans deserve Single Payer Healthcare. It will absolutely increase the quality of life, as well as taper down many of the other violent natures that arise from desperation. As someone who has live in both systems, I promise Single Payer is the only way to go. Private corporations should not be making record profits in healthcare. This is not socialism, this is human decency and common sense. Not to mention, economically more stable and beneficial in the long run. You want transparency when it comes to healthcare, go to Single payer. where the rich will be the first to complain when something isn't up to standard, and we all will benefit across the board.

If Americans actually knew how universal healthcare works and stops listening to politicians who are in the pocket of the big pharma they would be shouting in the streets to get it. I am a Canadian who doesn’t pay 50% of my income in taxes, I never have to wonder if I can afford it or lose my house. My doctors don’t have to get permission for a procedure and I get the highest of care. Your government already pays over double what our government already pays for universal healthcare. I was diagnosed with cancer and has a Ct scan and treatment within 2 weeks. Is our system perfect no but 99% of Canadians would never give up our universal healthcare. Cuomo you need to do more research. I myself don’t pay for any prescriptions but anyone I know don’t pay hundreds in prescription costs that Americans pay. Most people do buy a supplemental insurance (approximately $75.00 or less). So I do pay in my taxes but I never get a bill and don’t lose my house. I win

@brreezy4216 жыл бұрын
I'm not trying to trash your opinion or experiences at all here, but comparing Canada's economy and the US's economy and the impact universal healthcare would have on each is not a fair comparison. Canada basically has no military budget and not even close to the same population density, much less diversity in in economic areas. Also, things are not perfect in Canada, you could hear plenty of experiences of individuals waiting long periods of time for treatment and a lack of qualified and dedicated doctors to particular patients. Americas healthcare system has major issues as well, but this is not a black and white issue, there needs to be discussion and balances to find a real long term solution.
@myopinion39086 жыл бұрын
Ben Cunningham again I caution you about listening to stories I know not to be true. We are comparing per capita which means per person that doesn’t have any bearing on population. We do have a military budget and yes it is not like your but does yours really need to be increased like Trump wants. Canada doesn’t have your population but the average Canadian makes more money lower unemployment. Yes we do need more doctors but the doctors we do have are very qualified why do you think Americans are always up here recruiting. We have so many doctors retire that we didn’t have enough to replace but that is already being addressed. Any wait times are non emergency. No one dies waiting in Canada but the same can’t be said in the US. My doctor retired and I found a good one in 3 weeks. We have clinics that you can walk into and see a doctor the same day.
@myopinion39086 жыл бұрын
kenneth meyer I’m not lucky it happens all the time. Non emergencies you wait. It’s not perfect but I would never change it.
@brreezy4216 жыл бұрын
My opinion I also caution you on basing your opinions on your own experiences and making blanket statements without facts or data to back it up. Once again, America is in no way perfect and has many problems, but to act like Canada is in a perfect state right now and appears to be set up to be extremely prosperous in the future is disingenuous. It may end up doing great, or it may hit hard economic times in the future, nobody knows at this point and I'm not trying to make a statement on that. No country is perfect. For every comment that says Canadian healthcare is amazing because they had a great experience, you can find another that says it sucks. I'm not saying it's great or it's terrible, but you need objective, wide-reaching and long-term views when making decisions on policy. Also, if a system works in one place, it does not mean it will work in a larger/varying place. And saying Canada also has a military budget and insinuating that I advocate for extreme spending and unchecked spending on military is also disingenuous. Canada has a very low military budget because it's unnecessary, which in no way is their fault. But they can afford that luxury and have been able to because the US is a major, if not the largest, world power and has been for the last 100-150 years or so, give or take. Many countries around the world and in the recent past have benefited from that luxury as well from a neighboring country/countries having a large military force that stops the incentive of outside forces attacking them because their neighbors will help them in need, such as many European countries. This radically changes the way you have to look at the way each country is set up economically (which is really just hitting the tip of the iceberg, because there's a million factors that differentiate economies between countries). I'm not saying you're wrong in your experience or that Canada is set up for failure. But that's still to be seen, and even if this system is great for Canada, it doesn't mean it will work well for every country in the world.

