Solid review Ben and lovely sample images. Great comparisons too, especially considering how difficult it is for consistency when testing multiple lenses on the same tiny target. Did you test the Canon with an extender? Be interesting to see if it still had the edge over the two 'native' 2:1 lenses.

Thanks Gordon, I appreciate the kinds words and you know how much work goes into reviewing lenses. Using a 100mm on an extender would be an interesting comparison, as in theory there should be no loss of optical quality only a reduction in light once you add the extension tube, and the Canon was already performing very well. I guess you are paying for convenience a little with the 2x inside the lens when compared to a versatile 100mm macro with an extension tube.

Great review and some stunning photos. I like Gordon's thought of the Canon with an extender.

An interesting review Ben and enjoyed learning some aspects of macro photography that I didn't know about. Was wondering if you have ever delved black and white fine art macro as looking at the macro section on your website, I only see colour images hence the question?

It’s. A good question Jim, and as witnessed on my website I think all of my macro shots (other than a few this year shot in Infrared) I do tend to keep the images in colour. But I don’t have any answer why! I shall experiment some more!

I have had the Sony 90mm f2.8 G Lens since it came out and is an excellent lens for Sony owners. Its probably same or slightly larger then your longest of the three lenses here. Excellent sharpness plus easy change from auto to manual by pushing barrel to and fro. Also makes a great portrait lens. Thanks for sharing.

MP-E 65. 1-5x. Exposure changes a lot. I'd rather the Olympus 60mm or OM Systems 90mm macro lens on my OM-5, Both have IS, both support AF and focus bracketting. This seams to be the gear of choice for those chasing peacock spiders.

They all performed well though, didn’t they. Lenses have really come along way, options are good!
