Baron Balzac aka "Ballsack" is probably just taking the French surname of Balzac or Balsac (lol), Honoré de Balzac being the most famous "Ballsack" of them all. Like Kentaro Miura who died at a young 54 years, Honoré lived for 51 years. Both men kept working till they died, for Miura for his dark fantasy, Balzac in his literature was trying to capture French society post Napoléon France 1815-1848 with La Comédie humaine

This game fascinates me as an English speaking Berserk fan because it's one of, if not the first piece of Berserk media to be localized; the '97 anime was dubbed in 2002, so what we're seeing is the earliest attempt at translating Berserk. From the wonky new title (why Sword of the Berserk?), to the weird naming inconsistencies like Gatsu, to even the slightly off way characters speak (Guts repeatedly refers to Casca as "My love" which isn't how Guts talks in literally anything else), I kinda think it's interesting to look at as the first attempt at localizing these characters. Is it good? Hell no. But it's cool to observe from a modern lens.

Yeah, Berserk was localized in parts of Europe and Asia during the 1990s but was unknown in North America when Sword of the Berserk was released. The anime dub is what led to a full localization.

This was the first piece of Berserk media translated into English well before the 1997 anime was dubbed in 2002 followed by Dark Horse Comics' official translation of the manga. I discovered it well after I saw the 1997 anime and 2012-13 Golden Age Arc trilogy on KZbin.

A simple combo a lot of people don't realize is holding down the A button until Guts goes into a stance. If you hold down the A button for a second, wait for the stance, the following attack for the sword goes through walls. The second of wait does leave Guts open for attack and damage, but the roundabout swing does a lot of damage and pushes enemies back.

Balzac's voice actor, Earl Boen died in 2023. He also voiced Lechuck in Monkey Island and King Terenas in World of Warcraft. One of the greats.

Same here. I've always found stock art using 3D renders pretty off putting (and lazy considering rigging and such makes it easy), even more so with early 2000's CG. 3D models don't translate well to static images imom

I had a crappy used copy without a cover from gamestop that was $4, and I had a few dreamcasts. There was this short period where used dreamcasts were so cheap and the first one I got was a japanese one so I went back and bought a US one. I had a spindle full of burned games on CD. like a stack of 40 games. How was this 20 years ago

@@timgimmy609 Prolly Zelda ocarina of time. I think I recall Links sword bouncing off walls if you attacked them. Besides I think Miyazaki was just trying to make Dark Souls realistic and challenging by making it so that you cant spam attacks in tight hallways.

Even on Google, the Reddit for this particular one is the first result. I don't know if the other ones got full season recreations of the 97 anime in mind, but that's the one I hinted at.

The Dreamcast actually did have copy protection for games, the pirated copies exploit a pretty glaring flaw in music CD's playback, basically they fool the console into thinking it is running an interactive CD menu which for some reason have full access to run any kind of program.

Everyone prefers FEAR 1 because of the AI, but I found early on if you just hide around a corner, you can just pick them off as they round the corner. That and the better stage variety and iron sights are why I prefer 2. Either way, they're both still better than most (non-indie) shooters today.

FEAR 2 tried to be a dumb Call of Duty clone while stripping out everything that made the first game appealing and actually good. And gameplay was actually worse, the AI was really dumb (first game gets lauded for its good AI, the sequel somehow has worse AI than a Call of Duty game) and the guns felt and sounded like shit (unlike in the first game).

So I grew up with this game and I love it and just recently played through it again after beating it on hard mode. The unlockables mentioned cannot all be unlocked by beating the game on hard, so if like me you enjoy a challenge when playing, just know that you'll have to go back and beat the game on easy as well. However with the nolimit you've unlocked by beating on hard mode the game then seems more like the anime and enemies now die off quickly whether using fists, crossbow, knives, bombs, sword, or hand cannon. It's a great game and tells the story of what happens "literally" between the 2016 anime and 2017. The controls leave a lot to desired for several gamers but once you adapt to it the game becomes a lot of fun. If you’re a fan of Berserk definitely give it a try.

S1&2 were pretty great. S3 was sloooow and weird. S4's good. Haven't watched Nocturne. I actually wish there was MORE fanservice. Like barely any of the generic monsters are from the games, and the music could be more lively.

This was one of the first games I imported from the US after I got my region-mod chip installed. It was never released here in Germany, because back then, officials were very picky about violence in games. I really loved it, despite all the jank.

The legendary Earl Boen as Balzac, rip. Probably best known for playing the Psychiatrist in the first 3 Terminator movies, Demon Pirate LeChuck in all Monkey Island games aside from Return, and who took over from Tony Jay after he died for WoW's narrator.

Yeah, the reason why so many of the voice actors from early dubbed Konami games are in this is the voice director is Kris Zimmerman(-Salter), who voice directed all the Metal Gear English dubs, a ton of video games from Spider-Man to Onimusha and....Regular Show.

I must be one of the few that think the dubbing company ALMOST understood the assignment. Even the "My Love" bit, which isn't how Guts normally talks, but I could see him dropping it after SO long and coming SO close to one of the things he wanted. It honestly broke me all over again. Heck I could call this game "almost understanding the assignment" but not quite there. Clearly, the feedback was heard which led to the PS2 second attempt which is the greatest Berserk game ever made...and probably ever will be made at this point in time. Also a shame that some of these Seinen haven't been getting game adaptations. What are the chances of a Vinland Saga game or especially a Golden Kamuy game? So much potential for one.

The only Berserk game i've played is Soulstice. Alright, has some Berserk *inspirations* (protagonist's armor and weapon, ghostly companion, grim slaughtered ruined city full of otherworldly demons), but also from the likes of Claymore or so i've heard. Despite the name it's more like a DMC/Bayonetta/Darksiders-type game. Has rough points but it's still become one of my favourites in the genre. Can recommend. Me aside, thank you for going the effort to still make these videos. They're fun and good stuff with interesting things to mention.

I really love this game. It's jank for sure, but it has a lot of charm and I actually like the old school late 90s veteran voice acting. Michael Bell, Tony Jay, there's enough talent there for me to overlook some wonky names, especially since this game came out before both the manga or the anime had any officially localized material in North America. The Zodd fight is hard as hell though, lol.

This was a blind buy for me. Just saw it on the shelf back in 2000 and bought it. Wasn't familiar with the source material but it looked cool and it ended up being my favorite Dreamcast game. I also went on to watch the anime and loved it too. Easily one of the greatest blind buys of my life. This WAS a winner at the start. Saying otherwise sounds stupid to me.

What a time it was, before anime games came off the conveyor belt of same engine, same gameplay laziness, Sword of the Berserk, Fist of the North Star PS1, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Dragon Ball Z Budokai 1, Vampire Hunter D and more, all games that tried to follow the story note for note, with crazy good graphics for the time, awesome gameplay, soundtracks EVERYTHING...ahhh I miss when anime games weren't all arena fighter types with cutscenes that are just static pictures of a character for dialogue..😢

I like this Berserk game the most of the three, it's my favourite Dreamcast game I've played so far too (this is because I'm catching up on a lot of things very slowly) it has the most charm imo. Musou has so many issues and the PS2 game has a few levels that drag on unfortunately. [Flowers of Oblivion] just feels the most consistent with a beautiful soundtrack too
