The problem with this test is that when you're hunting small game, you're not shooting through inches of flesh. You very quickly hit denser material, including bone, which causes very different pellet deformation to that indicated by ballistic gel.

I've always thought that so called 'hunting' pellets are not much more than a gimmick. For me, the number one priority for any pellet being used on live quarry is accuracy. People comment about over penetration and not all of the energy from a pellet being imparted to a target as a result. Personally, I've never seen a rabbit walk away from a shot that puts a hole in its head from one side right through to the other.
@flow57184 жыл бұрын
I feel the same, and would go with the JSB Exact's. The humane way is to put the pellet right in the brain, I wouldn't take a shot if I wasn't 100% sure of that. And no small or even medium quarry can walk away from that.
@greekveteran27153 жыл бұрын
@@flow5718 Can you please help me sir? I want to get a Weihrauch. Will a Weirauch hw80 with 22 cal, kill a rabbit if the pellet hits the body? I can only use open sights, scopes are not allowed here.. Will the hw80 kill if I miss the head and hit the body, or choose the HW95 with 177, which it will still be without a scope (only open sights). Which one would be better?
@flow57183 жыл бұрын
@@greekveteran2715 Definitely go with the 22 cal for hunting, a 177 has to be spot on in the brain for it to do its job, a 22 is more forgiving, and does body shots much better but you still have to get the heart or lungs. And it does increase the animal's suffering as it won't be insta killed. Practice until you can hit a coin from 10 yards away 9 times out of 10, learn the anatomy of the animal and read hunting forums for advice on where to place the shot. You can get pretty good with an open sight under 10 yards but above that, it just doesn't offer the level of accuracy I prefer. The rules around scopes are vague at best, so you can catch a combo deal sometimes from a manufacturer or reseller, it depends. In most places with scope restriction they're not allowed to sell a rifle with a scope, but they're allowed to sell it separately, so look for combo deals or sellers specializing in just scopes and accessories. But starting out, I'd recommend practicing your iron sights and then moving onto peep sight for slightly better accuracy. Once you've mastered those, move to scopes. It's a big change that.

I'd like to say this was a very well made video and informative. Also I appreciate the fact that this isn't sponsored which could add bias. I should also add I'm in the US. I have the Crosman Venom Dusk pellet rifle and would usually just target shoot with it. The pellets I used were the Beeman Silver arrows at 11.57 grains. I haven't chronographed it but it is probably 900+ FPS. I decided I'd like to go squirrel hunting and I wanted to find a pellet that wouldn't over penetrate and pass through. I also wanted good expansion. After researching on forums and by watching videos like yours I decided to try the H&N Terminator. They were far lighter at 7.25 grains and I really wasn't expecting these to be acceptable as far as accuracy. I cleaned and lubed my rifle last night. I went to the 25 yard indoor range this morning. I had to make numerous adjustments to my scope as it was zeroed with the Silver Arrows. I was pleasantly surprised with the accuracy of the Terminator pellets. Once zeroed I was able to shoot a five shot group, all touching, that measured about 3/4". Thanks for taking the time to make these videos.

I shot a Beeman springer for better than a decade running about 11-11.5 ft/lb. My go to pellet was the H&N Crow Magnum. I routinely got expansion even in that power level when recovering them occasionally if I happened to not have complete pass throughs on game. I shot the terminators some, but the crow magnums were definitely my favorite. My gun shot them better than my brothers and my buddies, but they both ran different model springers. Both of which also liked the pellet but not as much as my gun. Likely in a higher powered gun they'd basically disintegrate or flatten very quickly and have minimal penetration. I feel they would be best suited to stay under 20 or maybe 25ft lb MAX. But I'd love to see them in gel, 177 and 22 cal.

Excellent follow-on to the .22 test Andy. For me, Bisley Magnums do a great job in both my HW100 and Huntsman Regal. Very accurate and consistent, but they do tend to 'drill through' quarry. (Even at 12 ft/lb) This is quite useful for heart/lung shots on avian pests, when a head shot is not an option. I think the old guidance of '.22 for fur and .177 for feather' has some grounding! Comment #2. After spending a year with two more guns (TX200HC and an RM8. Both in .177), and also viewing this vid again and again, I’ve convinced myself that no pellet manufacturer caters to sub 12ft/lbs wrt the claim of deformation. It just isn’t there. Accuracy can never be checked with just changing pellets in a barrel that has not be leaded in to them. Any barrel needs at least 100 pellets down them to lead up and start being accurate with any pellet. I'd like to see you take one of the not very accurate pellets say the H+N hunter extreme in .22, put 100 down there and see if the grouping tightens up, something that has always happened to me. I just always picked a good pellet I could get hold of localy, not even zeroed scope and done said 100, zero it up and then test. You will be surprised. Sometimes the scope will even come on itself with not much adjustment as it approches 100 pellets, you can acctully see the pellets coming back on target.

Nine pounds with scope. I shoot it like a deer rifle. Test group shouldered with front rest, light grip, 9x scoped. Jsb shoots no better but costs 5x more. The gun out shoots me even as a marksman. Much fun, smooth quiet spring, love this gun. Added a Tasco 3-9x 40mm AO scope and sling, a whopping $190 total package. Comes with a scope good for 20 yds or less. RWS superdomes are 2.6 cents each. -- Have some H&M domed .22 pellets. I like them well enough, but I'd like more deformation at a little more speed. (It's a Gamo G2 Swarm Maxim) I built as a 15-20 yard gun. Squirrels, Skunks and Racoons. So I'm trying a Gamo 15 grain 'redfire' pellet next in it. Before anyone says that's not enough for Racoons. You're right. I don't care about being humane with them. They attack my dogs and my kids. But I do get the .22mag out for them when I can. Anyway the H&M I have are some 21.3 grains off the top of my head - probably wrong, but close, and the rifle is sighted for them. Slower, heavier, but accurate and they hit hard. Chronograph tells me 780fps. These Redfires are 15 grains, so I'm guessing somewhere around 1000fps when I get and chrono them. But that little polymer tip for a bit of barrier blindness, and maybe, just maybe some additional accuracy, coupled with the HP expansion ... well the theory is they might compliment the gun and intended range better. 20-30 yards, 90 percent Squirls that get into our houses, and wood peckers. I think they're both sound choices. Interested in what will work better. Just my thought process. Killed a squirl the other day from about 25 yards with the H&M. Through the spine, lung, out the chest (firing from an elevated position). Squill lived for 8 minutes. It went up a tree, died and fell. I couldn't follow on to put it out of it's misery because people and property were at risk. Wasn't happy watching it shutter for 8 minutes. Trying something new.

The HN Excite Hammers in .177 can be fuzzy to shoot and HN got quality shifts from batch to batch, but out to 30m my Weihrauchs turn them into usable groups, my SMK are okay with them, my Diana springs seems to hate them like your FAC. They are plinking pellets after all, maybe good for some FT/HFT training or am minor match with a rifle that likes them. My HW97 can keep them within a beer cap out to 50m, with a little sorting up front. So one could use them when on a budget. Also got couple sticks of them in .22 since they grouped well with anything from my 2240 as PR900 or HW100 - that why I bought the stock of my go to shop up after testing a can from their lot. I'm also a bit surprised by the performance of the JSB Straton, I have been testing them with springer as pcp and they group well with my sub FAC rifles, better then the pointed HN or RWS at least.
