Compare this with that video of Dianne Feinstein telling the kids talking to her about climate change that she knows better than them because she's "been doing this for 30 years." It's no surprise Bernie does well with young people. He listens to them and genuinely cares about what they think, rather than dismissing them as a bunch of idiots.

Having spent time with both Mike and Michele as a teenager in the '80s ( I also worked at the Teen Center for a few of those years ) I am struck now by how much of what the punk scene in Burlington, VT and beyond stood for is very similar to the messaging in songs by folk artists like Woody Guthrie and Malvina Reynolds. If you listen to a lot of those old pre-hippy era songs, much of the messaging and lyrics were about many of the same social issues that are still present, even today. While watching this interview today Malvina's song Little Boxes as well as her song The Little Mouse, came to mind. Thanks, Mike and Michele for doing this follow-up interview 32 years later.

Anarchism is a leftist ideology which calls for the dismantling of unjust hierarchies. It does not mean the same thing as anarchy in the popular perception. There are various versions like anarcho syndicalism and anarcho socialism which contain systems like community policing. It's still organized, it just ensures that no one can gain too much power over others without direct checks and balances.
@NJ-wb1cz
@NJ-wb1cz 4 жыл бұрын
Just your description alone makes it sound exactly like feudalism. Nothing stops one "community" from growing by being the worst most efficient, aggressive and authoritarian community, forcing other communities either to bunch up to repeal the threat or submit and get assimilated. Your system requires a benevolent dictator above those communities who will keep relative peace between the communities and would forcefully break up too powerful ones. European nations have solved it by organizing in a union, but it required WW2 to make everyone come together - this wasn't a natural inclination for literally thousands of years of constant wars between communities, and democratic communities didn't survive during that time - only authoritarian ones did.
@NJ-wb1cz
@NJ-wb1cz 4 жыл бұрын
@Ühinenud Front that's simply wrong. Being against hierarchy requires having measures in place that prevent hierarchy from appearing, and anarchy doesn't have any, it's completely open to having dictatorship. Again, what stops few powerful communities unify under some charismatic leaders, based on religious ideas, and dominate all other, "true" anarchic communities? Nothing. Who will tell people that they can't be brainwashed by sociopaths to die for their cause? No one. Who will stop manipulators from creating ideologies that make people cling to them? No one.

The worst part isn't that they (everyone) think they have a say about what you (don't) wear etc and they form an opinion on you due to your appearance (any "issues" one can find about), but that most are shallow in general, in every aspect of life, and there are consequences. Again, in case it's not clear enough, I also say this about ppl who like piercings etc and kinda look down on ppl who don't, I'm always striving to be objective rather than accepted by any group, and things do go both ways no matter what anyone says (obviously, objectivity =/= neutrality and complete demonizing or denial of what "both extremes" say; just leaving this here). I frankly don't care if ppl think whatever they want of me (everyone understands what they can and see what they want to see anyway) or the way I or my hair look (well, I look kinda boring I suppose, a bit nerdy or something, and even now in my 30s without the teen insecurities of the past, I by no means feel perfect/amazing looking, or inferior or superior to anyone due to this... and I've been a perfectionist when it comes to certain things, less so today but yh). But knowing the true mentality and perspective of ppl has been a weight and something you have to try hard not to let it drain all your hope and steal whatever innocence/positivity/openness still exists in the world of today. And these are the things that matter, and what society should be blamed for. The multiplying selfishness, immaturity, complexes, fanaticism/hate/bullying (for whatever excuse they can find), and cynicism/trolling that are constantly induced in and tolerated by ppl. Couldn't care less about different tastes when it comes to appearance...

