This is a great excercise. I'm 52 and have come to the realization that my speed progress is being hobbled by the fact that I 'swipe' pick as opposed to correctly alternate pick, or I'm somewhere in between using both methods. This is great for ascending runs as they can be really fast this way, but only about 30% of the time do I realize I'm picking correctly when descending because it just flows so smoothly.

Mr. Bernth , I'd really like to see a lesson , just like this very useful exercise , but in the major modes !! Thank you for all your help sir !!
@phoenixfireshomebase78004 жыл бұрын
You just have to think from G and play the same exercise, then you got G Major. Major and minor scales got the same notes, only the root is changing. You can try it if you play the exercise over G it will sound major and if you play it over E you will recognize that it sounds minor. E minor is E F# G A B C D G major is G A B C D E F# G

Great lesson, Bernth! Neat how, in E natural minor, the true tone center is the group of notes comprising G major, and flattening the F sharp to F natural changed the note formula to the notes from key of C. It’s a strange magic! \m/
@pedroadrianmaker964 жыл бұрын
Well , E phrygian is just a mode from C major. E minor has the same notes as G major. However , I think its wrong to say that the C chord or the G chord are the tone center , if you say that , you havent understood modes very well. When whe say " E phrygian" we are implying the tonal center is the E minor chord.

@EclecticEssentric4 жыл бұрын
Just think on it. You could take this exercise and alter it to practice more. Do it on string 6+5, then 4+3, 2+1, 5+4, 3+2 (this one will be unique). Or switch position after each 6 instead of repeating them twice, or do sets of 4 instead. Or do 123456 and 1 of the next section, stop and hold 1. Then repeat this again and again. This will teach you to switch positions perfectly each time. Move it through each position. Or count 12345 then backwards from 6: 65432, 12345, 65432. Making this a 10 count for a different sound. Or do 12, 34, 56, 65, 43, 21. Or do 123, 456, 654, 321 and make them sound like doublets or triplets instead of a 6 count. /some things I've done since I've seen this. Best wishes for your practice routine.

So all I have to do to play Phrygian is flatten the second on a minor scale?? Thank you Mr. BERNTH! :D PS: Please correct me if this is wrong.
@neelsaha4833 жыл бұрын
Yes. Phrygian is a minor mode. It is basically a natural minor scale with a flattened 2nd note. That flattened 2nd is the characteristic note of the phrygian mode. For example, the Dorian mode is a natural minor scale with a raised 6th note. That raised 6th is the characteristic note of the dorian mode. Once you internalise the construction of the natural major and the natural minor scale, the modes become a piece of cake.

Bernth, do you have a site wherein you are teaching step by step for beginner to interm to pro? I'm interested to join to know and understand more about all of these. Because you are teaching us these things for free unlike others that all of the stuffs *I believe including this kind of teachings*, you'll just be able to know it if you subscribe to their lesson and teaching site for almost $400 a month that is so sick. I can see that you are using a brand of guitar that is my ideal thing to have soon when I gets better. I'm planning to buy yamaha Guitar package for beginner and soon will get an Ibanez RG550 PN. I think it would be a better idea if a person who has the same taste in guitar will be my mentor. What do you think?
