As a Turk, I love the fact that Greek and Turkish food are very similar, and I am so tired of the "food origin" conflict between us, why does it even matter who made a dish first? Culture is not a competition, it's a reflection of us sharing the same space for centuries. This similarity gives me a sense of fraternity, it just shows that we enjoy the same tastes and if we share a meal, it will be familiar and lovely. Like, I would eat everything in this video without hesitation because I know these dishes, and I already love them. This is wonderful, we should be celebrating this! Anyway, great video Beryl, as always.💕

There is: mediterranian food/diet. I just find it funny (as a muslim from bosnia) how greeks call that eggplant dish a greek dish, considering the name "Imam" is the name for the funktion like an islamic preast (guides a prayer in a mosque, preaches in the mosque on friday)...I mean...the answer is in the name...but yeah...some things will never change I guess, things like greek and turk rivalry.
@Dizikolik3

@@britvica yeah, why claim something as greek when it's literally obvious that the origin is definitely not theirs🙄 that's why all the rivalry originates from which is really sad. Just say mediterranean and everyone will be happy and this nonesense will stop

@@britvica I am in total agreement with the OP. I am tired of the repetitive food origin online debates and I wish people would just let it go and just enjoy the food! Having said that, to give some insight on the naming aspect, we were under Turkish oppression for 400 years. Putting that in terms of generations (according to wikipedia, a generation is 20-30 years so let's take the average of 25), that's 16 generations! Naturally, after 4 centuries we kept a few Turkish words.

Unfortunately the greek cousine is not really represented well outside the country😂. There are tons of fantastic dishes- most vegetarian and with legumes, lots of fish and seafood- but only a handfull meat dishes are well known abroad. They are tasty too- but the greek diet has so much more to offer! And is very healthy too😊

Americans are great for picking out the least healthy and most familiar dishes from any cuisine's menu, making it more "American" (aka bland, uninspired) and convincing the folks back home that's traditional. Good business people from other countries open restaurants in America and change their style to serve food more appealing to Americans. They might have the same ingredients, but change proportions, or serve daily food that is traditionally served only on special occasions in their own country. It's sad.

Thank you for featuring these dishes! As a Greek American, I feel like Greek restaurants here in the US are way too meat heavy when Greeks generally eat much more vegetarian dishes. Seafood is something we do eat a lot more of than the average American as it is much cheaper in Greece. Also we definitely don't eat pita bread unless we have gyro or souvlaki, and those are fast food. I always found it funny to see gyro on restaurant menus here in the US.

You can make the eggplant dish with minced mean as well!Also that Giouvetsi looks a bit dry but you can find different variations of it.We typically give color to the meat(typically beef) on the stove top,then remove it and add lots of onions,garlic,carrots,bay leaves,tomato paste,tomato sauce,oregano,pepper corns,salt and peper and some water and then add the meat back in to cook it for like 2 hours.When its done cooking (kinda),we put olive oil in a different pot/pan and cook the orzo till it turns golden(it should be uncooked aka dry pasta).Then we add everything itno a huge oval dutch oven(or even a tray) and cover with a li or parchment paper and cook in the oven for like an hour till it looks saucy (like rizzoto) but not super dry.Also we check if it need some more water if the orzo isnt cooked.I guess you can try and make it with other small pasta but you have to follow the exact same steps,to fry the pasta in oil.That prevets it from turning into a block and sticking together in the oven.In my household we add leaks as well and red wine and like 6-8 onions cut in half moon shape for like 1,5kg of meat.It takes some time to make but the result is amazing!

Try doing Spetzofai, its a very simple Greek dish , sausage par fried in olive oil, left to cool then cut into inch pieces , reserve oil. Twice the amount of green peppers, long types, as found in Mediterrean food shops, ( Greek , Turkish, Etc, ) cut into inches again , sauteed till softened, add all including the olive oil into a casserole , add tinned chopped tomatoes to cover, passata to assist ,. Bring to a slow simmer for 1 to 2 hours ( slow cooker even better, over night), turn off , leave to next day . Reheat to warm hot, serve with lots of fresh bread , mezedakia, chilled Retsina , and most of all good company. Basically its a autumnal dish , not high class , but for good friends

As a European (Brit) who has been to Greece many times, I think that Greek food only works well when it is simple. Don't mess around with it - it should be plain, and never sophisticated (in a way, it is like British food - keep it simple). A simple Greek salad in the afternoon sunshine on a Greek island has to be perfection.

Yesss gigantes are so good! They were my only dinner option for a week in corfu and I don't prefer tomatoes so they weren't my fave by the end of the trip, but the first time I had them? Perfection.

The way you are that lamb shank is wild!! We always use forks/pull it off the bone. A lamb episode might be good. We eat alot of lamb in Australia. They even have lamb adds to try to get us to eat more of it.

I was in Greece for my honeymoon in February and we ate so much amazing food! The best things we ate was the amazing seafood in Volos (taramosalata, fried cuttlefish, grilled octopus), all the amazing cheeses (feta of course but also kefalotiri and mezythra) in Athens and Thessaloniki, gemista (stuffed vegetables) in Kalambaka, and so many good wines. And I had horta like every day lol, sometimes twice a day. And we had gigantes plaki at least once. The things that surprised me most about Greek food was that while they eat a lot of bread, it's almost never pita. They mostly seem to have loaf breads, and they're different every time! That, and the "flaming cheese" many North Americans associate with Greek restaurants is Not A Thing there; apparently saganaki on fire was invented by a Greek immigrant restaurateur in Chicago in the 1980s or something.

Exactly you’ll only ever see that in Greece if the owners had worked in the restaurant business in the US or Canada and local Greeks will look curious as to what the dish is lol

OMG I have looked for years for the name of that desert! I visited Greece almost 10 years ago and we had it at a tiny restaurant, and absolutely loved it! It was complementary, so we didn't know what it was called, and I haven't been able to find it since. This is why I love this series!