This is what you call an interview to defend...like defending a dissertation. Cuomo is giving Bernie a chance to defend his policy proposal. However, Bernie is being a little disingenuous. M4A will only cover basic healthcare and prescription drugs will not be included. It will only cover dental, vision, and hearing aids for senior citizens. So after he raises your taxes to pay for M4A, you will still need other insurances if you have vision, dental, and specialty needs. People get so hung up on WHAT Bernie says but they pay no attention to what he DOES NOT say. He obfuscates a lot, and when you compare his responses from one interview to another on the subject, there are differences based on how he is pressed to respond. Yes, his proposal is similar to Canada's, but what he neglected to say is many Canadians do not like their plan and they are being taxed 40% more or less of their income and it does not cover prescriptions. Their drug companies are regulated for costs. So Canadians come here for drugs when they can't get a drug because it is not approved by the government. So what if my healthcare is non basic? What then? Again, Cuomo tried to give Bernie an opportunity to explain his plan, but he shied away from the truth. He is being a smart politician by dangling the attractive sounding parts to people hoping they will take the bait, but he would do better being honest so the people can really decide if this is something they want. Doing away with private insurance businesses and telling doctors they have to take a 30% to 40% pay cut, as well as, telling me I won't have a choice about MY insurance coverage (which I like), is some serious change. Cuomo opened the door so Bernie could explain how he was going to sell that change but he never stepped through it. Hence that old addage: "A bird in the hand is better than two in the bush." Or this one: "Better safe, than sorry." Or maybe this one: "If something sounds too good to be true, it usually is."

@@rblackman2Why do Americans want their health insurance that is tied to their employer anyway? Something like 50% of Americans have employer sponsored health insurance and so would be vulnerable to a sudden accident rendering them bankrupt via medical debt by just simply losing their job. I can't imagine how many people are gonna be in this situation right now with all the lay offs due to coronavirus. Must also severely discourage starting small businesses or just leaving your job in search of another one due to the lack of safety net. Employers have their workers by the short hairs in the USA! Its just bizarre, the USA is so incredibly far behind the rest of the world when it comes to healthcare outcomes both in absolute terms and per dollar terms. Not that hard to just copy better and cheaper healthcare systems from around the world, no one has to reinvent wheel. Why not do it?

Plus, Single payer would SAVE the US money as a % of GDP, as it currently spends 18% on healthcare, whereas the UK and Canada each spend about 10%. The main difference is that the money would be spent by the Govt, instead of the private sector, so yes you would pay a bit more tax, but you wouldn't have to pay for insurance premiums, so you would net save money.

@MsSandhu96 жыл бұрын
oftenlucid You are right. Not only premiums, but also copays or co insurance and deductibles. And many services are still not covered and you have to sometimes pay totally out of pocket. Americans need to calculate how much they are paying from their pockets to get their health services, DESPITE the facade of being covered by insurance. The premiums and out of pocket expenses run in thousands of dollars per year. Why not instead pay tax for that amount? At least coverage will be guaranteed. Before Obamacare, insurance companies would deny coverage if you had pre-existing conditions. Goes to show that what we call free market, can be very exploitative.

O S. What does that even mean? That is deflection, not trying to get to a solution. It just seems like a knee jerk reaction. What would you do differently? Or, a baseline question, is our current system working, in your view?
@MsSandhu96 жыл бұрын
O S It's your fundamentalist childish mentality about insisting on "choosing" that is responsible for the US being the only developed country to have millions of people uninsured. You don't realize that this way, you only have an ILLUSION of choice. If you are wise, you would CHOOSE to go for a solution that works better not just for others but also for you. Sometimes individual choices are just not the best. When it's a system like single payer, the overhead costs of running the healthcare system are more streamlined and organized (also there is more bargaining power when the entity is huge and single) hence reducing the overall cost much drastically, which basically means much lesser cost per person. This is not simply theoretical but a model hugely successful in other countries, whose healthcare outcomes are better than the US at a fraction of cost. If you are a wise person, you would weigh these pros and cons and make a choice that benefits everyone rather than insisting on being taken advantage by insurance companies, by healthcare providers and paying much more overall. I see your type of fanaticism as just what it is - childish fanaticism. It's immature to the nth degree. Insurance businesses' propaganda has also a lot to do with effectively brainwashing you by selling this "free market" bullshit. You should know that it's in their interest that things stay the way they are.
