When I stumble across sweep picking techniques by other people I'm always amazed on the approach of those. It's true for you too. I got a completely different sweeping motion, pick handeling, muting techniques with both hands and I even include string skipping in regular sweeps. I started out sweep picking with no lessons, nobody could teach me this and the internet weren't a big thing at the time...at least for me, so I came up with very unique techniques for this by trial and error, teaching it to myself. Always a pleasure to see the same result with very different approaches from very different people. Amazing video, keep it up 💜

A protip from my practice: struggle with a tricky part from a cover/something you composed? Make it into an excercise: record the backing track, transcribe the part in MIDI and program it in your DAW in increasing tempos. Of course it won't replace your technique excercises but it's still fun to master something that actually makes sense and which you can use right away

My god I am almost 40 learned chromatic exercises at 14. No one ever got it this specific. Got faster more endurance but always felt like I was hitting a low ceiling Bc I didn’t know these specifics. You either have a great teacher or you are one. Gave up guitar late 90’s and became a full time drummer Bc my guitar playing had hit a wall was driving me nuts. Now I am middle aged and getting over a lot obstacles Bc of the internet- small town local teachers only can get you so far that’s all we had in the 90’s. After 2 years it was hard for me to find anyone to learn anything from they all taught stuff I could figure out by ear. Finally starting to progress over the hump- technique is good but I am more concerned with finding my own sound at this age. I stopped wanting to play super fast when I got sick of listening to it, I think the day comes for us eventually. I still respect it but I want to learn to play more melodic played fast my whole life. I have seen prog guys very famous ones struggle to hold a bend for a few notes- that’s when I realized fast isn’t the only technique we have to practice. A guy who shreds effortless then bends and drops the note “shwek” shakes his head like an amateur would! I like metal, but prog metal ehh it’s getting stale and a lot of these guys are sloppy as hell just play so fast no one realizes. Slow down your liquid theaters listen carefully lol. I had a tape deck that slowed down held pitch in the 90’s there has to be an app like that right? It might be a sad day when you realize your heroes don’t hit every note and no one has any freaking idea- at least not on albums prior to the auto tune era. Certain players have always been sloppy and overrated though- Page maybe the most of all time but his riffs were still killer. Just don’t try to learn heartbreaker note for note without guessing some notes. Or do like me play the first few bars and the end make up the middle.

Interesting how his improvisation tips is almost close to the way Paul Gilbert writes his solos. He said he first thinks like a drummer and drums complex and interesting rhythms on the back of his guitar, then writes the rhythm down and ads tone and melody to each hit. After that you breathe in and out while playing that thing you just wrote and every time you breath in you hold whatever note you were playing and start shredding again when you breathe out so it becomes like natural musical phrasing that's alive and not just shredding craziness. BOOM, amazing solo done! So I can see why the rhythmical limitation is useful as it does the same interesting effect AND since you're rhythmically limited you have to compensate with more interesting melodies so it makes sense even from a psychological perspective... Amazing advice honestly, I'll try it tonight. 😊👍

Same. But after just 2 months of playing guitar, I am really getting better at not only the spider exercise, but also just reaching strings I couldn't reach previously. Keep trying and your fingers will be able to stretch out a little more. I couldn't play a C chord at all, but now I can.

i came back after watching the video this morning- i used to practice 1234s down a chromatic slightly differently since it was meant to be more of a picking hand exercise- however, after having had 3 ~10min each runs of the spider exercise i increased my 1234s speed by 20bpm when playing sixteenth notes! now, i dont think this is gonna keep improving like this, but just in one day of practice the improvement of my fretting hands' coordination increased incredibly! i totally recommend people amend their 1234s to include the 'spider walk' as it is so affectionately called- you really do feel something just clicking with your motor functions when doing it, but i did have to go down around 30bpm from my usual 1234 speed, but dont worry, its effective!

Just because you don’t play metal doesn’t mean you don’t need sweeping. Imagine playing some tasty blues licks then adding a quick sweep. Dynamics buddy! Creativity aswell! Lots can come from learning different techniques

Try cutting 1-2 cm off your finger length and still keep the wrist straight. The tilt is what lets my pinky reach.

unfortunately i wasn't aware that you need to have giant spidery octopus fingers in order to play guitar so i just spent several hundred dollars on an instrument that's physically impossible for me to play with little baby carrot fingers

Finally found a channel who showed how to hold fingers position in a right manner.Before I was confused that which way I should keep my fingers whether diagonal or straight.. Exercise 2 give me a breakthrough: improvising with a fixed rhythm allowed my mind to focus on other things and I found it much easier to jump all around the neck.

Amont of content is huge, though for a wanna-be-guitarist who just recently started learning it is too much :D Can u please explain the problem i face with excersice #1. 1) How does the thumb acts when index fingers goes down to the next string? Does it stay same, or follow index finger 2) How to keep 4-th fingr note ringing while moving 1st finger down? Do I have to use thumb as second component of fulcrum? or does pinkie provide enough pressure on fret by itself?
