This is a beautiful machine! I've been sewing on my 830 for nearly 45 years. It's a reliable old friend.

Thanks for the price discussion. I would have had no idea what was a fair price. She’s a lovely machine!

I understand. It’s hard to know what a bargain is, without knowing a regular pricing range. Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a pleasant comment. 😎👍

I learned sewing in this machine and i still have it. I am VERY grateful that it was given to me by a professional tailor who had graduated to a studio of Pfaffs and this was just kicking around. It came with the snap on table and all the feet. It is an absolute tank and I see what the prices are for the presser feet...even used...and I am stunned that someone gave me this. Its a solid piece of hardware and definitely read the owners manual, it is full of Bernina specific instructions that could be easily overlooked. I just did a PM on mine and it looks brand new, no bearing/journal slip, no cam wear, no failures whatsoever outside of basic maintenance. And thats after literally hundreds of hours of sewing. Built to go through a brick wall.

That’s one of the last great machines. I’m happy to hear how much you realize what a prize you have. Thanks for watching and dropping an excellent comment. 😎👍🏼

Thanks for posting this, Randy. It was my first "exposure" to Bernina and put the "30's" on my radar. And very timely... I walked into the local GW yesterday and there sat a green suitcase with a 730 inside! The lightswitch is pushed in and it is dirty from sitting idle for decades, but it appears to be complete and works! Love the build quality on these.

That 730 is a sweet example of Bernina quality and precision. It will sew for another century, just as good as the day they made it. Good find. 😎👍

One of the things that's found almost exclusively on genuine Bernina bobbin cases is the little hole in the finger the instructions tell you to use when doing buttonholes. Don't really like the clam-shell design of the 1000 series with that big back plate and the whole adjustments done via shifting the whole assembly block. Way more used to how they did it with the 530/730. But once fixed the 1000 series are nice machines. The 1008 (a cost reduced version of the 1030, less stitches, and missing those nice indicators for stitch position and settings recommendations on the front) was on Berina's catalog way into the 2010s. It was the last mechanical Bernina still kicking around. As the 1000 series was released in the mid/late 80s, this would make it one of, if not the Bernina model with the longest production life - it was available for over 30 years. Although every time I hear you quoting US accessory prices I get the urge to just fill a suitcase with some Pfaff and Bernina parts lying around and have my next US holiday paid for.

Totally correct. I appreciate your factual reporting on the Bernina machines. All those high dollar accessories will certainly be someone’s weekend at the casino. 😂😎👍🏼

Two finger threading from the front TIP, I just grip a short piece of thread between both my first fingers rather than using my finger and thumb, it is surprising how much more visibility there is. I have very big hands that are better suited to Blacksmith work; sewing machines are so much more quiet :-) I have in the past tried lots of tools and lip salve to stop the frayed ends of my thread. The tin wire thread pullers do not work well with thicker thread unless you use a larger needle.

Great tip. Some days I can thread needles effortlessly. Some days, it’s like I’ve never done it before, especially when I’m trying to wrangle around the camera on the tripod. First world problems, right? Thanks for your excellent comments and thanks for watching.😎👍

I have a 1030 from my Great Aunt. It looks just like yours. What is the dial on the left beside what looks like a stitch "recipe" for red and green. I can't figure out what setting equals |||||.

I have the 1020 & I love it but it’s just very hard for me to lug around anymore. It squeals ever so often for some reason?? It has been serviced but still squealing!
@randyyoursewingmachineman9954
@randyyoursewingmachineman9954 9 ай бұрын
If it was serviced properly, I would suspect that the squeal is from the drive belt. It could be loose or has a glaze on it. Just a guess.

I see why Sears wanted to copy Bernina. Is it metal body? Metal gears. The stitch selector reminds me of some Montgomery Wards machines I've seen. Looks like the Kenmore 158-1941, and 158-1931 are quite the awesome imitation.

That front load, 15 class setup is very reliable and easy to service. There’s a lot of similarities and interchangeability between some Kenmores and some Berninas. I guess that’s why they’re both on my short list of classic machines to buy.

Neither my Janome 672, nor my Kenmore 158s, nor my Adler 153, nor my Meister 101, has EVER thrown a code or any other computer tantrum. Analog is the only way to go.

I've been saying for years that GMC should just start stamping out the old Square Body Pickups but make them just as analog as they can and still meet emissions and safety standards. Give me a 2024, 1973 Heavy Half 4x4 with vinyl seats, roll-down windows, Warn locking hubs and ZERO screens-- and I'd be a happy man. @@randyyoursewingmachineman9954
