it's kinda funny seeing the gar having to maneuver slowly around the fish you throw, so they can catch them. being so large makes it harder for them to get the food quickly, unlike the bass and Tom that just slide along and get everything effortlessly.

Have you considered supplementing with pellets? Seems hard to get them enough food. That’s a lot of work!

@zyxwfish Pellets don’t have the same nutrients as the kind of food wild fish like bass, gar, catfish, etc. would eat. They also wouldn’t grow as fast, or show no interest in eating pellets at all.

Gar are some of the easiest fish to keep alive. Just make sure the pump you get circulates the water body at least 2x per hour. So if the pond is 1000 gallons, get a pump that flows at least 2000gph. There are a lot of good koi pond filters that do a great job. The more filtration the better.

The gar don’t like the cold so they will lay on the bottom and eat a lot less. The bass and catfish will be more sluggish but aren’t as affected.

@ you should secure your yard though, against predators and other escape attempts or threats. I only had good luck with about 75% of turtles I ever had put in my private ponds, best of luck. Love the content 🖤

They can definitely be intimidating but are actually very docile. I was scared of handling them at first but years of doing it helps a lot. I plan to offer guided alligator gar fishing trips next year and will show people how to handle them carefully.
