Remember, Bernie was the _mayor_ of the town when he did this. He went to the mall, he found a couple of weird looking teenagers, and he interviewed them. He didn't make fun of them, he didn't cut them off. He asked them serious questions, and when they gave him shaky, nervous answers, he just asked them to explain further. Point by point they stated nearly everything that we’re currently struggling with as a society, in a remarkably brief interview. I will say that this is incredible to see, especially from a politician, let alone one that's currently in office. Simple questions, no follow-uips, counter-points, pointed questions aimed to challenge or undermine their perspective, or retorts to any of their responses, even when they brought up marxism and communism. He actually WANTED their perspective so he could add it to his own rather than find someone to preach to or dismantle for political points.

This might sound cheesy but I actually loved how open minded Bernie sounded in this video. Most adults just say 'kids this days...' and don't think further. But here Bernie honestly tried to engage in a deep conversation and was very understanding of their view

I think these guys had pretty interesting opinions. I can imagine that it was very refreshing for them to be able to speak their minds. And I get why they might not be entirely well-spoken about their opinions since they never get sound them, but it was still interesting to hear what they think.
@FireheadLazzo3 жыл бұрын
That a very kind way of phrasing it. I know a lot of people who would hear this and conclude that they have vague political thoughts and don't know anything about the world. But you're right, they probably never got the opportunity to voice these trains of thought in a calm, understanding environment.

It's hilarious to see him trying to engage in response to what they are saying, but this is so wonderful, this captured moment. To listen to these young people--about my age back then--try to express how they feel and think is so heartening. They warm to their subject and also I think understand that they are missing stuff and are looking for it. Of course, they mimic each other as any other group does--they are similar in their rebellion and fashion--but they are striving to understand and live differently than the world set out for them. Thanks to Bernie for taking to the streets and the malls. ;-^)

Especially in the US, it's increasingly rare that people will engage in conversation with people who will challenge their viewpoints or even their appearance. Bernie doesn't judge, he asks: hey, you look different from the rest here, why is that? If you ask an honest question, you get an honest answer!
