Tbh Conviction arc is actually one of my favorite because it's the arc where the tone starts to shift. Everyone always complaining how Berserk ended up being more light hearted but I welcome the tonal shift. These moments didn't came up from nowhere, Guts earned these lighthearted moments after all the shit he's gone through.
@Tygermite2 жыл бұрын
Exactly. Besides, Berserk has always been about there being a silver lining despite how hard and tough things are. It's not 100% dark nightmare fuel stuff that's all about making the protagonist suffer as much as possible. In about 3% of those moments, it always tries to give us hope that things will get better and the well-earned rest is definitely needed for Guts.

I think that Guts is trying to imply that by praying your basically ensuring that your hands are tied, or “closed” by hoping that God will help you. I understood Nina as someone who was envious of the strength and character of others, but in a way that made her resent it. It's why she professed to dislike Luca despite. Like how others grow bitter and envious over wealth. Luca distributed wealth, but there'll always be a disparity of character.
@agregs303 жыл бұрын
Nina is an interesting character to me because of the hate she gets and that's the point imo. We dislike character flaws of weakness, cowardice, and conformity because it reflects those flaws on ourselves that we may have. Act of courage can inspire us but also deflate us when one is still bound by fear, so I get why she spites Luca. However that is just more self projection of her own self loathing. Reminds me of Raki from Claymore but even weaker. We will see if see gets any character growth because those developments are usually the most satisfying when starting so low.

At 2:32:42 that “thing” is called a “Man-Catcher”. They were often used in battle to capture enemy commanders and noblemen by dragging them off of their horses and pinning them to the ground. It’s rarely ever considered in media, but a lot of the time, knights could be worth a nice sum to whoever captured them.

She was absolutely scared of the situation (which is completely understandable) so she resorted to what she knew. However, Guts spurs her into fighting. It's not just Guts going "shut up and fight" but rather Farnese beginning to understand that she has to take action into her own hands if she wants to survive or just live a life of her own.

He stops after hours of working most of the tree down. The "don't pray" line actually kind of harkens to other Christian scripture that says God will help you if you help yourself. It speaks to me personally as a slap in the face to ultra-piety and is a guiding word on how to live in the balance between doubting God and meaningless prayer. In my eyes to live perfectly by the word of God is to live somewhere between those things at all times.
@andrecherry23473 жыл бұрын
Actually, my friend, the saying "God helps those who help themselves" isn't in the Bible at all. It's a quote coined by Ben Franklin. What the Christian Scriptures actually say is this: "Whoever calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved" (Romans 10:19) "Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in Him" (Psalm 34:8) " "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your path" (Proverbs 3:5-6) "Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose hope the Lord is" (Jeremiah 17:7) "As a father shows compassion to his children, so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear Him [those who worship Him with awe-filled respectand deepest reverence]... For He knows our frame and remembers that we are dust." (Psalm 103:13-14) God listens to the prayers of His children, and beckons mankind to trust in Him and turn to Him. God helps us because He loves us, and we can't help ourselves.

Honestly thanks a lot for doing this. First of all is truly well done I was able to absorb the story really well, almost better than going through it all alone hearing your perspective brought very needed contemplation as well as levity at moment. You really did a remarkable job and many honestly intrigued people about berserk who can’t get the manga well we are able to finally go through the story in a coherent way thanks to you.. by far faaar my favorite compendium of Berzerk

finally finsihed. Yeah keep a good balance between analyse and read along. That's exactly why I want to watch your video to Berserk so bad. Like in this video. There's no better way to show us why you love Berserk so badly. You potray everything in a way so that I basically feel what you feel. Or I feel what I think you feel. It keeps it engaging. The story, your narration, your presentation .. all of thiose things don't let me stop watching even if I wanna to (because of headaches, needing to sleep. etc.) I'm thankful you made this series and put the effort in!

This is my favourite arc and it’s a shame it never gets adapted. Probably because more than any arc it shows the effect of the twisted world on normal people. Jill is a very relatable character.