@@robincrowflies Seriously, those who pay attention knew/know where this leads. And resistance means to actually stay/be almost intact and true to values that benefit the society/all life on Earth. Nowadays, everyone is turning (has been turned, imo) into a zombie and they always have to blame something else, from different ppl, to phones, animals, aliens, ghosts and curses, to the rich/politicians/system. All while they call others irresponsible and sheep, etc. Maximum acceptance of cynicism, mistrust, a selfish worldview that is imposed on them, and everything that keeps worsening things (but it's okay because they resist vaccines - which is a good band and I don't get why ppl hate it so much 🥴🤭). Yes, manipulation included (but somehow, it's always others or the opposite side of the fence that utilizes cheap tactics etc xD and the recent videos of such topics that these ppl click on are flooded with comments about the media, yet what they say is equally bad and false and harmful, if not identical to what media often say, at least where I live). Could mention a million things and fill KZbin servers with replies, but it wouldn't be enough to do justice to the countless examples of all the things we do wrong (and excuse or tolerate whenever we feel like we should, and continuing having the nerve to judge others' double standards). I don't really care if we do it consciously or not, it has to be fixed. Yeah, we look and are different, and we can feel awkward when seeing something we aren't particularly fond of or accustomed to, there are always hasty assumptions to be made, and so on, but if one judges anyone based on a small percentage of their existence then that says a lot about the braincells of the one who does that. Maybe things (imagine the more complex matters) are too complicated and confusing, but if one is so addicted to oversimplifications and generalizations and tribalism, and a shallow view of reality, then how do they get to belittle others and act as if they're masters of truth...? xD The image some ppl have of themselves is beyond wishful thinking, and they really think they have what it takes to call others this or that and fully reject them instantly, based on whatever excuse (well, this behavior probably covers some need, some insecurities, but why notice that when everyone is taught to exude confidence and get away with everything?). p.s. firstly, I've heard of danning-kruger effect, and secondly, I obviously don't imply that preferences and taste and chemistry don't matter. Btw, contrary to what I always see and hear ppl say, respect isn't earned, it's lost... and it's lost gradually based on deeper stuff than an appearance. Just saying. Now, hopefully this post will be approved by this holy platform... it's hit or miss even though I sound like a broken record and say more or less the same things every time xD Last but not least, nice username there, it reminds me of a song (Thrice - As the Crow Flies). I'm pretty sure I've told that to someone else before too...

What a lot of people dont seem to understand is that easily accessible education is a core value of punk. The current system benefits off of everyday people being poorly educated. The first step to changing the system is by everyone learning how it works and how it can be improved. I used to be friends with some punks who ran a "communist library." Educational books were loaned out on the honor system. No return by date. No late fees. People were given time to read and learn at their leisure and trusted to return the books when finished. Even the "dumb" punks I knew were genuinely interested in learning new things.

33 years later and this mall punk clip is still current. Nothing new under the sun. Mike talks about programming in schools. Also political messaging in music they were listening to. This was all pre internet where you had to go out of your way to be well read and find information. Tv was very censored. Radio less so. Seeking out your own tribe was difficult if you weren't inclined to be mainstream. The governments don't want critical thinking or individualism to be encouraged. If you are wired differently, you are always that way. It's not something you can help despite decades passing. You don't change much. I think a good strong society is actually a utopian dream. Global society is still fractured and unstable and controlled despite world wars and pandemics and technologies. Bucking systems is not easy despite idealistic and genuine intentions.

Plus most Independents in the primary vote for Bernie, and same with youth. The Dems who are greater than age 45 "vote blue no matter who," so they would reliably vote for Bernie in November _if_ he were to win the primary. Bernie has the best chance of beating Trump. Biden only has the population of Dems >45 years old. The Indep and youth won't turn out for Biden. He will lose against Trump.

