Thank you for using that thumbnail of this little baby because it was one of the cutest chicks I'd ever seen. E17 and E18 are my babies but this little one was so precious! I'd been checking it out since it hatched. What a tragedy.

These chicks must have survival instincts from hatching or they don't make it. They must be aggressive to get fed and know they must stay under the parents to keep warm. If the chick wanders to the edge of the nest it will not be kept warm or fed. When its appetite is poor the parents assume something is wrong with it. It would not survive to adulthood. For whatever reason this chick isn't insisting on food and its trying to be kept warm. There was something likely wrong with it. The dad was trying but this chicks survival drive isn't there and for a bird of prey that's a sign of defect

It looks like mom is the most bird-brained eagle I’ve watched. This must be her first clutch. She cannot feed well, for starters. The chick’s crop was almost empty, and mom could not get food to it. That means no water. The food has the water they need to survive. On top of that, the mother pulled the chick away from the bowl and toward the edge of the nest. The chick’s instincts were driving it to the brooding parent; mom interrupted its hike to dad. By then the chick was very weak. This little one had no chance.

This baby had the cutest, fluffiest little face I'd ever seen. It was obviously healthy because it was incredibly strong. I pray this second egg doesnt hatch. These 2 shouldnt be parents. Isnt that the dad trying to make baby into nesting material at around 5:50 pm? Such a tragic loss. RIP little precious babe. 😭

tawny_one it's an unfortunate thing that happens with inexperienced eagle parents. It's a new female so she doesn't know what she should be doing. The baby having crawled out of the nest bowl only made it more difficult for them since they need to keep the egg and baby warm. Can't be in two places at once on the nest. So either the baby would have been lucky to crawl back into the nest bowl or it dies. Gotta hope that she does better next year or a new experienced female comes along.

I think the chick was blind or had some kind of physical problem. It looked like it was having trouble finding the mom's beak. Nature can be cruel, especially to those with a weakness.

Yes, I thought the same..They know when something is wrong. Very unusual behaviour if the chick was "normal". For starters it roamed out of the nest bowl.... They don't usually do that..

Very odd and tragic. At first, the chick was being fed, and all looked normal and well. Then the attack. What provoked it? Reading that this is a new mother and inexperienced? It was a beautiful eaglet and looked healthy. Very sad. I don't normally watch this nest.

I didn't realise Pa Berry stayed on with a new female! I have read mated pairs can and do split in case of consecutive unsuccessful seasons. All I could say would be pure speculation so I shall not venture any comments - the terrible sadness remains :(

I know, it seemed like the dad understood something should be done, and kept trying, but when the baby FINALLY turned around towards him...the dad took off! 🙄🤦🏻‍♀️ And they spent so much time tending to the egg while the baby was right next to them crying and struggling...it was unbearable watching the baby cry as it was dying right next to the mom while she sat there completely disinterested...just an awful, awful situation 😢😔

Tawny_one this nest sucks FYI. Always tragedy year after year and this new mom if were a human would be the type to collect welfare while letting her kids do what they wanted so long as she got an extra check at months end. I have a few amazing eagles nests you should check out.. not just bald eagles either. P.s. you're also ridiculously hot

Pa Berry has been a steady there. Ma Berry has had a leg/foot that sticks out sideways. Must be very painful, but she has persevered always! She and another eagle were in a fight. Ma Berry disappeared and the worst was thought of. Then, Ma Berry was spotted and is alive and well. The new female is very young and is with Pa Berry now.

This little one was so strong... and it was having to chase food from parents since birth. But s/he seemed to. I never saw it get fed very much. This "mother". Yikes. I watch SWFL harriet and M15, but always check out the other eagle cams. This poor little baby didnt stand a chance. 😭 dad seemed to try... but both seemed rather inexperienced in this case. I know papa bird isnt a newbie, but this... just tragic to hear that little one is such distress. Very sad. Do you think this female is the one that injured Papa berry's original mate? She seems rather savage.

Maybe the chick is blind. Doesnt seem to connect with the adult. The parent tries in vain to feed it but the food falls out of it's mouth. It wonders off away from the nest and rests on the edge. The parent did try but based on what I saw, the chick made no attempt to interact.

What I saw in this video is little B14 was clearly in distress after eating a bit and layed itself down, it appeared to be seizuring and mom didn't know how or what to do! Actually, their instincts would tell them, this one isn't going to make it, I've seen it happen before. Dad took care of business.

Yea, the abject rejection they showed towards it lead me to believe something underlying was wrong with the chick that they knew, which is why the prioritized the egg over the chick, and when the chick didn't remove itself, they pushed it far enough from the egg so it wouldn't mess with the potential other chick.

I’m no expert by any means, but when she picked up the baby in her beak she placed it near the food rather than near the nest bowl. Then she kept picking & pecking at the eaglet. As others have commented, she appears not to know how to care for the eaglet, but you would think the male would intervene. 😢

There was nothing wrong. A strong chick wandered out of the nest bole, wanting food, since it wasn't being brought to her/him. Then, as the video shows, unfortunate events followed.

***At A Glance*** The Eagle parent should've nudged eaglet next to the egg! I think there's a combination of issues/factors that may have caused it's death; rotten food with parasites, inadequate moisture intake, environmental and obvious neglect. If any of the viewers/commenters watched eagles, hawks, owls and other birds of prey on nests' videos as I have, they would've noticed leftover animal carcasses on the nests and in some footage you can clearly see flies circling over rotting flesh. I left out one factor that's more prevalent where nests are located near urban areas, rats and mice may have eaten rodenticide/poison which is deadly to all birds. Oops...there's another issue involving mink, weasels, squirrels and game birds, heavy metal "Lead" used in shotgun ammo called 'Bird Shot'-tiny round lead beads are deadly when consumed.
