Remember, Bernie was the _mayor_ of the town when he did this. He went to the mall, he found a couple of weird looking teenagers, and he interviewed them. He didn't make fun of them, he didn't cut them off. He asked them serious questions, and when they gave him shaky, nervous answers, he just asked them to explain further. He treated them with respect.

I can’t help but feel struck by how insightful and prescient these “mall punks” actually were. Point by point they stated nearly everything that we’re currently struggling with as a society, in a remarkably brief interview. It seems no great thing that Bernie didn’t disrespect, interrupt or redirect them, and instead, listened with open non-judgmental curiosity. The real tragedy is that almost no one else at the time did, and we’re paying for it now.

@floofff
@floofff 5 ай бұрын
@@jal-kx6tm It is true that rhetoric can be inspired from previous generations, but in this case said rhetoric is countercultural. It was mostly uncommon for alternative individuals to be accepted as the “status quo” in the 60’s/70’s/80’s/90’s as their perspectives and outward appearances challenged societal norms instead of adhering to them. Bernie was and is also anti-capitalist and largely socialist, which was shunned by most Americans until more recently. Media, world events, the economy, and politics all contribute to such fluctuations in societal attitudes.
@jal-kx6tm

@@floofff your first sentence contradicts itself. marxism was probably the most countercultural movement we've seen in the modern world. everything in this clip stems from that. "alternate" individuals are alternate because they're against the status quo, even today. i think you might be surprised at how little traction socialism has gained in this country over the past couple election cycles despite the narrative. before bernie, there were a ton of such "alternate" politicians. no generation is unique, i guarantee you can read stuff from the 1800s and you will find perspectives that hew very close to everything you've said here.

Simple questions, no follow-uips, counter-points, pointed questions aimed to challenge or undermine their perspective, or retorts to any of their responses, even when they brought up marxism and communism. He actually WANTED their perspective so he could add it to his own rather than find someone to preach to or dismantle for political points.

It's hilarious to see him trying to engage in response to what they are saying, but this is so wonderful, this captured moment. To listen to these young people--about my age back then--try to express how they feel and think is so heartening. They warm to their subject and also I think understand that they are missing stuff and are looking for it. Of course, they mimic each other as any other group does--they are similar in their rebellion and fashion--but they are striving to understand and live differently than the world set out for them.
