democracynow.org - Cuba has begun nine days of mourning following the death of revolutionary leader and former President Fidel Castro, who died Friday at the age of 90. In Havana, tens of thousands of people lined up to pay their respects to Castro, who launched the Cuban revolution to oust the U.S.-backed Cuban dictator, Fulgencio Batista, and went on to lead Cuba for nearly a half-century. On Monday night, Democracy Now!’s Amy Goodman sat down with Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders for an interview in front of a live audience at the Free Library of Philadelphia, where he spoke about the life and legacy of the revolutionary leader Fidel Castro.

I have to say that it is really refreshing seeing a US politician speaking so openly and candidly about the true American history. The rest of the world knows it, especially those directly affected, but all you get from a standard cut out of American politician is the usual "we're the greatest!". I know Bernie and his politics but I'm surprised evn him doesn't have any problem with speaking about the actual history of US international relations.

I am happy that Sanders defends Cuba o the extent that he does, but it is important to push back against the defensive othering that Sanders is forced to do regarding Cuba. It is disingenuous to criticize Cuba’s economy when the U.S. has been dedicated to destroying that economy for 60 years. Every success Cuba has had - in providing universal quality healthcare, eliminating mother to child HIV transmission (the first in the world), providing education to 100% of their population, and in eliminating severe malnutrition- has been done in the context of the most powerful country in the world trying to destroy the Cuban revolution. Cuba has estimated that due to the extraterritorial nature of the U.S. blockade it has cost the country almost one trillion dollars in damages. Sanders tepid defense is far better than that of any other candidate (by light years) and a more bold stance could cost him too much. Therefore, it is up to us to speak the truth about Cuba and not give the day to mendacious anti-communist hysteria.
@mandinka323
@mandinka323 4 жыл бұрын
Shotround that is factually incorrect. Everything is covered by the government. Cuba has the most universalized health care system and smallest percentage of out of pocket spending around the world. Check out the World Health Organization’s information on Cuba. I did my Master’s thesis on Cuba’s medical collaboration with Ghana and a third of my doctoral dissertation was about Cuba’s health care system. So, I regret to inform you that you have been misinformed.

Cuba survived the collapse of the Soviet Union and an embargo by the US by implementing a sweeping program of sustainable agriculture. They were denied help from the US and went to permaculture experts in Australia for help. The result was that in 20 years Cuba created a system that recovered and restored DEPLETED farm land and productivity on a massive scale to feed itself and employ thousands. We need to look at how Cuba did it without imported fossil fuels and fertilizers or chemicals, international bank loans, industrial machines and corporate export agriculture. We live in a country that is exporting and simultaneously outsourcing our food production. We need to know how we'll feed ourselves when that system collapses.

@@mf1116 Trump's strength is only facade put up by Trump to appeal to his base. The truth is he has floundered on the worldwide stage in China, with his tariffs on China actually detrimentaly affecting the United State's economy much more than the Chinese economy, and they've been able to double down on their genocide against the Uighurs and their pushing of boundaries in the South China Sea. And do ever notice how he doesn't bring up the Wall anymore? It's because it was a complete and utter failure. It fails to keep cartels from the US whilst keeping families seperated. It was useless in the first place because there's more immigration to Mexico from the United States than the other way round, and the vast majority of immigrants arrive in the US legally and simply outstay their visas. In almost everything he touched on in his 2016 campaign, he failed badly, but sadly, Trump is a master of the media, and managed to pivot focus from his tonnes of obvious failures to things that still give him appeal as a strongman to his base, who's values and wants from a presidential candidate are eerily reminiscent to those of Fascists in the 1930's (strong leader with enough power to change things untested, nationalism, strong military and police, harsh punishments, especially on outsiders, etc;) things which you can observe in the UK as well with "grooming gangs," a myth created by the tories and the media, and fears of violent immigrants migrating from Pakistan and around that area, a threat which is massively overexagerated. Don't believe anyone that says Trump is a strong leader, he's just a failure who managed to exploit the fears and desires of a backwards and xenophobic American public, who's Fascistic tendencies remained underneath the surface until a candidate, Trump, appealed to those tendencies; a price for which they payed for without even realising it.

