Beryl lashes Texas, bringing high winds, heavy rain and flooding

Beryl hit the coast of Texas as a Category 1 storm with high winds and waves. It caused major flooding as it moved inland as a tropical storm. Strong wind gusts caused trees to fall and knocked out power for more than a million people. NBC News' Kathy Park and Bill Karins report.

katrina did most of its damage and destruction when it was a category 1-2 hurricane and losing strength over new orleans. it had weakened significantly by the time it reached the southern part of the city, where most of hte fatalities occured. there were hardly any hurricane force winds recorded in the city. that didn't matter. the levees broke and the city flooded with 10-20 feet of storm surge. basically the wind pushed 10-20 feet of additional water into the city on top of the typical lunar tide. the remnants of these hurricanes can drop 5-10 inches of rain in a day.

Tbf, Beryl was intensifying as it made landfall and intensifying storms can pack a stronger punch than storms that are "stonger" but weakening or maintaining strength up to landfall. The storm was also very impressive structurally for just a CAT 1 as well with a clear defined eye and eyewall at landfall.
