hello 3 year old comment I'd still like to add: he also regrets killing the son of the lord he had to assassinate but it doesn't get blown out of proportion like in other anime where 1: the main character is such a shining knight he wouldn't have done it no matter the cost and 2: the main protagonist would grief about it for the rest of the story at any possible time it's a big deal for guts but he's not the type of character to be crushed by guilt

I love that Casca's Cuts all go for the seams of the armor as she isnt super powerful like guts. Add to the realism. Guts is the only one who can cut through armor.

And even then he isn't cutting. He is literally crushing his opponents with his massive sword. It just so happens that his club has enough of an edge to focus the force like a wedge. I really liked that attention to detail and it actually adds a reason for why Guts uses such a ridicules weapon.

One of the pet peeves i have with the movies is that it has torsos just flying left and right even when he uses it with just one hand, it doesn't feel as impactful and obscures why the change to the Dragonslayer was so important.

Before reading and watching Berserk I thought Guts was a stereotypical brute force character. He just swings his sword and everyone dies, and he says a cool phrase and thats it. Really only guts weapon has 100000% Armour penetration. you do see casca do a few grapples. at around 1:20 she grapples and cuts at the weak. a couple times guts does do some decapitations that could of been legit. but most of the time guts raw power seems to just be the key.

I've seen my fair share of anime, read some mangas, played a lot of video games, read many books, comics, watched a lot of american tv, and hundreds of movies. Considering his entire backstory, everything he's gone through, and all the insane shit he's done, including killing gods and demons, there is no question in my mind. Guts is the most hardcore and badass character I have ever come across.

I never appreciated exactly the kind of hardcore Guts was until i found out about The Idea of Evil, and what the afterlife has in store for him. It's one thing to fight against god himself when he is evil, but to not go mad at the thought of knowing that no matter how hard you struggle and push against destiny, you *will* suffer for eternity and there is nothing you can do about it. The fact that he hasn't lost the plot, knowing his and everyone elses souls are booked for hell makes me wonder how he can even move, with his planet sized balls weighing him down.

It isn't so depressing as you make it sound with those quotes. Miura truly enjoyed his work and said that if he didn't think everything about manga was fun, then he wouldn't have worked on Berserk for 30+ years. Also, I'm dubious that those quotes are completely accurate as you can't always get the exact intention when you translate Japanese into English. Miura-sensei was overall a happy man, so there's no need to feel sad as though he lived a miserable life 🙂

We don't know yet whether what happened to his heart was sudden or if he knew ahead of time, but I think he was an exception to the usual rule of mangaka living terrible lives. We should all be aware of how awful the manga and anime industries most certainly are, but it seems like overall Miura enjoyed his work and took his time to make sure his art was to his satisfaction before publishing, thus the hiatuses. He didn't let his editors rule his work. One of his big hiatuses was due to the work on Berserk transitioning to digital and he had to learn the new system. That was around volume 38.

But Guts gets so big, heavy and strong that he uses it like a normal greatsword (its even stated at points that he doesn't lose anywhere near the speed that he should) and against a mob of mooks like this he would just slash it around taking out half a dozen pretty effortlessly. His size and armor would stop any arrows and no-one with half a brain would even try to get past his strike range. The dragon slayer is so heavy with so much inertia that it never gets stuck or really even slow down; it would be a different looking fight but I doubt he would even take a single hit.

In reality a 6ft+ sword would be basically useless for anyone less than about 8 foot tall as it would just get stuck in the ground and have an enormous gap where guarding and defending would be impossible. I love two moments from this clip in specific for two different reasons, I love the part when he tells them he'll crack their skulls open by dawn, because you can see he's using intimidation to cause them to fight worse, which is both extremely smart when out numbered tactically and badass, and the ending scene where he is found quietly sitting amongst the dead army against a tree, this scene really enforces an artistic point of view on how he's the lone stoic survivor of a long vicious battle, that turned into a bloody yet serene beautiful morning with forest animals chirping away, really gives it a "beauty of destruction" feeling
