A side note. There actually was a medieval German knight who used a mechanical prosthetic hand (his right hand). Led a rather bravado life as a mercenary and poet. Now here’s the kicker, his name was Gottfried von Berlichingen or also known as Gotz the Iron Hand.

@@jeremycarnes1656he’s not. Miura learned about Göetz after he had already started Berserk. He even said it was a strange coincidence when he learned about him. Miura’s always been super open about his influences and the only time he talks about this (afaik) is in an interview where he talks about discovering Göetz.

One thing that also makes it Grim Dark is that Griffith from the very start was destined to become a God Hand member. He was given the Behelit by one of the other God Hand members disguised as a trinket salesman, and then things like the initial fight with Zodd and other things show that the God Hand had always planned to push Griffith through slightly, and not so slightly guided actions, towards becoming one of them.

Favorite series of all time and in any media. Struggle on fellow strugglers. Side note: Berserk has such a great time doing visual stortytelling thanks to Miura’s obsessive nature with his artwork. One of my favorite pictures is a panel someone made of Guts’ eyes throughout the story and you can actually see where he is on his journey of growth and healing based on his eyes alone.

Can one escape their fate? Do waves only build to crash and die? Can what was broken truly be mended? Every action has its consequence and as such is the rule of causality in berserk. Whether to struggle against the odds for those meant for sacrifice… or live as monsters who pretend to be gods… there will and always shall be a cause to their effects. What seems as evil winning is not necessarily true, just as seeing the good suffer, as the ultimate outcome. Heed the words of skull knight and rise above your morality and mortality. For it is when we shatter the reigns of causality that humanity will be free of the dreaded godhand.

Guts is traumatized and spends the entire Black Swordsman arc and half of Conviction in a psychotic haze. He kills everything and anything and is so wholly fixated on revenge that he forgets about protecting Casca and is gone when Godo dies. For a long time Guts has broken with reality. No one is safe ftom him, save for his rare moments of clarity when you see that he's pushing everyone away not just because he doesn't want anyone to get hurt....but he feels that it's HIS fault the Band Of The Hawk, and most importantly Casca, have been destroyed. Early post-Eclipse Guts is a huge tornado of severe PTSD, survivor's guilt, and acute self-hatred. He's tragic. He's about as grim and dark as it gets.
@Beastlango8 ай бұрын
@@jeremycarnes1656 he is hell bent on revenge, but he doesn’t murder innocent people on purpose. The whole conviction arc happens from him killing demons that are transformed children but he didn’t have a choice and did know it at first ether. The knight think he’s a murders but he wasn’t. If you want real grim dark read the prince of thrones trilogy, nothing like guts. Just a war monger and murdering tyrant.