The Conviction arc is one of the great peaks in a series of almost nothing but great peaks. I've been an Update Struggler for years now and I love the Read Along style of this latest episode, I was pausing on every panel. Also, what are the chances you'll ever make a Spotify playlist out of the Berserk video song choices? Your taste in music is killer.

Only seen the movies before this series and have never really read any manga throughout my life, but I've been absolutely PLOWING through this series, you're commentary, music choice, humor, analysis, and narration mixed with the absolutely astounding story and artwork of Berserk have been absolutely fucking amazing man. So much so that I was crushed, no, devastated to see there isn't a part 4 yet. Needless to say I'm looking forward to it with baited breathe man, please do keep it up this shit is incredible!!

I think that interpreting Miura as anti-Christian is hyperbolic, and interpreting him as Marxist is just profoundly incorrect. In common with a lot of Japanese writers, I think he just saw Christianity as a curiosity, and included a religion somewhat similar to it only in the capacity that it was appropriate to the kind of setting he had made. He certainly doesn't completely condemn religion. As for calling him Marxist, that's ludicrous. Guts is the most Byronic, self-actualized of heroes, and vehemently fights against authoritarianism and Griffith's collectivist ambitions. I would say he was far more anti-collectivist even than I am.
@mysteryman49153 жыл бұрын
I think its a bit if a kneejerk reaction for people to just see religion in stories and think “Religion=bad” because… to be fair, it is done very frequently. Unfortunately most religious conflicts in fiction revolve around “religion good vs religion bad”. Personally, for my garbage tier personal writing, I decided to make one of my characters a practicing catholic because i thought it would be interesting for the character and had an SJW blow a screw loose one me claiming I was one, to which I had to politely inform them I was not.

Miura has stated in interviews he wanted to explore the idea of fanaticism in context of religion due to the sarin gas attacks by Aum Shinrikyo that took place in Tokyo metro in 1995. I would say he was anti-fanaticist, if anything.
@chrisscott30713 жыл бұрын
Agreed. The point I got from this arc was that sitting around doing nothing and just praying isn't the solution even alot of religious people get this wrong. You are supposed to struggle and actually face your hardship and burden the same way guts does.
@runningcommentary21253 жыл бұрын
Honestly I think the fanatical evil Church in Berserk is one of the more sympathetic ones found in anime and manga. The heretics they persecute are a sadistic cannibal cult, Mozgus dies trying to save hundreds of people and Azan seems like a pretty decent bloke.

So I haven’t read Berserk since way before becoming a parent a few months ago. Wanted to reacquaint myself with the specifics. Needless to say this shit hits on a totally different level when you have a kid, especially Jill’s story. Makes you almost physically ill but it’s so well done that you understand that it has to be so awful at times to make the impact Miura intended. Love the summary! Never heard “apostle” pronounced like that 😆 But for real, I respect the effort put into this video! I honestly appreciate the work and dedication put into a story and characters you obviously love, so thank you! Your summary/analysis has revealed so many deeper elements to me that make this work more meaningful and enjoyable. Well done!

AMAZING arc. For me it is the peak of Berserk, so many moments and meaning behind the scenes. The turning point for Guts and also the introduction of the new crew. THE INSANITY of everything that happened and it is much more to come, hope to see you cover the next arcs as well since I listened to this from start to end and your commentary is hilarious and entertaining.

This series has followed me through my fair share of stuff in life, and even now it does. Having recently found your videos covering the whole saga, I'd like to thank you not just as a fellow fan but a person who tries to take as much as possible from this story - and Guts' adventures, what messages the author once wrote across all the masterfully crafted artwork in his pages. These videos too, being a journey that takes me back to all of it, start to finish, have brought me important thoughts and ways of dealing with them as the days pass. They've followed me for precious hours on the side, while I write or practice or well, simply watch them. Thank you, once more, for all the hard work. I'm sure it has helped or brightened the day of many more "strugglers" out there!
