One of the scenes from the film The Sky Crawlers, recreated in Besiege. This project took almost 2 years, between graduating from university, and procrastinating due to burnout.

It’s so great to know there are people that remember the Sky Crawlers. I ended up playing through the Wii game (by Project Aces of Ace Combat fame) like 4 times. Added quite a bit of context being a prequel as the kildren start getting introduced.

​@@ridleyscurry2480 This is an alternate universe, where the populace is at peace, but to ease the tension accustomed to war and aggression, Two private companies are contracted to engage in combat operations. So that both companies don't use human lives, they Genetically engineer clones known as "Kildren," these clones will eternally stay in adolescence, and can't die unless killed in battle. During the movie, there are two companies. Rostock which is based mainly in Europe, and Lautern based mainly in Canada and little in the Northern Part of the United States. The Protagonist faction is Rostock, where we get introduced to the main character. ( The single engined pusher fighters/ the six-engined bomber). During the video/battle, Several Rostock bomber squadrons are tasked to bomb Lautern's facilities and runways. (Lautern is the twin-engined pusher fighters) Also Several fighter squadrons are tasked to defend the said bomber group, which the main character is helping to defend. But as you can see during the video the bomber group takes heavy damage and fails with its bombing mission. So in the end you're supposed to root for the Attacking Forces since they are the good guys, in the movie. The level of detail is impressive and i really dont know such a thing is possible on besiege. Sky crawler is my favourite movie in terms of planes, it is unparaleled in terms of dogfight scenes even though it is not 100% realistic. Anyway big kudos to you for making such a great thing!

Those planes were based on real designs. The pusher prop fighters are based on the Curtis-Wright XP-55 Ascender and the big bombers look like the Northrop YB-49. They were just concept aircraft and didn’t make it past the prototype flights for world war 2

I'm super late to this, but the pushers are actually based on the J7W1 Shinden, a late war Japanese prototype. Aside from a few minor changes, it's nearly 1:1.

​@@alesiaaisela2653 mainly switching to in-line engine and counterprop, which would probably help with massive vibration problems shinden had during those few test flights they managed to conduct (honestly looking on the rig of engine and elongated shaft and reductor, just changing that would help, it's not thought out well), and moving guns on bottom, which is nonsense, since spent casing would be falling into props and damaging it - that's why shinden had capturing of them (and thus just 60 rounds per gun, it really was just pure-born interceptor against bombers).

Xp-55 didn't made it further because it was crap. They could solve the controllability, so it was almost unflyable. Another issue (not for this one aircraft) was engine, originally they designed it for 24 cylinder one with rows into H, but it was scrapped for reliability issues Allison couldn't fix, so it ended up with weaker standard v12. Regarding the bomber, it came too late. Ww2 was ending and era of jet engines was starting. So no-one was willing to adopt new piston powered aircraft when those in service were still good, and reworked for jet engines it had so horrendous fuel consumption it wasn't really fullfil it's job of long range bomber. I don't feel too sorry for ascender, it wasn't good aircraft and wasn't really redeemable, but poor YB-49, that one didn't deserved it...

@depressedTrent pulling from distant J7W1 documentation memories (sadly don't have that document set anymore.) They actually solved the vibration problem by installing cotton(?) Baffles along the drive shaft to help with the issue. If I remember correctly, this was noted to have actually worked. The J7W1 is just kind of a mess, though, as much as I love it. It was always intended to be a jet, and it really shows with all the issues the prop version encountered.

Truly impressive, my respect, you did great job with the whole scene. :) By the way, is that A-90 without tail engine on your banner/profile picture? (Did you know that ekranoplans are about to have come back, this time for real? USA plans to replace their strategic airlifters with them - even if those are gonna be more of a hybrid, one of requirements is reach of 3000 m altitude at times, not something I expected... Some of the propositions looks quite wild...)

Yeah its an ekranoplan on my banner. They're a really interesting niche within aviation, but I think their era has ended. I doubt the US would be willing to invest in another largely untested area of aviation, while planes like the C-17 and C-130 do the job just fine

@@AITF045 the issue is, that those aircrafts are morally obsolete and don't really offer much more space for further development, they're also aging and keeping them operational is getting increasingly more expensive (having bunch of different versions/blocks of them in service at the same time doesn't help with logistics). There is also demand on increase of efficiency beyond of what you can squeeze from conventional design. Given how entire aerospace industry is shifting to radically different designs from aircrafts as we know them right now, it doesn't really gonna matter to USA what new design they'll throw money on (not mentioning they kinda NEED to throw them on something, otherwise Congress will give less money on military next year). Ekranoplans aren't even the craziest thing they go for (and that one is already going on), they also want VTOL in weight category of C-130, which is gonna be more challenging, as they also want it to be high speed (relatively speaking) and long range, so probably tiltrotor. Their slowly working on complete replacement of their transport capabilities, starting with recently selecting V-280 as replacement for Blackhawks and issuing specs for other categories as mentioned. (Also keep on mind that those replacements are planned to come in like ten twenty years, any aircraft development goes for so long that it needs to be started basically as soon as you put into service your current stuff to have it ready when needed (they forgor with replacement for AWACS so they had to go for acquisition of similar system recently developed for Britain, because standalone replacement wouldn't be ready in time), jsf program resulting in f-35 started in 90', so until those requested ekranoplans are gonna be ready, Globemasters and Galaxies are gonna be ready for retirement)