Amy Ill No chance Biden loses against Trump. I love Bernie and wanted him more, but the youth have not come out to vote for him. They have came out to vote less for him than they did four years ago. And now Biden’s lead is insurmountable. The Question Bernie supporters need to ask is do you want to continue this insane corruption of Trump with horrific environmental policies, and his bumbling of the virus pandemic. Or someone like Biden, who is far from the perfect candidate. But Obama was also far from the perfect candidate but he didn’t set the country back a generation like Trump has. That is plenty reason to support Biden in the general election. Bernie will be supporting him fully because he knows what is at stake. And Bernie’s run was not a lost cause, there are many more people who support Medicare for all. And the next candidate who runs with that on their platform will have a better chance at winning the democratic primary.
@tinaferr
@tinaferr 4 жыл бұрын
@@mick2spic I'm wondering if Biden wins the primary if they don't just put someone better in like Cuomo. Either way I hear you. I'm 1000000% a berner but writing him in is just asinine. Plenty of especially older people genuinely support Biden and we're not going to convince them otherwise, it's a rational response given their experiences with other "radical candidates" (I don't know why bernie's campaign didn't tone down the divisive "revolution" rhetoric and instead highlight his policy and record, which might have shown new people he's not actually THAT radical in practice...like you already have the ideological base, now go for the people you need to win this thing) I'm old enough to remember ross Perot and young enough to remember nader, 3rd party candidates/write ins take votes away from their closest candidate. If I have to vote Biden I will, I won't like it any more than anyone else, but do you really think it'll be easier to achieve our goals with trump or Biden in office?
@mick2spic
@mick2spic 4 жыл бұрын
tinaferr Even if Bernie would have won the presidency it would have been hard for him to achieve our goals. It would depend on the senate turning democrat. And then convincing enough corporate / center democrats into supporting Medicare for All, which would not be easy. Even with Bernie getting elected Medicare I don’t think Medicare for All would be a realistic possibility for another 8 years. Kind of how it took awhile to get gay marriage accepted from when Obama was first elected until he left office. More and more people are coming around to the idea of Medicare for All. And for that Bernie has done great good for society. Just like Yang bringing universal basic income to the forefront and into serious discourse. Biden is going to do infinitely more on climate change than Trump, who is literally a catastrophe and needs to be thrown out of office before he does more damage to the planet. Trump even has had the gall to roll back environmental regulations during this pandemic. I do like how Bernie is pushing Biden to have a stronger platform in tackling climate change. Bernie knows that his chances are beyond slim and one good thing he could do now is push Biden more strongly combats global warming. Biden will help the working class much more than corporate Donny. Not as much as Bernie of course, but there is no comparison who is better between Trump and Biden. The one thing I think has hurt Bernie the most was him labeling himself a socialist. Now I know full well that there is a difference between democratic socialism that Nordic countries have had tremendous success with and communist countries like Venezuela. But to many uneducated Americans socialism is a dirty word that can automatically mean communism. And that is a hang up in this country from the Cold War days. And it’s a weapon that could be used very successfully against Bernie in the general election. I believe it’s a big sign that Trump and the Russians would prefer Trump go against Bernie than Biden. I think Bernie could certainly win against Trump. But Biden being the “safer” pick is much more likely to beat Trump. That is why voters have come out in force for him. Who can beat Trump is the number one issue. And many working class independents like Joe, just like the likes Obama. Joe has a big advantage in the battleground state of Pennsylvania against Trump. And has a good shot to win Wisconsin and Michigan. And has a shot to win Florida, where Bernie would not do well in Florida against Trump. I believe the next go around this country will have some younger candidates to pick up the mantle from Bernie, while having socialist views, but while not having the label of being a socialist hanging over them. Then we will get some real change. But people need to vote. Young people need to come out. But the left has time on its side. Older and more conservative folks will die and be replaced by younger sand more left leaning. There will continue to be battles for the soul of the Democratic Party in the future like there was between Hilary and Bernie. AOC will be a leader for the working class left. Just my thoughts on it all. I’m taking the long view and optimistic for the future.

It's interesting to see a retrospective of this old video that I saw for the first time a few months back. What I liked about it was that Bernie would take the time to actually go out and TALK to people on the street. Actually ask their opinions and respectfully get to know them in some way that the likes of Hillary or Joe Biden would never do-- or at least I get the impression they would never do. It shows human interest for someone to engage with someone who outwardly represents a possibly opposing viewpoint. That's called "getting to know your constituents". This is one of the reasons why I feel that Bernie supports people and not politics as usual.