Cubans don't believe in free trade anyway, so I don't understand why you have a problem with the embargo. According to communist ideology, capitalists are bad people. but you have no qualms asking for help from a capitalist.
@TheBendablespoons
@TheBendablespoons 4 жыл бұрын
@@keyurpatel503 this is such an unbelievably confused rebuttal. That or, it's disingenuous. "Free trade" (which hasn't existed since 1900 due to monopolies in the imperialist core) is not the same as trade. Do you think trade is unique to capitalist markets? Are you really so dense that you think that trade is only possible/necessary in capitalism? There was trade under all social systems. The thing that makes capitalism unique is that it is commodity exchange for the sake of generating profit and growing capital. Cuba still must adhere to the long term laws of profitability. They must still develop the material conditions by expanding their industrial production for the development of socialism and thus Communism. This means that they have to engage in commodity exchange, both internally and externally. However, the profits of this exchange are distributed to the whole of society rather than into the pockets of a handful of financiers. So yes, they absolutely need to trade with 'capitalist' countries. How else will get get their oil, their wheat etc? It does not necessitate capitalism in anyway despite your clumsy attempt to try Edit: "according to communist ideology, capitalists are bad people". No. 'Communist ideology' (?) (Marxism?) does not make value judgments about capitalists. It recognizes that inherent in capitalism, in capital, is the exploitation of the proletariat by the capitalist. Regardless of whether they are 'bad people' or not, we want The working class to control what it produces instead of private capital. It has nothing to do with 'bad people'

@@TheBendablespoons Fidel Castro himself had requested Spanish capitalists to invest in Cuba, generate jobs because he could not provide jobs to people. During the time of the Soviet Union, Cuba dealt with the Soviet Union, but after the collapse of the Soviet Union the Cubans were starving. Do you think any company would invest in Cuba of the Cuban government decides to restrict the profits they make or the way in which they reinvest those profits. Technically speaking no country has been restricted from doing trade with Cuba. The thing is that if a country or corporation does trade with Cuba then immediately the American market is out of bounds for them. Now who in their right minds would prefer doing business with Cuba when compared to the USA. The USA is a far, far bigger market for goods and services when compared to Cuba. I see nothing wrong morally or ethically in the embargo. The bloody Cubans can trade with Venezuela, North Korea and Iran.
@TheBendablespoons
@TheBendablespoons 4 жыл бұрын
@@keyurpatel1982 Why arbitrarily embargo them? Capital seeks to expand everywhere. You are presenting a false dichotomy. Capitalists want to, and will invest in both the US and Cuba. If the Cuban economy is so shit, why does it need to be embargoed? Why can't the US just let it fail on its own merit? Your pedantic argument of 'technically speaking no country is restricted from trading with Cuba" is silly. You said it yourself, why would anyone trade with Cuba knowing they will not have access to American markets? It is completely arbitrary that the Americans block Cuba. There is no economic gain for it. In fact, as I said above, capital needs to expand everywhere possible. The answer lies in political economy. The US simply wants to destroy the free Cuban nation and return it to the puppet state it was under Batista. Any of your sophisms above are just mental gymnastics meant to obfuscate that fact.

The Cuban economy is literally nonexistent, they don't charge taxation like the USA, since everybody has to work for the government they just deduct heavily on all paychecks every single month your salary used to be $16/month (now they claim it is $40, but who knows?) So, the Cuban education and healthcare are effectively the most expensive on this planet (maybe in the entire solar system) and for something so expensive don't expect any quality whatsoever: you just can't imagine how schools or hospitals look like in Cuba, it is just heartbreaking. There are many videos posted by Cubans from Cuba in KZbin search them and watch them and you will see what I am talking about. The de facto government steals everything, they have huge bank accounts all over the world... and while the population suffers scarcity and hunger the leaders and their children live life at large traveling the world in luxury yachts, having birthday parties and weddings in France, etc... it is not a pretty picture.

Sometimes people use words to form paradoxes that may seem idiotic to people unable to infer some thinking from word play that would otherwise seem logical to people with an utter of common sense. So, you see, I merely used a play of words to offer what would typically be considered an understood point among a mass of people capable of perceiving this inference.

EDWARD 0383 I like Bernie Sanders, but some of what he says here I don't agree with. Sure they had universal healthcare, but the healthcare is so bad that doctors are payed less then newspaper boys and often people who come in with injuries have to fix it themselves with the gauze and materials available. Only thing positive that I know out of the medical field in Cuba is the lung cancer "cure". That's probably due to Castro making that the countries priority though. All those cigars and he dies at 90.
